  • Wisconsin Sportsman - Deer Update & Assessing Your Hunting Situation with Jeff Pritzl

On this episode of The Wisconsin Sportsman, Pierce sits down with the Wisconsin Deer Program Specialist, Jeff Pritzl to discuss all major deer hunting updates, how dynamic of a state Wisconsin is to manage deer in, how the Department of Natural Resources really operates, how public input is crucial to getting things done, why not everyone's hunting situation may be a reflection of DNR data, and how you as an individual can become an amateur biologist to accurately assess the health of your deer herd, hunting situation, and hunting expectations.

After a career in the field of biology, Jeff Pritzl now sits at the Deer Program Specialist for the Wisconsin DNR. Jeff's job is anything but easy as he looks at the wide range of struggles and experiences that deer and deer hunters deal with across a state with an extremely diverse landscape. In the Southern Farmland Region where deer can exceed 70 per square mile, to the Northern Forest Region where populations are a fraction of what they once were, there is no 'one size fits all' approach to addressing the issue of deer management in our great state.

Jeff also dives into the nuances of not only helping the DNR to manage deer populations across the state, but also the people hunting them and the challenges that come with that. People may look at data that claims there to be so many or so few deer in an area, but on a 40 acre piece, it certainly may not seem that way during the 9-day season depending on a wide range of variables. If that sounds like you, it's up to you to let the DNR know, attend you CDAC meetings, and take advantage of public input opportunities.

The guys also discuss how you can go about assessing your own deer herd and hunting situation, and how you can not only understand the sphere of influence you may have on your herd, but how you can assess the trends you're seeing over time in your area.

This is a great conversation that covers a wide range of topics, all of which should leave you thinking about how you hunt this fall. Enjoy!

    • Michigan Wild - Big Woods Bucks

On this episode of Michigan Wild, Nate Rozeveld and Hunter Sparks discuss various topics related to hunting and outdoor activities in Northern Michigan. They talk about their excitement for the upcoming hunting season, the difference between hunting the bigwoods and agriculture, and the benefits of learning from podcasts, YouTube videos, and social media. They also touch on the Michigan youth hunt, trapping, trout fishing, and the Michigan elk herd. Hunter shares his experience with the elk herd and how he fulfilled his goal of finding his first elk shed this past spring, which took a lot of effort and consistency.

Being in Northern Michigan, Hunter deals with a low deer density and he has found success targeting bucks where they seek refuge in the fall. He likes finding rublines that lead him to these secluded areas that prove a buck has been and likes to be there. Hunter then proceeds to set up an ambush with a ground blind, a tactic that is successful because there is a lack of suitable trees to hunt out of. This strategy has helped Hunter shoot some awesome bucks the past few years and is something Nate is looking forward to implementing this fall as well.

    • Oklahoma Outdoors - Muzzleloader Troubles and Family Time

This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by his long time friend Charles Admire for a little preseason BS session. The guys talk about what they have been working on over the summer to help them this upcoming fall, and quickly get into a discussion about how much things have changed since having kids. Charles and John both have 2 year olds, and Charles and his wife recently had their second child. The guys talk about getting older and the delicate life/hunting balance.

John and Charles also spend a good amount of time talking about muzzleloaders, and the challenges they bring. After using iron sights while hunting New Mexico last year, Charles has been swapping the irons out for a scope in order to hunt Oklahoma this fall. John continues to struggle getting his gun to group, and after discovering he was using too much powder, he has little time left to diagnose and problem solve before his upcoming hunting trip in Kansas this September.

Eazy shares some of his memorable experiences, like his first time hunting with his bird dog Odie and harvesting his first deer with a bow.

As a Black man in the outdoors, Eazy has faced some challenges and discrimination, but he emphasizes the importance of having patience, determination, and a mentor to help get started. He advises young, inner-city kids interested in the outdoors to find a mentor who can show them the ropes and introduce them to the community. Overall, Eazy's story highlights his love for the outdoors and his mission to encourage more diversity in hunting, fishing, and other outdoor pursuits.
