Today - How local health departments are shouldering the task of sharing public information online during the pandemic. There was no social media during the last major pandemic in the United States. During the 1918 flu, the public received information from advertisements, newspapers and flyers.  Today, almost two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, social media is flooded with information from personal accounts, health departments and anyone between. And while social media has made public health information more easily accessible, health officials have voiced concerns about how social media also makes it much easier to spread false information. Public health officials in Knox, Richland and Ashland Counties agree. Though it’s a mixed bag, they ultimately think social media is an important tool for public health communication in the digital age.

A Mansfield man was recently saved from nearly drowning by a fellow fishermen at Pleasant Hill Lake. Fred Sowders’ wife told him to wear a coat when he went out fishing the day after Christmas. Hours later, that neon green jacket helped save his life. It was midmorning when Sowders was on the water and decided to move to a different part of the lake. He attempted to pull start his motor, placing his left hand on top of the motor and pulling the cord with his right.

The Richland County Solid Waste Management Authority board approved the hiring of an environmental officer last week, in the hopes that it would help cut down on illegal dumping throughout the county. The roots of Mansfield's current trash-hauling issues date back more than two decades when the public hauling option was eliminated. In April 1998, Mansfield City Council voted to abolish municipal trash service, dissolving what remained of its sanitation department, which was still serving 2,800 customers.

We remember Walden "Butch" Jefferson, a long-time former member of Mansfield City Council, who died on Monday. He was 72. Walden Jefferson was a Mansfield man through and through. He was born in Mansfield to W.B. Jefferson Sr. and Pearl Jefferson, in March of 1949. Jefferson attended Mansfield Senior High School. After graduating, Jefferson served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm, earning a Bronze star.

Schools within Richland County and across the nation have struggled with a substitute personnel shortage, which has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. More teachers are required to stay home, either because they’ve tested positive for COVID-19 or have been identified as a close contact. The need for substitutes is greater now than ever. And there’s simply not enough of them.

A Councilman from Mifflin Village was arrested and jailed for menacing by stalking. He says the arrest is part of a plot to remove him from office. On December 30, Fred Craig was sworn in as a councilman for the village of Mifflin–and less than a week later, he was served a complaint, charged with menacing by stalking, and arrested on the same day.
