Who would have thought that the combination of brain and body fitness would be important to overall health especially at midlife? We hear a lot about physical fitness from most of the media, but not much on brain fitness.
Brain fitness? How does one get his or her brain fit? Is there a workout for it?
These maybe some of the questions that you are whispering to yourself as I would too.
Growing up I was taught that the brain is constantly losing brain-cells at a rapid rate and once they are lost, there was not way to regain them.
This is true as far as the loss of brain-cells are concerned.
However the hopelessness of the message no longer have to dominate the conversation. There is something you can do about it as the newer science research have shown.
You might have heard the old adage: use it or lose it. The use of this adage was mostly around muscle tissue. This continues to be so.
However, it is also true of the brain-cells.
You can rewire the brain circuitry through the use of learning new information.
This learning can take place through reading and other cognitive activities.
In this episode our guest – Michael Gonzalez-Wallace – shares with us how important it is for us to take time to re-evaluate our self-care.
He shared how his research and years of working with individuals in various capacity has concluded that with a new approach to fitness, we can extend our lives in quantity and quality.
Here are some of the key points he shared in this episode:
1. Life is more complex than a linear journey of A to B. It’s more of a Zig Zag
2. Reflect and assess your life; look at your overall health and act accordingly
3. Carve out time for yourself and keep that appointment with self
4. Between 40 and 65 are peak performance years that need to be taken advantage of
5. The brain has the capacity to rewire itself therefore if it’s not used regularly, it will shrink as your muscles do
6. Make your health priority number one
7. Live in the moment but always try to grow.
8. Embracing the path that life takes you is very important
