To be successful in life requires that you have successful relationships both personally and professionally.

Your overall success is directly linked to how well you are able to navigate the maze of the various relationships you’ll encounter.

Business card, business card, business card. This was one of the “must have” item wherever you go. We were told you are not business savvy if you went places without your business card.

It made sense at the time and does from time to time in today’s world.

In some countries, it might still be a necessity and for a number of reasons. One of which could be “to look official.”

I remember a few years back that I made sure I had a business card to hand out to people that I came in contact with. It made me look professional. Only professionals carry business cards … So I thought.

I would hand them out as often as I could even without having any kind of relationship with those I handed my card. It was cool.

Today, we are hearing about the death of business cards. I hear from certain circles that no one who is with-the-times carry business cards. I don’t subscribe to this philosophy. I believe there are times when it serves you to have one.

However, based upon my own experiences with people handing me business cards without forming a  relationship with me and what I do with those cards, I thought there have to be a better way.

Why do you need a business card?

You need a business card for those times when you are at a meeting and someone shows interest in you and what you have to say and want to have a way to keep in touch with you.

They might ask for your phone number, which would be on the card, but you would have more information on the card as well, that you want them to have … Your email address, social media information, website URL and maybe, your purpose statement or tagline.

How to make sure your business card gets taken home:

1. Do not hand out your card without someone asking you for it.

2. Do not randomly leave your business card in other business places

3. Do not send out your cards by mass mailing.

It would seem that all relationships require a certain kind of care to make them successful. This could feel very overwhelming and at times downright stressful.

Could this be the reason most people can’t be bothered and just settle for what they have and do the best they can to make it work?

Do you like being told what to do, when to do it, how to do it and where to do it? (you can make “it” whatever you choose).

There was a season in my life when I was much younger, when being told what to do was just an acceptable part of life. It was something that was indoctrinated in me. 

I grew up in a culture – Jamaican – where as a child you were to be seen and not to be heard. You just do as you are told.

This was true in almost all aspect of society – in the home, at school, at play and at work. Challenging the status quo wasn’t an attractable option because of the consequences that would follow.

In this episode today, our guest – Matt Miller – was one that found out he disliked being told what to do. He did submit at various points in his life especially during his military years in the United States Air Force.

I would imagine if there was one place that being told what to do is part of the cultural norm, it would be the military.

However, after leaving the military he was convinced being told what to do, was not his thing.

He had to find an alternative, which is to be the one in charge of his life and those who depended on him. This became clearer to him when an event that he had no control over, put him $80,000 in the hole.

He went on to form his own company and through patience, risk, trial and error and determination, made it into a million dollar company.

Feeling stuck is one of most common phrases that I have encountered in the online space. I’m sure there are many others but I know from personal experience as I’ll share in this episode as well as clients who I’ve coached with, this term tend to be a reoccurring one.

The question is, “what do you do when you are feeling stuck?”

I”m not sure there is any one right answer to this question. However, I do know what works for me when I actually decide to do something about it.
