Researching and learning all you can about birth years before you’ll be going through it can be extremely beneficial in gaining knowledge and being prepared, trying to control everything, however, will only bring you stress and anxiety. Elleah shares her three pregnancy stories with us today, her first in the hospital, her second a devastating miscarriage, and her third planned birth center birth, but ended up having that baby….somewhere else! Trusting God must be at the center of our births in order to have peace, and letting go and surrendering to the process is what God was teaching Elleah to do, especially in this last delivery.

Hospital birth, birth center birth and home birth are three very different environments one can birth in, but which should you choose and why? What kind of birth are you planning? How much should insurance play a part in your decision? How much should your husband play a part in your decision? Where do you feel most comfortable, safe, and at peace? All of this and more today as Louisa and I discuss the differences in birthing in a hospital, birth center, and at home, since both of us have given birth in each of these three environments.

Giving birth in one country isn’t the same as giving birth in another country, even if both countries speak English. It’s always important to know what you’re walking into when you walk into a hospital, no matter where you are, as they can differ from place to place. Jessica learned this firsthand with her drastic difference in care from her first birth to her next two. And sometimes, while something seems fine or OK or tolerable in the moment, years later it can hit us, and we end up needing to process through what was done to us (or our babies) long after the fact, as it can impact our future, and specifically, future pregnancies and births. All of this came together to culminate in a Holy Spirit-led free birth, one of which the enemy was trying to steal, kill, and destroy all along the way, but Jessica stood her ground in the authority she has in the name of Jesus to have her baby at home. Immediate postpartum, however, didn’t go quite as smoothly, but God was in every detail, and used every moment to create a testimony for Jessica as He called her to share her story for His glory and for the encouragement, education, and empowerment of others.

Kathryn discovered there is a different way to experience these seasons than what our society has told us. Having your first two babies at 39 weeks doesn’t mean all of your babies will come at 39 weeks. Having a beautiful, peaceful, smooth and quick natural home birth once, doesn’t guarantee that you’ll have that every time. Our expectations leading into birth and during birth have such an impact on our experiences. Jennifer learned this first hand as she had three natural births, one at the hospital and two at home, but three very different experiences. Listen and learn how surrendering her plans and expectations to God ultimately brought her the most peace.

As a first time mom, sometimes you just don’t know what you don’t know. And Emilie didn’t know she was being induced, or why. But that wasn’t all. She also got the one doctor she definitely didn’t want, and what he said during her labor will shock you (or maybe not, if you’re familiar with how some surgically minded OB’s can be). Then, as she was planning her peaceful second birth at home, everything changed last minute, and not only did she end up moving multiple states away, but tragedy struck, and she had to be without her husband during delivery. What amazes me about Emilie was her ability to see the positive in the situation, to see God’s grace and His blessings He gave her throughout the journey.

When you hire a midwife you expect to get more holistic care than when you hire an OB/GYN, but when your midwife is part of a hospital medical system, that’s not always the case. So next time you hire a midwife at a birth center, but even then, you’re still handing your care and responsibility over to another system that may or may not have your best interest at heart. So what do you do after two traumatic birth experiences at the hands of others? You have a wild pregnancy and a free birth, but you do it in connection with and guidance from God, a pivotal piece of the puzzle, if not THE biggest piece of it all.
