  • Ep 10 | Bishops In Early Christianity

Bonus episode! Why isn’t Paul addressing bishops in his letters? What does this have to do with the Pastoral epistles (1-2 Timothy and Titus)? When did the first bishops arise? What does this have to do with the dating of the Pastoral epistles? In this podcast, Mike addresses these and other issues in Christian history. This is a supplement to the podcast posted on 1-2 Timothy and Titus. More show notes can be accessed here: https://www.ldsscriptureteachings.org/2019/11/10/bishops-in-early-christianity/For more information regarding levels of Pseudepigraphy, see: https://www.ldsscriptureteachings.org/2019/11/10/layers-of-pseudepigraphy-authorship-issues-in-the-epistles/

  • Ep 8 | Hebrews, Come Follow Me 2019 (Nov 4-17)

Readers of Hebrews often ask, “What is the point of the book of Hebrews? Who wrote this document? Is it even important?”

In this podcast Mike & Bryce discuss the text known as the book of Hebrews. They discuss some of the issues the early Christians had regarding their doubts about Jesus, why Judaism mattered at the time the text was written, and why it was (probably) written before a major historical event in religious history. Bryce masterfully ties the issues in Hebrews to Latter-day Saint followers of Jesus, showing how and why this text matters today.

  • Ep 7 | Philemon, Come Follow Me 2019 (Oct 28-Nov 3)

What is going on in Philemon? Did he (Philemon) really “own” a person? Was slavery permitted in early Christianity? How were the seeds of the liberation of slaves planted in the text of the New Testament? Why did the King James Translators write “servant” when the word “slave” was in the text? How can we apply this text? How do the lessons in Philemon apply to obedience and freedom? All this (and more!) are covered in the next 19 minutes.

    Extensive show notes on Philemon

Here you can read all about the divergent Old Testament slave laws.

  • Ep 6 | 1 & 2 Timothy & Titus, Come Follow Me 2019 (Oct 28-Nov 3)

Why are 1-2 Timothy and Titus called “The Pastoral Epistles”? Why were these books written? If you only had a minute to cover the main idea of these three letters, what would you say? Bryce and Mike give a great approach to the overall idea of these 3 small letters that comes to us right out of the Book of Mormon – 3 Nephi 19. Knowing this helps us see how vital this principle is in our day.

  • Ep 5 | 1 & 2 Thessalonians, Come Follow Me 2019 (Oct 21-27)

Can Paul be right about things pertaining to the Second Coming but be off on his timing? What are some ways we can use these texts to teach others that have relevance today? Why should we study these two letters? How are they similar and how are they different? Show notes on 1 Thessalonians: https://www.ldsscriptureteachings.org/2019/10/13/1-thessalonians/ Show notes on 2 Thessalonians: https://www.ldsscriptureteachings.org/2019/10/13/2-thessalonians-apostasy-the-man-of-sin-and-lazy-christians/

What does the word “rapture” mean and how is this coming to us from these letters? See: https://www.ldsscriptureteachings.org/2019/10/11/1st-and-2nd-thessalonians-becoming-converted/

  • Ep 4 | Philippians & Colossians, Come Follow Me 2019 (Oct 14-20)

Paul is happy in Philippians (even though he is in prison). Why? Why is Paul so full of joy as he writes this text? How can Philippians teach me more about sacred ordinances and coming unto Jesus? Learn some cool Greek words: koinonia, summorphizo, and katalambano – see how these words relate to the temple. How does this text teach me more about the Lord and his plans in bringing us joy? To access the show notes on Philippians, go here.

Colossians talks about Jesus and sounds very much like John 1.1-18. This was probably an early Christian hymn that was placed in this text showing readers what early Christians believed about Jesus. What was the heresy Paul was addressing in this text? Was this related to Gnosticism? What is Gnosticism? How does this relate to modern Latter-day Saints? To read the show notes on Colossians, go here.

Mike and Bryce address these questions (and more!) in this podcast. Many thanks to Jeff Harmon for helping us get the technical stuff worked out and Rachel Hood for making our logo! Great work!

  • Ep 3 | Ephesians, Come Follow Me 2019 (Sept 30-Oct 13)

What is going on in Ephesians? How does grace and faith work in our salvation? What are “household codes” and what exactly is Paul saying in Ephesians 5.22-6.9? How is Ephesians 1 all about the temple and First Temple Israelite religion and why is this relevant to a Latter-day Saint? How does D&C 124 of the Doctrine and Covenants relate to Ephesians? Who wrote this text? Want to hear Mike literally forget the name of the young man in Aladdin? (Hint: his name is Aladdin!) All these questions (and more!) are worked through in this podcast. Thank you for listening! For more on how the text of Ephesians 1 is all about the Temple, Heavenly Father, and our eternal identities, you can read the show notes here.

  • Ep 2 | Galatians, Come Follow Me 2019 (Sept 23–29)

Why is Paul so upset? Why does Paul call the Galatians “foolish”? What is the schoolmaster? Mike and Bryce discuss choosing to have faith and caging the natural man, illustrating ways that the epistle to the Galatians (one of the earliest Christian documents) has relevance today.
