Dels cinc membres originals de The Byrds, el 1968 només en quedaven dos. Buscant nous camins per mantenir la banda i gravar el sisè disc, van topar amb Gram Parsons, aleshores un músic poc conegut i obsessionat per acostar el country als joves. D'aquest panorama va néixer "Sweetheart of the rodeo", el disc que inaugurava per al gran públic el country-rock, i que avui es considera un dels millors de la banda.
