In this episode of SIYB, I sat with a pretty well-established stand-up comedian and film star from South Africa- Dr. Riaad Moosa. He is one of the funniest comedians in the country and is known for his specials on Youtube and Netflix but also his film- Material. Material was a great success in Dr. Moosa’s career and is still a very culturally significant piece of work in South African cinema.
Dr. Moosa is a muslim comedian and often finds himself balancing between political correctness and his belly-aching punchlines. He has mastered the art of joking about sensitive topics and making them comedy-friendly. He also keeps most of his comedy specials vulgarity-free so bring the kids along! Strictly Halaal, Life Begins, Not a nice guy; the list of his great pieces of work never ends.
I loved talking to him and learnt a lot about his work process. My goal is to explore the behind the scenes of people’s lives and it was great to hear how Dr. Moosa operates in the world of comedy and how he started as a comedian. With Covid-19 being a great hurdle for comedians, Dr. Moosa has quickly taken to social media by storm by hosting online live shows and events so the laughter never stops.
For someone with a medical degree, I think it is safe to say that Dr. Moosa took the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine” a little more seriously than most doctors.
Hope you enjoy!

This is our world. Please try and help causes, movements and communities in need whenever you can. Foregoing a future Saturday lunch to pay for a child’s monthly ration goes a long way. Sacrificing that new bag to provide food for a family for a week goes a long way.
