Gah, it’s our last In Conversation episode for a little while!!! And what a show we have for you today.
Tarang Chawla is an Indian-born Australian lawyer, writer and anti-family violence advocate. In 2015, Tarang’s younger sister Nikita was murdered by her then-husband at the age of just 23. In the years since, Tarang has become one of the country’s leading campaigners for gender equality and advocates for women and children’s safety from family violence. In 2017, he was named a Young Australian of the Year finalist in Victoria and has written across topics including men's violence against women, discrimination, racism, masculinity and human rights.
After discussions with Tarang, Shameless Media has made the decision to donate $500 to Djirra to support Aboriginal women experiencing violence, as well as a further $500 to Dhadjowa Foundation, stopping black deaths in custody.
For more from Tarang, follow him on Instagram at @tarangchawla.

Gooooood morning all!
On today’s show: What do we make of the rumour that Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick… kind of hated each other? The Aussie influencer who’s the first person to be officially slapped on the wrist by an advertising standards board, Taylor Swift’s fresh album brings about fresh questions on her past, and - last but not least - the Byron Baes: Netflix has snapped up a reality show about Australia’s celebrity capital. So, will we be tuning in?
This week, Zara recommended watching Dancing with the Stars on Channel 7 and the book, The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth. Mich recommended Formula 1: Drive to Survive on Netflix.

A very happy Monday to you, Shameless frens!
Today on the show, we bring you the incredibly warm Mari Andrew. If you don’t recognise Mari’s name, which you likely do anyway, you’ll no doubt know and adore the illustrations she posts on her Instagram account @bymariandrew. In 2015 after her father passed away, Mari began posting a watercoloured illustration a day onto her Instagram page, as a way to express grief, yes, but to also spread light. Now, Mari boasts over one million Instagram followers and is a New York Times best-selling author too, who has published two books, Am I There Yet and My Inner Sky - the latter of which she wrote while recovering from an unexpected illness that left her paralysed for an entire month while living in Spain.
In this chat with Mari, we talk about why she’s so unafraid to harness loneliness, her relationship with grief, and how she manages to write deeply private stories for her public audience without unleashing past trauma.
For more from Mari, follow her on Instagram at @bymariandrew. And to grab a copy of her book, My Inner Sky, head here. If you enjoyed this interview, we recommend you listen to our In Conversation episode with Zoë Foster Blake here, who Mari has created a lot of book illustrations for.

Gooooood morning, wonderful listeners!
Today on the show, we bring you the brave Yumiko Kadota. Yumiko, as you’d read in her new memoir Emotional Female, has been an over-achiever her entire life, studying medicine at university and deciding to enter the perilous surgical stream when specialising as a doctor. Only, it was when Yumiko found herself trying to become a surgeon that she encountered the true, brutal nature of Australia’s hospital culture. Yumiko was subjected to such a ridiculous work schedule, colleagues who were unflinching in their coldness, and institutionalised sexism and racism that she was pushed to a mental breakdown in her late twenties, prompting her to take extended leave from her career and spend time as an inpatient in a psychiatric facility.
In this chat, we talk about the highs and the lows of being a female doctor in Australia, as well as what can be done to ensure the next generation of female surgeons aren’t pushed to a place they can’t come back from.
For more from Yumiko, follow her on Instagram at @mindbodymiko. And to grab a copy of her book, Emotional Female, head here.

Hey pals!
On today’s show: What the hell - literally - is going on with Lil Nas X right now, and why is he courting so much controversy this week? Then, why influencer’s mirror selfies are a big fat lie, Married At First Sight sparks important conversations about abusive relationships, and how one of Australia’s most iconic fashion brands, The Daily Edited, found itself in a bit of a PR debacle this week.
This week, Zara recommended watching Exposed: The Ghost Train on ABC iView. Mich recommended season 20 of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

Halloooooo, fellow book clubbers!
This month, we are looking at best-selling author Luanne Rice’s pacey thriller, The Shadow Box. This book jumps before and after the day artist Claire Chase was brutally attacked, to explain just what happened to her. Claire survives before going into hiding and has her suspicions on who her attacker likely was - her admired husband and state attorney, Griffin Chase, who is also running for governor. On the day of Claire’s attack, she was about to launch a shadow box at her art exhibition, inspired by an unforgivable act she was convinced her husband was responsible for years ago. On that same day, one of Claire’s neighbours was also killed. Throughout this novel, as both investigations unfold, we learn exactly how both incidents overlap, and the extent of Griffin Chase’s power over the circle that surrounds him.
Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle ask allllll ze questions: Did Rice’s thriller keep us on our toes? What did we love about the book? And finally, were we satisfied with the ending?

HELLOOO EVERYONE!
Today on the show, we bring you the serene Chantelle Otten. Chantelle is best known as one of the countries leading psycho-sexologists who works out of Melbourne with a team of more than 20. To put it simply, Chantelle is the authority on sex, not just for Australian women, but for Australians from all walks of life. She has built an incredibly successful career being one of the leading voices shattering taboos around sex: about what the average sex life should look like, about how common painful sex is, and about how sex can be pleasurable, no matter what body you live in.
In this chat, we covered everything: from why we are sold myths about sex from the moment we understand what it is, about how isolating sex can be if you feel like you’re doing it wrong, and why it’s important for her to be vocal about her own sex life with her Paralympian star boyfriend, Dylan Alcott.
For more from Chantelle, follow her on Instagram at @chantelle_otten_sexologist. If you enjoyed this chat, last year we sat down with Dylan Alcott and heard all about his life in professional sport - head here to listen.
