Westminster, Colorado. Feb 14, 1999. When Rich Lesmeister got the call that his friend, Paul Skiba, was missing, he asked right away if there was anything he could do to help. The call was from Paul’s on-off girlfriend, Teresa Donovan. It wasn’t just Paul that was missing, Teresa said. His daughter, Sarah, and his employee, Lorenzo Chivers, had also vanished. No one had seen the them since February 7, exactly a week before. Rich and his wife Carol went to the address where Paul’s moving business, Tuff Movers, was located. Smeared across the side of one of the large moving trucks was what appeared to be blood. Another truck had several bullet holes in it. On realizing that it was a crime scene, Rich and Carol called the police.

When Frank and Allison Contreras asked Cassie Jo Stoddart, their 16-year-old niece, to house sit and look after their pets for the weekend, Cassie happily obliged. Cassie enjoyed spending time at their house, which was large and in a pretty remote area. Frank and Allison also told Cassie that her boyfriend, Matt, could hang out at the house with her while they were away. Cassie was excited; she had no reason to believe anything bad would happen. Lubbock, Texas. September 13, 2005. A worker at the Lubbock City landfill spotted what looked like a brand new suitcase amongst the heaps of trash. It was a miracle that it caught his eye, given the sheer size and depth of the landfill. It wasn't something that he saw every day, so he decided to investigate. He would never forget what he found inside. The woman was naked and curled into a fetal position. Her body was covered in bruises. On her ankle was a tattoo of the word “Summer”.

Washington D.C. April 25, 1971. 13-year-old Carol Spinks purchased TV dinners and bread from the 7-Eleven, as she had been asked by her older sister, then began walking the half-mile home. But she never made it. Six days later, Carol's body was found discarded on the side of the freeway. Carol's murder was horrifying, but little did D.C. investigators know, the terror was only just beginning. Between May 1971 and September 1972, the bodies of six African American girls would be found along the side of the freeway. The killer, who is to this day known only by the moniker "The Freeway Phantom", was never apprehended. 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of five of six Freeway Phantom murders.

Columbia, Missouri. 2004. When a group of friends saw a young male student lying on the ground between two apartment buildings on the University of Missouri campus, they thought he was just passed out from a night of heavy drinking. However, on closer inspection, they saw blood everywhere. When police arrived, they initially considered that perhaps he had fallen after trying to jump from the roof of one building to another. But it quickly became clear that this was not the case.
