In this conversation, Kevin Creeley interviews Sam Brown, a deer hunter from North Carolina. They discuss various topics including preparing for the season, transitioning from dog hunting to bow hunting, and the importance of understanding deer behavior and patterns. They also touch on the use of bait and the impact of acorn crops on deer movement. Overall, the conversation provides insights into the strategies and experiences of a seasoned deer hunter. In this part of the conversation, Sam Brown discusses the habitat in the areas he hunts and the strategies he employs during different times of the year. He mentions that during late October to early November, he focuses on hunting pinch points and funnels near food sources, such as corn piles and oak trees. He also talks about the importance of hunting when big bucks show up in daylight and the value of listening to podcasts and learning from experienced hunters like the Drury's. Sam shares a story about a memorable hunt where he encountered trespassers but still managed to harvest a big buck. Kevin also shares a similar story of encountering a giant buck after a frustrating hunt. They both emphasize the importance of the experience and the story behind the deer, rather than just the antler size. In this final part of the conversation, Sam and Kevin discuss their experiences hunting deer during different times of the year. They talk about specific hunting trips, including one where Sam had to drag a deer a long way by himself. They also discuss the best times to hunt during the rut and how their hunting schedules are affected by family and work commitments.

Today I am breaking down some of the best tips given on the podcast this past spring but with a twist. I'm going to be applying them to deer hunting as well as turkey hunting. Now I know they are different beasts for sure, but that doesn't mean that they don't overlap. I start off talking about some of the things I love about turkey hunting that you don't get away with as easily with deer hunting, such as, scent controll is not a problem, getting to move around a lot is great, and calling and listening for calling really adds an interactive aspect that you don't always deer when hunting deer. Of course there are so many things deer hunting has taught me that help me as a turkey hunter such as, reading an animals body language, looking for sign and how to be patient. So in this episode I break down a ton of important things I've learned this turkey season that I'm going to be using this turkey season. I'm going to be using more realism in my calling. I'm also going to be positioning myself differently for my calling sequences. I'm going to be working on my mindset, putting the time in that I need to to be successful and not only that but keeping my mind sharp as well. I'll be working on patience, mastering target panic and being generous with my hunting season. I absolutely plan to check out some public land and I'm going to be going after new permissions as well. It seems there is no shortage of Turkey tactics for deer hunting and if we continue to lock in these ideas throughout all hunting disciplines were well on our way to being a better hunter!

With UKC’s giant Autumn Oaks coonhound extravaganza happening this month, Steve calls longtime friend Lee Currens of Piedmont, South Carolina to discuss their plans for the big event.
The conversation moves to the topic of the Autumn Oaks shows. Currens is an octogenarian that was a hard hunter but remains very active by showing his Treeing Walkers in major competition.
We talk about the judges UKC has selected for “The Event Where History Is Made” and talk about Lee’s experiences having judged the event three times.
The “Dog Talk At Its Finest” mantra is well-supported in this episode as two veterans discuss many facets of the coonhound sport by way of their many years of experience, Steve as the manager and Lee as a major competitor. This one provides an enjoyable look at one of the nation’s most important coonhound events.

In the latest episode of the Antler Up Podcast, host Jeremy Dinsmore sits down with good friend and down right great hunter Tom Runscavage to discuss the art of balancing a passion for hunting with the demands of work, family, and other responsibilities. Jeremy and Tom dive deep into the challenges that many hunters face when trying to find time for their favorite activity amidst home improvement projects, career obligations, and family commitments. They emphasize the importance of setting realistic expectations, being flexible with hunting plans, and the value of prioritizing family and other crucial aspects of life. Both individuals have the challenge of this balance because they each had a child at the beginning of the year. Tom having his first and Jeremy his second child.
Tom shares his wisdom on making the most out of finite time, highlighting that the joy of hunting extends beyond just harvesting a deer. The conversation explores how having the right gear, without overcomplicating things, can enhance the overall experience. On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch introduces Shaun Trump from Northern Duck Calls to the show. Shaun is as passionate about duck hunting as Mitch is about deer. So much so, that he's turned a hobby of building ducks calls into a business. After our introduction, Shaun discusses how he first got into building calls and the complexities of using a lathe and combining it with reeds and cutouts. He also discusses his experiences of hunting ducks in Arkansas, and how the culture of waterfowl hunting is much different when compared to the northeast. You are able to sense a "homesick" feeling from Shaun when he talks about Arkansas, but he quickly changes the subject to building a network and culture here in the northeast around duck hunting. If you're looking to upgrade some duck calls for this season, shop local and check out Northern Duck Calls!

This week on the Missouri Woods & Water Podcast we have an awesome Tales of the Chase episode to get you pumped up for the season that's just around the corner. Nate & Micah get to talk with Ryan Servello who took down not one, but two Missouri monsters last season with his bow. It is a great story and discussion about Ryan's background in hunting and how he was able to take down both of these deer last season. A little fair warning, the audio isn't amazing, but it works. Thanks for listening!
