  • Sneaky Dragon Episode 362

    Hola, Sneakers, and welcome to the official sixth anniversary of Sneaky Dragon. Yes, it was six years ago that Ian and Dave gathered around a single, not-very-good microphone (because the dynamic mics that Dave brought didn’t work very well with our new midi interface) and recorded our first episode. It was a rough and bumpy ride, but we’ve smoothed out the experience over the years and we now like to call our shows “mostly painless”.
    Speaking of mostly painless, this week on the show Ian and Dave tell us about our new spin-off podcast – Sneaky Dragon Listening Party – co-hosted by Dave and his daughter Mary – it’s a music podcast that goes back through the mixtapes Dave made for listeners starting three years ago; they celebrate an awkward anniversary; deal some Happy Days trivia; give out true facts about Bob Einstein; lose their sense of humour; remember Real People; do some bad vamping; remember That’s Incredible; reveal the secret history of 1968; besmirch acid gurus; sympathies for the swastika; Sabrina feelings; draw lots; uses for the I Ching; shame Dave; pitch Edgar Allen Poe, paranormal cowboy investigator; defend Mark Twain; never say never say never again; and, finally, Laurel Robertson’s Top 10 movies:

    * The Darjeeling Limited
    * The Spanish Prisoner
    * The Sixth Sense
    * O, Brother, Where Art Thou?
    * The Prestige
    * Alien
    * Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    * The Drop
    * Gone Fishing
    * A Hard Day’s Night

    Thanks for listening.
    This didn’t come up during the show, but here is a great, inept interview with a game Bob Einstein done for a local radio station:

  • Sneaky Dragon Listening Party Ep. 1

    Hola, Sneakers and music lovers everywhere! Welcome to the first episode of our Listening Party! This podcast is an attempt to document the 400+ songs that made up the Sneaky Dragon Mixtape Project undertaken by Dave starting in 2015. Did you send in a blank CD-R to get a mixtape? Have you ever wondered why you were sent the songs you got on your mixtape? Did you ever wonder what songs other people got on their mixtapes? Well, we hope we can answer these questions and many more on our first spin-off from the Sneaky Dragon podcast!
    So, join Dave and his daughter Mary as they sit on the floor by the old record player, chatting and listening to some great songs from Dave’s extensive music collection.
    This week, we take a look at “Side One” of Liam Penton’s mixtape. The final selection was burned to disc on the 11th of November, 2015. Unfortunately, during our talk, we missed some songs that had mysteriously disappeared from the iTunes playlist we used for reference during the taping, but fortunately, they were recorded in our notes and on the playlist CD cover so we’ll discuss those songs in Episode 2. (The missing songs are marked with an asterisk.)
    Here are the songs from Side One of Liam’s mixtape:

    * A.C. Newman – “On the Table” (from The Slow Wonder, 2004)
    * The Five Americans – “Western Union” (from Western Union, 1967)*
    * Roxy – “Love, Love, Love” (from Roxy, 1969)
    * Denny Laine – “Say You Don’t Mind” (from Acid Drops, Spacedust & Flying Saucers, 2001)*
    * Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – “Ramp of Death” (from Pig Lib, 2003)
    * Otis Clay – “That’s How It Is When You’re In Love” (from Testify!, 1967)
    * Judy Kelly – “Window” (from Wayfaring Strangers: Ladies from the Canyon, 2006)
    * The Ballroom – “Spinning, Spinning, Spinning” (from Magic Time, 1967)
    * The Move – “Beautiful Daughter” (from Shazam, 1969)
    * The Meat Puppets – “Up on the Sun” (from Up on the Sun, 1985)
    * Local Rabbits – “West Island Rockers” (from You Can’t Touch This, 1996)

    We really enjoyed Virginia O’Brien’s appearance in the film. Here is a couple of  fun appearances by her:
