June 14, 2021 SERIAL KILLER: Bruce George Lee (The 12 Year Old Arsonist)
This week Sophie take us back to Hull in the 1970's to tell us about Bruce George Lee, an arsonist whose pyromaniac tendencies led to the deaths of at least 15 people, including men, women and children.
Born the son of a sex worker, his mother would routinely call her son a 'freak' due to his epileptic fits and his deformed right arm, he was raised in various care homes. At the age of just nine years old, he committed his first crime of renown. He caused a fire at a shopping centre that caused £17,000 worth of damage. (That's nearly £250,000 in today's money!)
He would go on to commit a total of 30 fires, but most of these were initially ruled as accidents until a fire on Selby Street, where whilst being interviewed by police about this case, he confessed to starting that fire and many others.

May 31, 2021 MURDER: George Joseph Smith (the Brides in the Bathtub Murders)
In light of Sophie's upcoming nuptials, Shaun tells us the story of The Blackbeard of the Bath, the Brides in the Bathtub Murderer: George Joseph Smith.
Born in the late 1870s, Smith was a petty criminal, conman, bigamist and murderer who, initially, merely stole and defrauded money from the women he charmed under the pretence of marriage before leaving them penniless. When this didn't satisfying his seemingly insatiable greed, he turned to more nefarious means; that of murder.
He would set up the scenario that each of his three victims were frail or suffered with a fit by calling a doctor, who would diagnose the symptoms. Diagnosis complete he would have his new bride take out life insurance and re-write the will, making him sole beneficiary. Then, with this trifecta in place, he would murder them while they bathed. And he would have probably gone on to kill more than three had it not been for the watchful eyes of a Blackpool landlady, some great police work and top notch (if dubious) forensic work!

May 24, 2021 UNEXPLAINED: June and Jennifer Gibbons - The Silent Twins
This week Sophie tells us about June and Jennifer Gibbons, a pair of twins who communicated only with themselves in a language only they understood, earning them the nick name of 'The Silent Twins'.
The two girls were inseparable and despite seeing a succession of therapists, refused to communicate with others. An attempt to separate them by sending them to different boarding school, proved fruitless as both girls became catatonic and entirely withdrawn without the other.
In their late teens, the began experimenting with drugs and alcohol, resulting in them committing a series of crimes, resulting in them both being admitted to Broadmoor Hospital, where they would spend 12 years before being released thanks to the efforts of journalist, Majorie Williams.
The girls held an understanding that should one of them die, the other must go on and live a normal life. And it was during their time at Broadmoor, that they felt it was a necessity that one of them must die.
