  • Soul School - Lesson 46: The Story of How "Heathens" Received my Son - Spark My Muse
When "being a mascot" is the best your child can hope for in terms of peer acceptance and belonging (at your church no less), the context for you and your family shifts. How you help your child cope and where your find your salvation can take a surprising turn.

That is my personal story and the springboard for a deeper reflection today: about how we find our way in the world, make life better for ourselves, our family, and others, and maybe find some healing in the process.

The topics of "fear of other", suffering, shame, hospitality, disability, community, church, and the like, are covered well in my conversations with Tom Reynolds. Be sure to check those links in the show notes–they are invaluable.

(Also, photos and one of my sons videos will be embedded in the show notes and his youtube channel link where he loves to upload new creations will be listed in the show notes if you want to befriend him and encourage him in ways the Christian peers at church never wanted to. *You can also search youtube for: "Nathan DeLay trains". he adores getting new subscribers.)

Thank for being great listeners, friends and fans. So many retweets and Facebook shares, so many write reviews, and some even chip in with money and it warms my heart and quite LITERALLY- keeps the program solvent. If you haven't spread the word, given to the show or written an iTunes review, please be a part of the unique and loving base of this weird and wild Spark My Muse thing we're all doing. YOU - make it worth it.

  • Eps 75: Magic, Deception, Hypnosis–Guest, Kevin Ferguson
Studying how magicians trick audiences reveals a lot about how our brains work or don't work. How do we become fooled? How does hypnosis REALLY work and can people do something against their moral code? Why are some people convinced that magicians (or charlatan faith healers, cult leaders, and the like that use the same techniques) actually have supernatural powers? My guest today is magician and a science writer, Kevin Ferguson and our conversation will cover how our brains can be deceived.

A B-I-G thanks to the extra special listeners contributing to the show! You rock my world. Much love to you. Spark My Muse is now heard in 158 countries and YOU make that possible. (If you haven't chipped in yet. I need YOUR help! Shine your Spark and use the donate button available at SparkMyMuse.com in the show notes - or you can support month, at any amount, at patreon.com/sparkmymuse)

The show notes today have fantastic embedded video and extras.

  • Eps 74: Anxiety At the Base of Belief - Guest, Tad DeLay
EXPECT DeLays! Tad DeLay and I are not related, but we've been having fun with name humor leading up to today's episode. Our conversation is full of very compelling topics that include anxiety, belief, the unconscious, ritual and more, based on Tad's work studying Jacques Lacan, Sigmund Freud, Paul Tillich, and some other Continental philosophers. What is the function of ANXIETY when it comes to belief or ritual? Why do people who don't believe in God still act as though God is there anyway? What should we know about ourselves so we can confront our weaknesses more effectively? Find extensive show notes with links to books, people, websites, and resources for this episode at SparkMyMuse.com - and don't forget to contribute a few dollars to cover the costs of audio hosting and production.

Thank you for listening in. Spark My Muse is heard in 158 countries and needs listener help to pay the bills.
