  • The Fansplainers – Ready or Not

Hello, fellow film fans! Welcome to another episode of our spoiler-enriched podcast The Fansplainers!

This week Ian and Dave are more then prepared to review the black comedy/horror film Ready or Not. What did they make of this bloody, satirical, subversive film and its grisly themes of family togetherness and killing housemaids?

Well, let them fansplain it for you.

    Thanks for listening.

Dept. of Corections:Despite Dave’s claims, this film is not Canadian, but it was filmed in Canada with all of the secondary characters and one of the leads played by Canadian actors so it’s easy to see why there was a mix-up.

This week: Interrupting cat; unfinished comics; poor dinosaurs; direct to sequel; horrifying shorts; too famous; “imteresting” leading men; perfect timing; meaningful nicknames; bank robber; Dirty Harry Minute; nauseating video calls; phone-a-phobia; phone scams; win-a-car scam; old enough for circuses; ye olde clowne; regional kiddie shows; unspoken agreements; Rankin-Bass Tolkein; impossibly high self-esteem; Ian meets jocks; getting in people’s way; too aware; people are angry; feeling ignored; self-reality; fine; craving anonymity; clubland; self-conscious dancing; and, finally, the genie is out of the bottle.

    Thanks for listening.

Question of the Week: What was your childhood morning TV routine? Or maybe non-TV routine?Sub-question: Did you ever have a sort of unspoken agreement with your parents? A sort of quid quo pro like David’s set the breakfast table/get to eat breakfast in front of the TV.

  • Sneaky Dragon Episode 405

Hola, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 405 of Sneaky Dragon. This week Ian and David are joined by auditor David Russell, who dropped by to see how a podcast is made.

And he chose our podcast. Strange.

Anyway, this week on the show: our mystery novels; cooking on video; arnolding; stirring creatures; chicken recipes; bread and butter; corn dog problems; we love the PNE; “kombacha” right atcha; tradition is important; super dogs; disappointing prize home; junk food metabolism; epic hot dog tale; big B.C.; personal time; ghost dad; a good run spoiled; hang ups; midway physics; horse danger; itchy; Hagar-iana; sombre chick talk; squirrel jerks; hidden cameras; Question of the Week – Sneakers respond; the “Oirish” accent continues; Twitter catch-up; podcast superstars; hon; blowing; and, finally, social signals.

    Thanks for listening.

Question of the Week: Can you remember a time you were ignored? Sub-question: Is there a place you are or were a regular?

Remembrances:While editing the show it occurred to us that Robertson Davies’ trilogy of novels that take place in a small-ish Ontario town not unlike Stratford, Ontario is called The Salterton Trilogy. (We may be exaggerating the relation to Stratford though – it’s been a couple of decades since reading those books. Highly recommended though if you ever happen to find them – Tempest-Tost, Leaven of Malice, and A Mixture of Frailties.)

  • Sneaky Dragon Episode 404

Hola, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 404 of the Sneaky Dragon Podcast! The only podcast on the Internet!

    For instance:

Man, we forgot Thomas Haden Church. He’s always good.

  • Sneaky Dragon Listening Party Ep. 22

Hello, hello, dear fellow music maniacs, and welcome to the second half of our exploration of the wonders and quirks of that hazy and broadly defined genre: Post-Punk. A genre that Dave has further broadly defined and made very hazy indeed.

So please pogo and/or skank as necessary to the herky-jerk rhythms, deadpan vocals, amateurish playing, DIY ethos and all-round super coolness of our post-punk celebration!

On this week’s show, we listened to:

    * The Monochrome Set – “Eine Symphonie des Grauens” – Volume, Contrast, Brilliance: Sessions and Singles, Vol. 1, 1983* The Au Pairs – “Dear John” – Playing with a Different Sex, 1981* Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – “Every Night I Die at Miyagi’s” – House Arrest, 2002* Essential Logic – “Aerosol Burns” – Wanna Buy a Bridge?, 1980* The Shins – “Mine’s Not a High Horse” – Chutes Too Narrow, 2003* GOAT – “It’s Time for Fun” – single “Time for Fun” b/w “Relax”, 2015* Wye Oak – “Holy Holy” – Civilia, 2011* Dungen – “Åkt Dit” – Allas Sak, 2015* Young Marble Giants – “Final Day” Colossal Youth, 1980* Delta 5 – “Triangle” – See the Whirl, 1981* Scritti Politti – “Skank Bloc Bologna” – Wanna Buy a Bridge?, 1980

And we were super excited to see Dave’s Top 5 return this week. For this Top 5, Dave pursued his theory that the saxophone – after some years in the wilderness – is being reinstated to its rightful place in rock music…but in new and unusual ways. So here, in no particular order, is Dave’s Top 5 Modern Rock Songs Featuring The Sax:

    * Modern Nature – “Footsteps” – How to Live, 2019* Julia Holter – “Sea Calls Me Home” – Have You in My Wilderness, 2015* This Is the Kit – “Hotter Colder” – Moonshine Freeze, 2017* Deer Tick – “Limp Right Back” – Deer Tick, Vol.1, 2017* Shannon Lay – “Death Up Close” – August, 2019

    Thanks for listening.
