Hello and welcome to our second video, and podcast, this week on Mental Health!  

In this segment, we are going to talk about why it's important to claim your humanity and not feel pressured to live up to "Superhero status."  

We are human, so it's okay to be more human in the way you set and met expectations for yourself and those around you. While a certain degree of self-sacrifice is sometimes necessary, continuously on showing up for others while ignoring your own needs is not.  

Join in on the discussion, let's embrace the fact that while superheroes are great to watch on movies, it's an impossible standard to hold ourselves to, and we shouldn't aim to. Here's to being more human, and embracing that humanity has limits.

Hello and welcome to another week on Mental Health!  

I'll be sharing three attitudes that have helped me overcome the ill-effects of stress and anxiety.  

Based on CAMH, 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a Mental Health issue and 1 in 2 Canadians will experience a Mental Health issue before they reach the age of 40. While there are many factors that play into these statistics, the metrics, recognizing that stress and anxiety are not these things that we have to live with in life, there are different tools and strategies that will enable you to do away with them completely!  

So, if you are tired of having to push through stress and anxiety, and would like to hear some tips that will enable you to push through some of those challenging times, this video is for you

In this video, and podcast, we do a deeper dive into the disciplinary mechanisms that teachers use to maintain order and control in the classroom.  

More notably, how despite the removal of corporal punishment in classrooms, its alternative, is no better.

Too many teachers engage in humiliation and shaming tactics in order to keep their students in line.   

Employing these tactics are the major contributors to children becoming withdrawn, experiencing shame because they internalize their teacher's behaviour, and also why other children become aggressive, trying their best to defend themselves, despite the clear power disparity.  

The effects of shaming and humiliation are detrimental and can have long lasting effects. As a community, we need to hold the teachers that engage in this behaviour accountable, and defend the children who have lost their voice.

In this video, converted to audio for the sake of our podcast, we are discussing the importance of storytelling for children, especially during their formative years (0-8).  

More specifically, we are critiquing the history of storytelling for children at the turn of the 20th century. Modern day children stories continuously fail to provide children with objective realities from which to explore complex, real world themes.   

For centuries, myths, folklore and fables served to help children develop a strong foundation of mental resilience, grit and perseverance. The changes to the quality and depth of children's stories plays a significant role  as to why children lack the required tools to deal with many of the challenges and complexities they face in life, today.

We are discussing education this week and highlighting a specific deficiency within our education system: The Whole Word Method.  

In order for your child to learn to read, they need to learn how to identify the sounds that stem from each letter of the alphabet. Learning to read is learning to be able to crack the sound to symbol code that then opens the doors to understanding.  

The Whole Word Method doesn't do this, rather, it teaches children to read by memorizing full words, therefore putting a cap on their vocabulary. We are going to be diving into the history and the effects that this has on the generations that have been subjected to this approach. Would love to hear your points of view!
