First, we get specific about compliments and why outcome-based praise (“you’re so smart,” “you’re naturally talented,” “you’re beautiful”) can create a fixed mindset. Next, we talk about the “parent as hero” trap. When we rush in to fix, smooth, or rescue, we may prevent embarrassment today but also block the deeper win: competence. Confidence grows when kids get to do hard things, solve problems, and see themselves as capable. Finally, we look at screen time and technology and how “safe and entertained” can come with a cost, reducing the real-world independence and problem-solving that builds resilient, confident kids.

We start with the “headphones of Zen,” which is really a mindset shift: the iceberg of behavior. When we look beneath the surface, we often find a kid who needs autonomy and control and who downshifts into dysregulation fast. That reframes “defiance” into a nervous system problem we can respond to with curiosity, empathy, and better emotional regulation, while still holding the line.  

Then we get real about the “duct tape” tool: it goes on us. It takes two people to argue, and we are the ones with the fully developed prefrontal cortex. I’ll walk you through how talking 90% less can lead to a 90% better outcome, plus how to use “name it to tame it” so your child feels understood without you getting pulled into defending, explaining, or debating.  

Finally, we use the “magic remote” approach for the most escalated moments: keep the boundary, stop the power struggle, and offer either a silent hug or space to calm down. Time to move from unorganized chaos, into... organized chaos!

Yep. Sometimes that is what the start of school feels like. I’m Flora McCormick, licensed therapist and parenting coach, and I’m sharing three sustainable parenting strategies to help you start the year with more joy and ease: plan for the worst, start family meetings, and get a life.

First, we talk about why realistic expectations are a form of kindness (honestly - to yourself AND your kids). “Plan for the worst” doesn’t mean assuming your kids will fail. It means looking ahead at what typically goes sideways, like waking up earlier, missing shoes, forgotten gear, and rushed mornings, and building a simple back-to-school routine that prevents avoidable blowups. When you feel prepared, you’re more in control of your response and less likely to swing between overly gentle parenting and overly harsh discipline.

Next, we dig into family meetings as a practical Positive Discipline tool. I walk you through a three-part structure: an appreciation circle to build connection and gratitude, one collaborative problem-solving topic so you’re not doing top-down rules or inconsistent consequences, and a small repeatable “fun finish” so kids actually buy in. 

Finally, we get honest about parent self-care. When you’re depleted, patience disappears. “Get a life” means finding one doable way to reconnect with what makes you feel like you, which helps the whole family system.

Unpopular Opinion - I know.   But it's true! I haven't meant a single PreK or Elementary Teacher who would tell me they LOVE Gentle Parenting.  But let's be real - teachers don’t hate 'gentle parenting' because they want harsh discipline. They hate what it can turn into when boundaries disappear: kids who  can't regulate their emotions, make many demands, and derail learning for the rest of the class.

I’m Flora McCormick, a licensed therapist and parenting coach, and I’m pulling together what I’ve seen for 20 plus years with what educators tell me off the record. We talk about why children are supposed to test limits, how cause and effect drives child behavior, and how our responses can accidentally train more screaming, more negotiation, and less frustration tolerance.
