  • 5 Proven Ways To Get Speaking Engagements | Kingsley Grant | Episode TML151
Getting speaking engagements is not a walk-in-the-park. It is not easy. If it was, many more people would be doing it.
Most of the aspiring speakers that I work with as a Coach and others that I have general conversation with, have this one question in common: How do I get speaking engagements.
I myself am learning and have figured out some ways to do that. However, I also have this question for those who are speaking more on a regular basis than I am.
As a matter of fact, I’ve hired a coach to help me with this … someone who is doing a whole lot more speaking than I am and coaches people to do the same.
My point is that it is a challenge no matter what stage you find yourself. Speaking for free is easier. Speaking for a small fee is a bit harder, but still not that difficult.
The more your fee goes up, the more challenging finding speaking engagements becomes.
In this episode, I’ve identified 5 Proven Ways to get more speaking engagements. These 5 ways are not the only ones, but will be found among the top of any substantive list.
The 5 Proven Ways To Get Speaking Engagements:
    1. Make sure you have a topic to speak on – this is critical
    2. Spread the word – friends, families, social media, etc.
    3. Practice for free – local Toastmasters, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce
    4. Become an authority – write a book, articles, etc.
    5. Learn from others – NSA, Hiring A Coach, Networking

  • 5 Super Tips To Become A Good Public Speaker | Kingsley Grant | Episode TML150
The question that I tend to hear from a number of people is this: How do I become a good public speaker? These individuals don’t want to just become an average speaker, they want to become a good public speaker.
The answers to this question can be varied. It all depends on who you ask.
What I find is that many people think because they are a good talker, this automatically make them a good speaker. This is so far from the truth.
Public Speaking requires practice and learning some basic foundational skill-sets. This is an art. The most successful public speakers will tell you this. One of the most successful non-profit organization that confirms this idea, is Toastmasters International. It’s all about helping you become a better speaker and leader.
This list is not exhaustive but it will provide you with what you need to get started.
In this episode I share the following tips.
The 5 Super Tips To Become A Good Public Speaker are as follows:
    1. Join a local Toastmasters Group
    2. Watch TED talks on Youtube
    3. Speak wherever and whenever possible
    4. Record yourself speaking (this could be audio or video)
    5. Wear the Speaker label

  • When Failure Is Not An Option | Michael Stelzner | Episode TML149
You may have heard this phrase before: Failure Is Not An Option. Do you recall in what context you’ve heard it or when you first came across it? Do you remember what you’re reaction was when you heard it?
I must say I’ve heard or read it in many contexts. I remember when I first came across the phrase, it stood out to me as one option that wasn’t going to be a  part of the discussion. Anything but failure.
It seems like it was seared in my psyche because during the last few years I’ve had reasons to give up and chalk up an experience as just that … failure. But when I think: Failure is not an option, it changes the conversation. I have to find a way around, over, under or through my situation and for the most part, I have.
With that in mind, you can just imagine what it was like for me when our guest used the phrase. It became obvious that he has embraced this philosophy and made it a part of his repertoire.
In this episode our guest – Michael Stelzner – shares with us his journey to the success he enjoys today. It has not been easy as you’ll hear. His motivation came from a place that you’ll not be surprised.
Some of the conversation centered around fear, failure and faith. Michael shared for the first time one of his childhood dreams that became a reality.
Here are some other things he shared in this episode:

    Embrace fear
Fear is the green light to move ahead or into action

There are a number of lessons learned from a $300,000 mistake.
    And a whole lot more

  • How To Leverage Speaking As A Business | Mikki Williams | Episode TML148
Seeing speaking as a business is a bit of a stretch for some people. One of the reasons for this is that it is not quantifiable; it’s not a tangible “product.”
For this reason, many have not taken the time to develop the skills necessary to become a better speaker.
On the other hand, many are under the impression that if you can talk, you can speak.
If this was true, speaking before a group of people would not be seen as one of the most terrifying thing anyone can do. As a matter of fact you may have heard that some people would “rather die than speak.”
Therefore to think of speaking as a business is a far cry for many.
In this episode our guest – Mikki Williams – gives us some insights as to how she made speaking a business. She “accidentally” fell into the speaking business, when she was invited to give a keynote before 500 of the Fortune 500 business leaders.
Even though she was terrified when she found out who would be in her audience, her desperation to make life for herself and her son before his tragic death, overcame any fear she might have had.
Here are some other things she shared in this episode:

The tragic death of her only son at 29 years of age

By using her natural talents she found out she was good at business

People fear risk and change which are the two things she embraces

Having gone through the worst thing that could happen to her – the death of her son – everything else is moot to her
The importance of having a change mindset instead of a fixed one
We all have a lot of head-trash, which keeps us back
Mistakes are a springboard for growth
Because we all talk, we think we can speak is a myth
Training without having speaking skills is like making wine without grape
    Bloom where you are planted
    Get up and do
Do what you have to do to support yourself while you pursue what it is you want to do
You never know who is in your audience
Pay careful attention to other speakers

When you think of the phrase Side Hustle, what comes to your mind?
If you are like me, it is something that you do on the side to supplement your daily routine especially as it pertains to work. For most people, it is an income generating kind of work that is being done on the side.
