Doug Foley // The early church faced many difficulties as they strived to be witnesses of Jesus. They crossed lines in the cultures at the time and made many people angry. In the Book of Acts, we see Stephen face the unthinkable as he shared the story of Jesus with others. The Holy Spirit gave him the power to tell others about Jesus. The same Holy Spirit is with us in the present, encouraging us to be bold. The grace we receive from God can transform us and change our lives. Jesus paid everything on our account and freed us from sin. We just have to put our faith in him. We can choose to be bold.

It's the final episode of this mini-series with campus pastors Zach Van Dyke, O.J. Aldrich, and Garry Abbott. Today, they chat about the question of God really having our good—your good—in mind. They talk about separating our good from our comfort, understanding the character of God, believing Jesus is who he says he is, and how his plan for restoration includes us even when it seems uncomfortable or not good in the process. They also play a name-that-tune game to test their knowledge of good music!

Zach Van Dyke // Following God is not always the safe or comfortable choice. But the greatest hindrance to the mission of the Church is not persecution but the sin within us—the things that keep us from a full, rich, restorative relationship with God. As we look at the history of the early church, we’re reminded that the biggest problems a church will face are not what the world does to the church but what those who are the Church do or do not do. We’re reminded of the importance of accountability. We’re reminded of the beauty of grace. And maybe the question to ask when faced with difficult circumstances is not, “Why would God do that?” Even when circumstances feel like punishment, we can look for ways God is still gracious.

Good friends and campus pastors Zach Van Dyke, O.J. Aldrich, and Garry are back with the next episode of this mini-series! Today, they chat about how we can respond like Jesus when we're challenged (and about when we don't respond like Jesus would). They talk about empathy and finding commonality with others in our need for God's grace and forgiveness, how Jesus responded to being challenged during his time on earth, and they illuminate us to some definitions of words you may not have ever heard before.

Zach Van Dyke // The early church practiced radical generosity to serve each other and those around them. Yet generosity is not a common, natural trait for most people. Generosity is a sacrificial act. So how do we become generous people? One of the first steps is prayer for boldness because boldness goes beyond our circumstances. It’s not always greediness that prevents generosity—more often than not, it’s fear. But we have to let God’s loves for us and his promises make us bold. Boldness in God’s word leads to generosity, and generosity is about knowing others.

Garry Abbott // Jesus sees us—he doesn’t look past us—even when we’re broken. Whatever we are struggling with as individuals, God cares about our suffering. Our circumstances aren’t always a lesson. He loves us far more than that. But in times that things just don’t add up, we remember that God can bring rightness into what’s broken. Difficulty and discomfort don’t excuse us from believing God can do new things for all of us. He cares about us and he invites us to join him in his healing work in the world even though we are imperfect—to affirm dignity and to offer what we have to help people take their next steps to new life.

Today, they chat about what we can do when we're impatient for things to change. O.J. Aldrich // How are we doing as a church and how are we all doing as each of us is living as a part of the Church? In the Book of Acts, we get a picture of spiritual health to which we can aspire. We learn that God gives us his Spirit to guide us and unify us. But what does that look like, practically speaking? It looks like devotion to God’s Word and devotion to one another. Within these principles, we also need to keep radical generosity at the front of our minds. The generosity of the early church caught the attention of the world around them. What do people see when they look at the Church now? Are we living and serving in a way that shows God’s love to others?
