  • Parashat Lekh Lekha – "She Called God by Name"
Avital Hochstein. In this week’s parashah, we learn an important lesson about the difference between seeing and hearing, both in the context of the specific relationship between Hagar and God and in terms of human relationships more broadly. Seeing connects with the concrete; to see people means to accept their presence, to reject the possibility of avoiding them. Moreover, the experience of being seen can help a person to see, thus creating the possibility of a mutual relationship. The third of Rabbi Avital Hochstein's weekly Divrei Torah for 5777.

  • Parashat Noah – Setting Limits in Order to be in Relationship: The First Covenant in Tanakh
Avital Hochstein. The First Covenant in Tanakh. Of the many profound lessons that Parashat Noach teaches us about relationships, we'll focus on the one we learn from the covenant, the berit, that God makes with Noach in the wake of the flood. A covenant is, fundamentally, a record of the terms of a relationship. Reading the terms of a covenant can teach us about the components and terms of that relationship. This is the first covenant that appears in Tanakh and its function is self-restraint in the name of sustaining and preserving relationship. This covenant presents a model: Any successful set of relationships is predicated on knowing one’s weaknesses and putting systems in place to deal with one’s own limitations. The second of Rabbi Avital Hochstein's weekly Divrei Torah for 5777.

  • Parashat Bereishit– "Flesh of My Flesh" or "Male and Female He Created Them?"
Avital Hochstein. Two Models of Marriage and Partnership. Parashat Bereishit opens with two different descriptions of creation, descriptions that assume corollary models of partnership. The Rabbinic law seems to favor only one of these models, but a careful reading of the opening sugyot of Talmud Kiddushin reveals the other's pushback. The first of Rabbi Avital Hochstein's weekly Divrei Torah for 5777.

  • Parashat VeZot HaBerakhah–Halakhah and Community
Ethan Tucker. Today, we live in a Jewish world that is commonly bifurcated into the observant and the non-observant, the halakhic and the non-halakhic, a world in which perhaps the greatest spiritual deficits that we face are those of trust and respect. Most rabbis engaged with halakhah don’t trust the average contemporary Jew, seeing emptiness, worthlessness, laziness, and a lack of commitment. And most contemporary Jews don’t deeply value and engage the halakhic tradition they have inherited and, whether for reasons of ignorance or ideology. This was not always so. How did we take leave of that world, where rabbinic figures felt responsible for the wider Jewish community, who trusted and respected the people as a part of the halakhic conversation, and end up in our present moment? And is there any way for us to get back to that world of trust and respect?
