Over the last few weeks, Julie’s awareness has been raised about how people make errors in their judgements of others and in this episode explains how we form our judgements of and the role of unconscious bias
No one knows everything, no one is perfect, we are all works in progress and our minds make connections and interpret them to make information personal and specific to us.
We process the information we think is specifically tailored to us as it saves us from thinking
We make thousands of decisions every day but it’s vital that the decisions that really matter are made on reflective judgement and conscious thinking, not on bias
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Everyone makes judgements about others – we all do it
- Mental cognitive bias makes our judgements irrational
- Our cognitive bias helps us to take short cuts, to save time, we have part of the picture and we make the rest up from what we think we know
- We see and hear what we want to and we think what we want to, mostly unconsciously
- Cognitive bias can mean we can lose objectivity
- Bias can cut across all aspects of business and life
- Halo and horns – halo is when someone is appraised highly in all aspects because they excel in one area. Horns is appraising someone poorly in all areas because they have one negative characteristic
- It’s how you enter and leave a room. The first and last impressions you make are the ones that count
- We all try to find sources to justify what we are thinking
- Surface bias is making our judgements based on what we see and not being prepared too deep any deeper
- You may judge based on your personal standards rather than the standards required by the organisation
- Judgements can be made based on recency, events that have occurred very recently rather than over a complete period of time
- You need to consciously lead yourself
BEST MOMENTS
‘We all have judgements and we all have biases and it’s our job to work out what they are and if they help or hinder us and change them where necessary’
‘Humans like the world to make sense’
