In this brand new podcast mini-series, campus pastors Zach Van Dyke, O.J. Aldrich, and Garry Abbott chat about ways to prioritize reading our Bibles and making time for God. They talk about their routines or helpful habits for staying in the Word, creating accountability with others, and the best place to take Worship Pastor Andy Simonds for lunch.

Garry Abbott // Is unity more than just wishful thinking—a word to throw out in conversation but an idea never able to be experienced? When Jesus left earth after his resurrection, he gave his disciples the call to be his witnesses. And he gave them the Holy Spirit to help guide them to do just that. They weren’t on their own—God met them right where they were, just as he can meet us where we are now. We are led by the same presence of God. He gives us his Spirit to teach us and convict us and move us to a place of holding the hand of God in obedience. He gives us his Spirit to help us and unify us. Because God’s message is unrelentingly, unstoppably, and unboundedly good news for all of us.

Zach Van Dyke // We get to be in the story of the history of the Church. Just as the early church played a significant role in the Book of Acts, so do we still today. This history is a traveling story—a story on the move. It’s not just history, but what continues to happen. The early church’s mission of Jesus, who he is, and what he brings us is the same mission of the Church today. And we aren’t just people biding time, satisfied with a nice church service and comfortable message, but actively placing our hope in the coming kingdom of God. We are to be witnesses of Jesus—to everyone. As we remember, rediscover, and rethink how to be the church, the question to ask is, “How can I be a witness of Jesus to anyone and everyone?”

Jim Keller // When we pray, we ask for and seek forgiveness from God. All of us need forgiveness for what separates us from God and his kingdom. We also pray to know God and be close to him. If we don’t understand why we need him, we won’t get to experience the freedom of his true forgiveness. And there is a call that is incumbent on everyone who is forgiven—not just to extend forgiveness to others but also to move forward from our own sinful patterns. When we pray, we ask God to not allow our own weakness to take us back into sin but to be delivered from evil. Confession is just the first step, but the goal is deliverance.

Michael Aitcheson // When we pray, we hope the kingdom of God will impact us here and now on earth as we wait for Jesus to establish it. “Your kingdom come” means we are asking, pleading to experience something of the future power of God to break through to our present lives, right now in current pain or joy. This invites us to see his reign and power and learn about his will on earth as it is in heaven. Our Father is also our King of creation, and he has a will that is best for our lives. God’s kingdom is his authority—his sovereignty—over all things present and future. The kingdom of God comes when the gospel is preached or shared and the word of God is used instrumentally by him to save people and bring them into his family.

Prayer is a relational act. The primary way Jesus wants us to view God in prayer is as our Father. When we pray to God the Father, our relationship with him is a commitment to who we are and not what we do. It’s unconditional. The understanding of this relationship will shape our prayer lives more than anything else. This means the primary way Jesus wants us to view ourselves in prayer is as a child—as a son or daughter. He is our perfect Father, loving us even when we hate him. When we pray, Jesus wants us to pray as family. We pray to a God who is our Father as his children, and we pray together as a family.

John Parker // As we enter a new year, let’s reflect on the past months and look ahead to how we can live out being who God has called us to be in the coming years. Disruption is where God works. Last year, we all faced many disruptions. Our sense of wellbeing was shaken. Though we should grieve where disruption has caused pain and loss, we should not assume that the work of God is to do away with our disruption but rather to lead the way through it. Let’s not wait for things to get better before fully engaging with the work of God in our lives and in the lives of those around us.

Gerald Liles // There are certain universal principles of virtue—love, grace, justice, generosity—that combine to make the best life for anyone and everyone. We each have a unique set of passions and relationships that no one else has ever had nor will have, and doing God’s will with those will be hard sometimes—but it is truly the best. We were created for adventure, but there is no such thing as an adventure without challenges to overcome. We must humbly recognize that we can sometimes mistake our will for God’s will. And we need one another as we seek salvation, comfort, and redemption.

Zach Van Dyke // Jesus came to earth for us. That is good news—fear-silencing, joy-inflicting good news! And this good news is that God forged a pathway for you, and that’s what we celebrate at Christmas. Jesus’ arrival changed everything! And following Jesus isn’t about us and what we can do for him but about what he has done for us. He lived the life we were designed to live perfectly and died the death we deserve in order to declare the defeat of sin and death through his resurrection. Jesus came to earth for us because we can’t save or fix ourselves in our mess. But that’s OK. Because he loves us and is gracious to us—and that is fear-silencing, joy-inflicting good news.

Jim Keller // Mary, the mother of Jesus, sets an example of God’s love for us. In the midst of the Christmas story many know so well—the trip to Bethlehem, the inn that was full, the lodging in the barn, the manger, the swaddling clothes—Mary looked at it all and treasured these things in her heart. Mary’s heart was full of love that night. Her story shows us a life-giving love, a loyal love, and a lasting love. We must remember not just to experience God’s love for us but also to love him in return. We are God’s handiwork, created for a purpose—each one of us. He loves us, and he gives us the power to do what he has planned perfectly for our lives.
