  • Refresh My Memory – Casablanca

    CASABLANCA

    Welcome to Refresh My Memory where we’re talking about 1943’s Casablanca. Oh…you’re downloading the podcast because if you don’t, you’ll regret it – maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but next Tuesday at the latest.

    Jason Dedrick, Eric Fell and Vicky Van are back, yakking about their memories of one of the greatest movies of all time. Or is it?

    (Spoilers: It is.)

    There will also be drinks – one of which is the Gin Rickey. Want to make it? Here’s the recipe:

    * 2 oz. of gin

    * 1/2 oz. each of fresh squeezed lime juice and club soda

    * Put them all in a highball glass with ice, give it a stir and if you have room for two lime slices, all the better

    * Need it sweeter? Add some simple syrup if your papers are in order.

    If you make the drink or come up with one of your own, please send a picture by clicking here! Even if you don’t, we’d still love to hear from you.

  • Refresh My Memory – Raiders of the Lost Ark

    RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

    Welcome to Refresh My Memory where we mix movies and refreshments with three hosts that are such treasures they belong in a museum, Jason Dedrick, Eric Fell and Vicky Van.

    They’ll be talking about the classic 1981 Lucas/Spielberg tale of Nazis vs. a box. Refreshments appearing in the film will be served and discussed.

    If you’d like to make the “I Think Marion’s Got A Drinking Problem” cocktail, here’s the recipe…

    * Take an Old Fashioned which is 1 1/2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey, 1 sugar cube, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and water.

    * Pour the bitters and water on the sugar cube and muddle/crush it at the bottom of an old fashioned glass.

    * Fill with a large round ice cube that looks like a rolling boulder.

    * Add the whiskey/bourbon and top with a green gummy worm and pretend it’s a snake.

    Departnemt of Corrections
    The Disney film Dave was vaguely remembering is called America the Beautiful. It was filmed to be projected in the round using a system developed by longtime Disney employee Ub Iwerks (who also developed the multiplane camera systems for Disney). Dave could not have seen it when he visited the park in 2003 with his daughters as the display was closed at that point. He could have gone to see it his first three visits though (and probably did).

    Here is that film that so fascinated a nostalgic at heart, young Dave Dedrick (unfortunately not in the original Circarama):

    Also, here is the Sesame Street animated short mentioned by Ian during the show:

  • Horse Mysteries Season 3 Episode 7

    Horse Movies!

    Hello, horse fans and mystery fans and horse mystery fans!

    This week we hope that you’re also movie fans as Lezah and Dave discuss their favourite (and maybe not so favourite) horse movies.

    As people who are and have been closely involved in the world of horses and the horse industry, Lezah and Dave bring a different viewpoint to these films – seeking an accuracy that is beyond the scope of the average movie fan.

    What makes a good horse movie? What horse movies would the hosts recommend? And what horse movies should they watch?

    Some of the horse movies discussed were:

    * The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit – a sentimental favourite for Lezah with excellent show jumping footage from a different era

    * Secretariat – a pretty good biopic that suffers, in Lezah’s opinion, from the miscasting of the central character

    * Sea Biscuit – an excellent biopic that offers authentic period details of the horse world of a bygone age

    * National Velvet – a horse fantasy that fails to appeal to the initiated

    * Lean On Pete – a deep, loving study of the multi-level connections between humans and animals

    * The Rider – an elegiac love letter to the character of the horseman

    * Buck – an amazing documentary of a deeply intuitive teacher and trainer

    * Jockey – a sad movie detailing the final days in the career of an aging jockey

    * Harry and Snowman – the plucky story of luck and talent meeting in the jumping ring

    * Unbranded – a criminal story of the tragic murder of wild horses as the Wild West is tamed by its last inhabitants

    We told you what we thought, and now it’s your turn. What’s your favourite horse movie? Knowing their tastes, what horse movie would you recommend to Lezah and Dave?

    We hope you enjoyed this week’s episode. Please comment about the show, and please like and subscribe on all your favourite podcast aggregators!

  • Refresh My Memory – Jaws

    Welcome to Refresh My Memory – where we mix movies and refreshments!

    Will it work? Only time will tell. And maybe the Comments Section.

    Your biting hosts are Jason Dedrick, Eric Fell and Vicki Van. They’ll be discussing the 1975 Stephen Spielberg classic tale of shark vs. character actors. Refreshments appearing in the film will be served and discussed.

    If you’d like to make the “You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Glass” drink discussed in the episode, here’s the recipe:

    * Take a Blue Hawaii (not a Blue Hawaiian) which is:

    * 3/4 ounce vodka

    * 3/4 ounce light rum

    * 1/2 ounce blue curaçao

    * 3 ounces pineapple juice

    * 1 ounce sweet and sour mix (or simple syrup)

    * Blend together with ice

    * Chop up an Amerena cherry in syrup and sprinkle on the drink (to simulate a shark attack)

    * Let some of the syrup pour down the sides of the glass – enough to get the beach shut down

    * Maraschino cherries are also fine

    * Top with a gummy candy shark

    * A salted rim is both optional and we forgot to do it in our version

    If you make the drink or come up with one of your own, please send a picture by clicking here! Even of you don’t, we’d still love to hear from you.
