Tom Burckhardt is an artist based out of New York City. He received his BFA from SUNY Purchase and also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. His numerous solo exhibits include “City Slang” at Gregory Lind in San Francisco, “Full Stop” at the Knoxville Art Museum and the Hudson River Museum, “Pretty Little Liars” at Tibor De Nagy Gallery amongst many others. He’s been included in group shows at Steven Harvey, Brian Morris, Steven Zevitas, DC Moore, Caren Golden and also in museum shows at the Nation Academy, the McNay Art Museum, and the Islip Art Museum to name a few. His work has been covered in numbers publications and sites including The New York Times, Art in America, ArtNews, The Brooklyn Rail, ArtForum and The Village Voice. He’s received a Joan Mitchell Foundaion Grant, a Guggenheim Grant, a Pollock Krasner Grant, a NYFA Grant among others. Brian met Tom at his studio of over 20 years in the East Village in Manhattan and they talked about his youth as the child of accomplished artists, Indonesian percussion, passing on grad school and his life as a working artist.

Frances Barth was born in the Bronx, in New York City, and studied painting at Hunter College. While an art student she also studied modern dance, and performed in some of Yvonne Rainer’s work at Lincoln Center and the Billy Rose Theater in 1968-9. In 1972 Marcia Tucker put her painting “Henning” in the Whitney Museum Painting Annual, which resulted in her representation by Susan Caldwell For the past ten years Frances has also been working with animation and video. Her video, "Regina," a short portrait/documentary of the painter Regina Bogat, had its world premier at The Marfa Film Festival 2014. Her list of exhibitions and awards are just too long to list but highlights include The Joan Mitchell Award, an NEA Grant, the Guggenheim Fellowhip, and she is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Albright-Knox, and the Whitney Museum just to name a few from a very long list. She was a professor at the Yale School of Art for a significant time and was the Director Emeritus of the Mt.Royal School of Art, Maryland Institute. Brian visited Frances’ home studio in North Bergen, New Jersey and spoke about her youth in the Bronx, her formative years in New York City and her explorations into dance and animation.

He was born in 1989 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated from Penn State University in 2011 with a BFA in Drawing & Painting before obtaining his MFA at Yale University School of Art in 2014. He was awarded the Al Held Fellowship at the Yale School of Art in 2013 and has had a residency at the 2015 Fire Island Artist Residency. He recently recieved the 2016 Pulse Prize. He’s shown at Samuel Freeman, Lesley Heller, BravinLee, Kravets Wehby and Lehman College Art Gallery to name a few. He has several upcoming solo shows including an exhibit at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. He is also currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University. Brian met up with Devan at his solo booth with Stems Gallery at the Independant Art Fair and we talked about his formative experiences in Philly, music and cinema and the ideas and meaning in his work.

Carl Ostendarp is an abstract painter based in upstate New York. He has had over 33 solo national and international museum and gallery exhibitions and more than 170 group exhibitions. Recent exhibitions include his just completed show at Elizabeth Dee Gallery in Harlem; Everything Falls Faster than an Anvil at Pace Gallery, London; and Pop Abstractions at Garth Greenan Gallery and Fredericks & Freiser, New York City. Carl has a long history of not only showing his work but curating excellent exhibitions. He  taught at NYU, Tyler, Rutgers, SVA, and The Cooper Union prior to his 14 years at the helm of the Graduate Studies Program at Cornell University. Ostendarp received his B.F.A. from Boston University and his M.F.A. from Yale University. Brian met up with Carl at Elizabeth Dee Gallery on the last day of his show to talk about his past days in NYC, his curated shows, the role of humor in painting and a bit of soul jazz.
