Jack the Giant-Killer, Tom Thumb, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, Henny Penny, Dick Whittington, The Three Little Pigs, Red Riding Hood and a host of immortal characters are found in this delightful collection of English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs. The book made its first appearance in 1890 and has remained a firm favorite with both young and old ever since.

Fairy tales have traditionally emanated from France and Germany. The famous compilations by La Fontaine and the Brothers Grimm have overshadowed children's literature for centuries. Yet, many of the stories we recount to children today have an English origin, something that we were unaware of.

The author, Joseph Jacobs, was an Australian folklorist and historian who painstakingly compiled them from various sources. In the preface to the first edition he recounts how he collected some stories from the descendants of English immigrants in America and Australia, while he sourced others from English gypsies and old ballads. In many cases he had to rewrite and retell those stories which existed in verse form or in ancient dialects. Older forms of English had to be tailored to suit modern readers, while some of the more objectionable parts had to be discarded. Wicked step-mothers, rampaging giants, damsels in distress, gallant princes and evil spells are some of the staples in this fascinating collection.

The author himself states that it was his intention to create a book in which the stories would sound as if they were being narrated by an old nurse or grandmother. Hence, the style is simple, direct and like he states, meant to be read aloud and not visually. The original edition also included extensive notes on the source from which he collected the stories and reference material which is of great interest to folk-lore enthusiasts. Such was the impact of some of the stories that they are referenced in Shakespeare's plays and provided inspiration for poets like Milton.

The highlight of the book for serious readers is the elaborate footnotes which provide a great deal of information about different variants of these stories that are told in other parts of the world. One of the most attractive features in the book are the charming illustrations that accompany each tale.

The book is a delightful read for both parents and children. Apart from old favorites, there are many new tales which most people would not have encountered like “Nix Nought Nothing” “The Laidly Worm of Spindleston Heugh” or “The Earl of Mar's Daughter.”

My Cousin Jane is a podcast produced by Jane Austen's cousin—well, her 8th cousin, 6 times removed—Lee Falin, about the life and works of Jane Austen. Rather than explore the "literary themes and ethos of Jane Austen", or something else you might hear about in a graduate level English Lit class, My Cousin Jane presents a light hearted, chapter-by-chapter collection of segments that one could think of as the "Deleted Scenes" or "Bonus Features" of Austen's works. With any luck, you'll come away both entertained, and with an enriched appreciation and understanding of the life and works of My Cousin Jane.

Hello. Have you had a good day today?
Yes? That’s awesome, keep that up!
No…? Oh my, i’m very sorry for you. I can’t do a lot, to help you but i can say that everything is going to end fine. And if it’s not fine, it hasn’t come to an end yet.

Well, without further ado, i’ll say a little about myself.
My name is Laura and i’m a very shy and introvert girl.
I sing here because i want to share my voice with the world without having to share my imperfections and identity. And it has been working out pretty well so far.

I hope you enjoy my content!
Have a good life!

What does one say after listening to two old friends discuss a haphazard mix of topics with their rotating panel of guests? We'd say, "that was disappointing," but you might think differently.

Each week, Art and Lex, friends from school and masters of nothing notable, sit down to talk with a guest or two about any and all topics — with jokes and ball-busting winning the day. We cannot promise you'll learn something worthwhile, but you will learn something new about us each week. And ain't learnin' about the human condition just the bee's knees?

Check us out and you won't be disappointed. Well... Maybe just a little...

U2-Y follows the design story of one of the biggest bands in rock and roll history. It aims to celebrate a unique relationship; The creative partnership between designer/art director Steve Averill and the band U2.This collaboration thrived and endured for over four and a half decades. Before the sleeves, before any poster or visual ephemera, came the name itself. Steve gave them this name.'U2'. A letter and a number. We will explore how the name itself became a monolith of design, whether it’s use is dominant or invisible. Just the 2ofUs. Steve is guided through the story of his career by his son, giving the series a unique and personal tone.‘In recent years, I became fascinated by the idea of this creative collaboration enduring for such a long time', Gareth Anton Averill says. The relationship that my father had with U2 was unique. I recognise this as being one of the longest-running creative relationships in music history, if not any creative or cultural industry.I believe this is worth exploring and celebrating and asking the question, 'Why?’.Alongside Steve's personal story, U2Y delves deep into design specifics. Topics discussed include the process of the pre-digital age, early computer-aided design, the advent of the Compact Disc and the explosion of promotional materials. In essence, U2-Y tells the story of one of the biggest bands in the world from a different perspective; the record sleeve. From Punk to Pop. The story begins in 1977 with the Cultural explosion that was punk. Ireland's first punk group, 'The Radiators From Space', founded and fronted by Steve (Rapid), was the catalyst for his connection with U2.The U2-Y Podcast will examine an album per episode. It begins with the invention of the name, 'U2' itself. It then journeys through each major campaign, up to and including the hyper-vivid years of the Pop album and Pop-mart tour.
