Ostap Ukrainats was born in 1994 in Kalush, Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine. He graduated from the National Kyiv-Mohyla University with BA and MA degrees in comparative literature. He made his debut as a writer in 2017 with the novel "Malchut", which was hailed the "debut of the year" by Village magazine. Since then, his novels „Trance” and „Crusade Chancellery” were well received by readers. Ostap writes in the genre of historical and peculiar fiction, often referring to cultural heritage and history of anecdotes. He lives in Lviv. Of his four novels, three are dedicated to historical events and explore Ukrainian identity through the prism of postcolonial and trauma studies. Russian forces continue to attack Ukrainian lines daily, across a vast frontline. Through March, Russian forces have come close to pushing Ukrainian troops out of the Kursk Oblast, that Kyiv had occupied for around eight months. As Ukraine moves to active defence in the area, the priority is to prevent a breakthrough of Russian forces into Ukraine's Sumy Oblast, just over the border with Kursk. Russian advances inside Ukraine are now reduced to a crawl – with little progression being seen in key targets territories for Russia. It seems that the war has reached a new level of attritional stagnation. Monitoring group DeepState reported that Russian gains for March 2025 were at their lowest ebb since last June.While peace talks dominate the headlines, the confrontation of two armies in a brutal fight for survival or domination, continues unabated. If we were to create an ideal ‘wish list’ for Vladimir Putin – what would he want to achieve most from his substantial investments in assets, agents and useful idiots, as well as through reflexive control. It would be the dismantling of NATO and the EU, as well as other international institutions that put limitations on Russia’s European and global operations. And more than this, he’d want to drive a wedge between Europe and the US and undermine the commitment of the Americans to defending the principles of Article 5 – NATO’s deterrence policy where members states assist each other in the event of attack.And it seems that the Pentagon under Trump has delivered the ultimate prize to Putin. An internal guidance memo from Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth focuses on deterring China’s seizure of Taiwan and shoring up homeland defence. This represents a major reorientation of the US military. The document suggests that ‘risks in other theatres’, may not be a priority given constraints on personnel and resources. There is emphasis on pressure allies in Europe, the Middle East and East Asia to spend more on defence to take on the bulk of deterrence against threats. Edition No119 | 29-03-2025 - A limo from 'Putin’s car fleet' has blown up in a huge blast in central Moscow – which will undoubtedly fuel the already intense paranoia of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. This comes just a day after pictures emerged of his honour guard being searched for bombs.Signs are intensifying of Putin’s paranoia about losing his life to assassination, as sewers in Moscow are set to be routinely searched and his own guards are patted down. One story doing the rounds apparently from an ex-bodyguard suggest the despot uses his personal protection to operate his washing machine due to assassination fears.The Aurus limousine from Putin's "official car fleet" was destroyed in a huge blast on a street just north of Moscow's FSB secret service headquarters in Lubyanka. Footage showed the fire started in the engine of the £275,000 Aurus Senat subsequently spread to the interior of the vehicle. Workers from nearby restaurants and bars poured onto Sretenka Street before fire services arrived. In photos black smoke can be seen billowing out of the destroyed vehicle as the fire rages. Footage taken from another angle suggested the car’s rear was also damaged.It’s not known who was using the car at the time, or even if there was anyone inside. The vehicle is believed to be owned by Putin’s Presidential Property Management Department.
