It’s New Thing November!
It’s a new month, and God wants to do new things in your life. But sometimes, it feels like he’s fallen silent, like he’s not answering our prayers or coming through for us.
Why?
Today’s podcast looks into how we can’t expect God to do new things if we refuse to change old things that are holding us back.
Scripture: Isaiah 43:18-19, Hebrews 12:1-2
Book mentioned: God on Mute: Engaging the Silence of Unanswered Prayer by Pete Greig
Great article by Lisa Appelo on gratitude

Today on Spiritual Brain Surgery, Leanne Ellington Takes Over the Mic Again!
Leanne Ellington has an incredible story of chasing healing through silence, and finding God in the process.
In her own words, she describes her faith journey:
Picture this: a skeptical, bacon-loving, Hebrew-speaking Jew, embarking on a quest to explore faith after a transformative 100-pound weight loss and a series of "quarter-life crisis".It began with a whisper in my heart: "I think I might want God?!"
But not wanting to go back to the old days of temple and rabbi sermons, I found a non-denominational church in vibrant Nashville, TN that turned into a miraculous journey that filled a void in my spiritual landscape and met ME in my skepticism, doubt, and curiosity in all aspects of life.
All of a sudden this "God guy" that everyone ELSE was talking about that I had never met, and frankly never cared to meet…
...suddenly appeared to ME --and revealed, completed, and healed parts of my story I didn't even know needed attention.
Leanne has two incredible podcasts, What's God Got to Do With It? and Outweigh. She is an online coach and guide into applying neuroscience and faith to healing from body image and self-esteem issues, and we had an incredible talk.
Today, Leanne takes over the podcast for part two of her two-part journey into faith, healing, and hope.

Join me for an incredible conversation with one of my favorite authors, Mark Vroegop!
Mark is the author of one of my all-time favorite books, 2020 ECPA Christian Book of the Year, Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy.
He's back with a powerful new book, Waiting Isn't a Waste: The Surprising Comfort of Trusting God in the Uncertainties of Life.
From the publisher:
Exploring 6 Characteristics of Waiting to Prompt Wisdom from God and Gain Invaluable PeaceIn Waiting Isn't a Waste, author Mark Vroegop calls believers to resist the human urge for control and lean on Christ for comfort while we wait for the uncertainties of life to unfold. Vroegop explores what it means to wait on God through 6 important characteristics—waiting is hard, common, biblical, slow, commanded, and relational. This book not only teaches listeners how to wait on God but inspires them to embrace waiting—for it prompts wisdom from God and brings invaluable peace to the present.
Mark Vroegop (MDiv, Grand Rapids Theological Seminary) is the lead pastor of College Park Church in Indianapolis and the author of the ECPA 2020 Christian Book of the Year Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy: Discovering the Grace of Lament. He’s married to Sarah, and they have four children and three daughters-in-law.

Today, a look at the restated fifth commandment of Self-Brain Surgery: I must love tomorrow more than I hate what I'm feeling right now/I must not treat a bad feeling with a bad operation.
(Putting these here for your ease of access. New Spiritual Brain Surgery episodes coming this week!)
Scripture: Matthew 6:34
Book Mentioned: This Naked Mind by Annie Grace
The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery
I must relentlessly refuse to participate in my own demise.
I must believe that feelings are not facts, they are chemical events in my brain.
I must believe that most of my thoughts are untrue.
I must believe that my brain is designed to heal (Ryker’s Regular Legs)
I must love tomorrow more than I hate how I feel right now. (No Tomorrow Tax! Corollary: I must not treat bad feelings with bad operations.)
I must stop making an operation out of everything.
I must not perpetuate generational thought or behavioral issues in my family or start any new ones.
I must love my brain and live in such a way as to protect and improve it.
I must believe that what I’m doing I’m getting better at.
I must understand that thoughts become things.
