Mary Louvestre (1812-1883) was a woman of extraordinary courage and determination who lived in Southside Hampton Roads, Virginia during the American Civil War. She was a spy for the Union Army, risking her own life to help the cause.

She risked this all as a free, African American woman, at the age of 49.

The Alexandria National Cemetery holds the graves of many notable figures, including Samuel Cooper, James Mason, Julius Campbell, Dennis Ramsey, Robert Allison Jr., and Wilmer McLean. Each of these individuals have had an impact on history, whether through their service in the military, their political work, or other contributions. The cemetery also holds the grave of Joseph McCoy, who was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

The Loving v. Virginia case was a landmark decision by the Supreme Court of the United States, which struck down all anti-miscegenation laws in the country in 1967. The case centered around Richard and Mildred Loving, a white man and a black woman who were married in Virginia in 1958 and were subsequently arrested for violating the state’s anti-miscegenation laws. The Lovings were forced to leave Virginia and were barred from returning until their case was heard by the Supreme Court. In the landmark decision, the Supreme Court unanimously struck down all anti-miscegenation laws in the country, declaring them unconstitutional. The Loving v. Virginia case is remembered as a landmark moment in the civil rights movement and is still celebrated today.

Shawn Curtis is a 24-year veteran Social Studies Teacher with a Master's in Education. He has been a teacher in Wyoming, New Jersey, Ohio, and Indiana and has taught a variety of subjects that have included Economics, Government, and yes our favorite...History!

Shawn has studied culture all over the world, from working in a Russian Orphanage, helping construct a school in Guatemala, to leading students to Greece, Italy, France, and this summer to Eastern Europe.

2 summers ago, they received a grant from the Eli Lilly Foundation to travel Route 66 for 2 weeks and record American culture in a pandemic world.

Shawn's TRUE historical passion is the stories of the underdog and those that history has wounded. His classroom is framed with pictures of figures like Jack Johnson, Josh Gibson, and Aaron Burr.

Shawn has been a card-carrying member of the Aaron Burr Association ever since he first discovered the history of Aaron Burr at the University of Wyoming in the 90s, and he has been working to clear Burr's name ever since.

I can't remember a time when so much history has been so concentrated in one "Fort" as it is at Fort Monroe in Virginia. This 400-year-old army fort was the site of some of the first ever Africans that landed in America as well as a safe haven for enslaved during the American Civil War. Jefferson Davis was imprisoned there, Edgar Allen Poe served there, and Robert E. Lee helped build it...the history is endless.
