Two survivors. Two very different experiences. One unexpected connection.
Terra Newell sits down with Kara Robinson Chamberlain and Bonnie Lou to discuss *The Serial Killer Connection*, the documentary’s investigation into possible links between cases, and the powerful survivor connection that grew along the way.
Kara was kidnapped at 15, escaped, and later worked in law enforcement and victims advocacy. Bonnie was married to a man she learned was a serial killer years after their divorce. **Bonnie also has a book coming out this November, sharing more of her story.**
In this conversation, they talk about how they connected, what it means to share their stories publicly, and why survivors deserve support—not blame. They also explore the challenges of investigating cold cases, including evidence limitations, missing records, and the importance of staying open to possibilities without rushing to conclusions.
At its heart, this episode is about ethical true-crime storytelling, survivor advocacy, and the power of showing up for one another.
Watch to hear Terra, Kara, and Bonnie discuss the people and questions behind *The Serial Killer Connection*.

In this powerful conversation, Terra Newell speaks with criminologist and victimologist Dr. Danielle Slakoff about the ethics of true crime, the impact of media on co-victims, and why accuracy and empathy matter so much in storytelling. Danielle shares findings from her research with 20 co-victims, revealing both the harms and the surprising benefits of true crime coverage — from misinformation, sensationalism, and privacy invasion to awareness, education, and pressure on law enforcement.
They also explore how the true crime industry has changed, why professional standards are urgently needed, and what creators can do to better protect the people whose stories they tell. Danielle opens up about her own journey, the role grief played in shaping her research, and how her work in documentaries has deepened her commitment to ethical storytelling. If you care about true crime, media responsibility, or survivor-centered reporting, this episode is a must-listen.
About Dr. Slakoff
Dr. Danielle Slakoff is an award-winning Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). She is a nationally-recognized expert on the media's portrayal of the criminal justice system and violence against women. Dr. Slakoff utilizes her degrees in journalism and criminal justice to provide a foundational basis for her research.
She is widely recognized for her extensive research on the "Missing White Woman Syndrome," examining how women and girls of color are portrayed differently than white women and girls in crime news coverage. Her more recent work investigates the ethical dimensions of true crime media and its impact on the loved ones of victims and missing persons. Dr. Slakoff also conducts research on intimate partner violence and victimology.

Escaping Pearadise: Ivy & Emily Expose the Dark Side of a Viral Community
What happens when a place that promises acceptance, belonging, and body positivity hides something far more dangerous beneath the surface?
In this powerful episode, Terra sits down with Ivy and Emily Kask from Investigation Discovery's Big Girls Wanted: Escaping Pearadise to discuss their experiences inside the controversial Pearadise community and the devastating realities they say existed behind the scenes.
Together, they unpack how vulnerable women searching for connection became entangled in a culture that blurred the lines between empowerment, exploitation, and coercive control. Ivy and Emily share the red flags they missed, the manipulation tactics they experienced, and how seemingly harmless online interactions evolved into something far more concerning.
The conversation explores feederism, grooming, power dynamics, cult-like environments, toxic relationships, body autonomy, and the psychological impact of communities built around unhealthy dependency. They discuss the role social media played in normalizing harmful behaviors, how enablers protect harmful systems, and why leaving these environments can be far more difficult than outsiders realize.
Most importantly, Ivy and Emily share what healing has looked like on the other side—from therapy and self-discovery to rebuilding trust in themselves and reclaiming their worth.
This episode is an important conversation about recognizing warning signs, protecting your mental health, and understanding how manipulation can hide behind the appearance of acceptance and community.
In this episode, we discuss:
• The reality behind Escaping Pearadise
• Coercive control and psychological manipulation
• Feederism and exploitation within online communities
• Grooming, narcissistic behavior, and cult-like dynamics
• Red flags to watch for in relationships and communities
• The impact of trauma on self-worth and decision-making
• Therapy, healing, and rebuilding after toxic environments
• Why awareness and education can save lives
Whether you're a survivor, advocate, mental health professional, or simply curious about how manipulation operates behind closed doors, this conversation offers valuable insight into the power of awareness, boundaries, and recovery.
Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of coercive control, emotional abuse, manipulation, sexual exploitation, eating disorders, and trauma.
