Episode 29: Dr. Sara Zeff Geber is an author and the Founder of LifeEncore. Her book, Essential Retirement Planning for Solo Agers: A Retirement and Aging Roadmap for Single and Childless Adults, was selected as a “best book on aging well” by the Wall Street Journal. Sara also received the distinction of being named as one of the “2018 Influencers in Aging” by the PBS website, Next Avenue.

Episode 28: In this episode, we get an up-close and personal look at how RiverWoods Durham opened in 2019, how it created a sense of community for its residents, and what plans they have for the future. 

Kim discusses her goal of creating a fun and supportive environment for the residents, and how the pandemic has created a feeling of family within the community. They also touch on how the community was affected by the pandemic, where they got their positive outlook from, and what assumptions they had concerning COVID on older adults. We wrap up with the community's future plans, and give directions on how one can join a positive and uplifting community such as RiverWoods.

Episode 27: Arthur C. Brooks is the Professor of the Practice of Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and Professor of Management Practice at the Harvard Business School. Before joining the Harvard faculty in July of 2019, he served for ten years as president of the Washington, D.C.-based American Enterprise Institute (AEI), one of the world’s leading think tanks.

He is also a columnist for The Atlantic, host of the podcast “How to Build a Happy Life with Arthur Brooks,” and subject of the 2019 documentary film “The Pursuit”. Arthur has written 12 books, including the national bestsellers “Love Your Enemies” and “The Conservative Heart”. His most recent book is “From Strength to Strength”, will be available this February 2022.

Episode 26: Justine began working at RiverWoods as part of the pre-opening team in June 1994. Her tenure at RiverWoods began as the Director of Accounting, with growth into the role of CFO in 1997, COO in 2005 and President/CEO in 2007. She became CEO of the RiverWoods Group in 2012. 

Justine is a certified public accountant in the state of New Jersey and formerly served as Trustee and Treasurer of the Board of Directors for Leading Age of Maine and New Hampshire. Justine has lectured at the University of New Hampshire and is a frequent speaker at local, regional, and national industry conferences on topics including strategic management, growth planning, culture development, and financial oversight.

Episode 25: Jo Ann Allen has extensive on-air experience as a radio journalist, having started her career at Wisconsin Public Radio in Madison. She spent 24 years at various news organizations in New York City including 18 years at WNYC/New York Public Radio. 

After New York, Jo Ann moved to San Diego for 5 years and worked mainly at KPBS Radio. From San Diego, she  moved to Philadelphia and spent 4 years at WHYY Radio. In addition, Jo Ann taught radio journalism for 7 years as an adjunct professor at Long Island University in Brooklyn, where she was on the committee that decides the recipients of the George Polk Awards for Investigative Journalism. She is currently an anchor, reporter, and mentor at Colorado Public Radio in Denver.

Episode 24: Carol Marak is a solo aging advisor and advocate. She is the founder of the Elder Orphan Facebook Group, which launched in 2016 and has almost 10,000 members. She also has a successful YouTube channel called Solo and Smart and a book titled SOLO AND SMART: The Roadmap for a Supportive and Secure Future.

Carol attributes her seven years of family caregiving as to how she learned to plan for the future. Between her and her two sisters, caring for their ailing parents took up almost all of their time. With no children to rely on as her parents did, and knowing the amount of care that they needed, she knew she had to plan for her future and figure out what to do.

Episode 22: Richard Peck is a certified financial planner, a chartered advisor in philanthropy, and a chartered financial consultant. Prior to the Charitable Foundation, Richard served Dartmouth Hitchcock Health, the Geisel School of Medicine, and Dartmouth College in their philanthropic work. He is a volunteer member of the marketing and development committee of the Grafton County Senior Citizens Council in Lebanon, NH. He also serves on the NH Race and Equity All Workgroup and the Civic Engagement subgroup in Concord, NH. And, he is a member of the board of directors of the International Association of Advisors in Philanthropy and serves on its webinar and marketing committees as well.

For fun, in non-COVID times, Richard likes to perform improvisational comedy on stage with his troupe, which has been playing to groups large and small for over 25 years.
