Split Your Head

Second episode of Season 2 and we've got the talented underground filmmaker, David Dawson. David's been carving out a unique style over the past few years, getting his friends together to shoot films that blend drama and horror together in an exciting way. His last film, "Flesh Games", took a Jackass-style mock-doc from goofy hijinx to nightmare cinema. A bit of genre-hopping sculpted to get the senses buzzing, if ya catch my drift. So naturally, David and I spent half the time talking about hardcore punk shows, haha. Don't worry there's plenty here about his films because they truly rule and he's an exciting director to keep tabs on. Either way, fun chat, fun guy, check it out! If you're in the Toronto area, his last film "Flesh Games" will be playing at Eyesore Cinema as part of Terrible Fest on Saturday March 23rd. https://terribletoonietuesday.tumblr.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@UCQ5slhAiRq5uyaa-SEZhGqw https://linktr.ee/daviddawson https://srscinemastore.com/products/flesh-games-blu-ray https://www.instagram.com/brobocop77/

The first episode of Season 2 is actually the last episode of Season 1! Yes, this particular recording was Frankenstein-ed together after numerous technical difficulties led to failed attempt after failed attempt - but we persevered because 1) THIS GUEST IS STEPHEN F**KIN' GRISCHUK, and 2) Stephen friggin' Grischuk! If you don't know him yet, you will know him soon, an indie horror filmmaker bursting with charm and zany FX. His films are barrels of fun, complete with gnarly gore and wily creatures, but you can always feel like as soon as the take ended, Grischuk and his crew burst into laughter because of how much fun they were having. I'm a big fan of his work and him as a person (he rules). So please, check this out and check out his films and thanks for hopping back. Season 2 is going to be blast! https://www.boxcreepfilms.com/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6fcbQC3OGwyiwTfP9W-qQA https://www.instagram.com/boxcreepfilms/

For this fun episode, I've got two gnarly patrons of the extreme horror underground - Christian Michelsen and Goblin O'Riley from Quality Violent Cinema! We discuss the future of QVC, as well as their various projects, including their segments for the Flesh & Blood Collection. We also touch on mixtapes, the QVC discord, their early forays into horror, John Candy, Clinic, the meaning of life, and a whole array of other stuff. It's a wild one folks. This extra special episode I've got Jared Auner from Mondo Macabro (& Neon Eagle Video) to talk about their upcoming Halloween Sale and Flash Bundle dropping on October 20th. We go over all their bangers, overlooked gems, as well as hints at what's to come during the sale and in the new year! We also dive into other films, music, and the meaning life, but don't worry if you're just wanting the goods on the sale - that's all in the first part. They're easily my favourite blu-ray label so do yourself a favour and check this out then grab a bunch of their wild flicks during the upcoming sale!

This episode might be the funniest one yet as I welcome the three dudes that produce one of my favourite podcasts: Unwatchables. Seth Troyer, Marc Dottavio, and Tony Scarpitti take extreme/challenging/avant-garde/wtf cinema analysis to a whole new level and I brought them on to pick their brains on what it's been like to endure films like Salo: 120 Days of Sodom and Space Jam: A New Legacy. We had a blast chatting about gritty, goofy, and gruesome cinema. Obviously some harsh subject matter is touched on (so heads up!) but I think the laughs offset the bad vibes of the dark content. http://unwatchablespod.com

This episode's special guest is none other than Payson Power from death metal astronauts, Tomb Mold! Payson also runs the horror & cult film long-sleeve shirt company, BodyBags, so we spent way more time gushing over Charles Bronson flicks than putrid riffs but plenty of time was still spent on Tomb Mold's brand new album, The Enduring Spirit, as well as his instrumental math-pop project, Daydream Plus! It was refreshing to talk about music along with films, so hopefully I'll have more musicians on in the future... just so long as they are as opinionated and passionate as Payson! Opening music & closing music: "Flesh As Armour" & "Whisper of the Will" from Tomb Mold's latest album, The Enduring Spirit (20 Buck Spin) https://linktr.ee/tombmold https://www.bodybagshorror.com/ https://daydreamplus.bandcamp.com/album/clues-recalled-from-memory

This episode I had a lovely chat with Baltimore-based filmmaker/visual artist/author, Scott Philip Goergens. Scott's film '29 Needles' was one of the most intense extreme horror films I've ever seen but I still managed to chat about 'Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory' with him because... well... it all connects! Watch the episode and find out. http://www.arsenicmedia.com/ https://www.unearthedfilms.com/catalog/tefm/29needles.php

This episode I'm joined by Fred Barrett, a writer for Review Online, Cineccentric and The Big Ship where he recently wrote a fascinating article on the pink film and Hisayasu Sato. Fred and I dive deep into the Japanese answer to Cronenberg (if every film was 'Crash') and get lost in the layers of existential themes... but have a swell time doing so. Jetta Weinstein joins us for an episode on the exploitation directors Mike and Roberta Findlay. Starting with their early sexploitation origins in the early 60's to Roberta's output of campy horror in the 80's (after Mike sadly was killed in a freak helicopter accident). Jetta's knowledge on these two filmmakers is astounding, which led to a fantastic chat. Be sure to check out her profile on Letterboxd where her reviews match her vast film knowledge and amazing writing! https://letterboxd.com/theironcupcake/

Interview with Vancouver-based filmmaker Louise Weard, whose recent Kickstarter campaign for her "Untitled 6 Hour Castration Project" managed to fly past the finish line! Louise and I hit it off like gangbusters, as our conversation travels all over the map of extreme cinema, the horror genre, and film in general. https://cybercraftvideo.com/ https://vimeo.com/cybercraftvideo https://www.instagram.com/weardjupiter/ https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/trans-panic/id1670348356
