ದಖನಿ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿನ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಭಾಷೆ. ನಮಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವರಿಗೆ ಇದರ ಪರಿಚಯವಿದ್ದರೂ ಇದರ ಹೆಸರು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕತೆಯ ಅರಿವಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ, ಆಂಧ್ರ ಪ್ರದೇಶ, ತೆಲಂಗಾಣ, ತಮಿಳು ನಾಡು ಮತ್ತು ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಿರುವ ಉರ್ದು ಭಾಷೆಯ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಭೇದ. ದಖನಿಗೆ 600 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿದ್ದು, ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವನ್ನೂ ಹೊಂದಿದೆ.

Dakhni is one South India's major languages, but many of us don't even know the language by name. A language spoken in parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, Dakhni has a 600+ year history of literature, traditions and widespread use.

Professors Zabiulla and Shanthkumar Patil are on Episode 31 of Thale Harate to help us understand Dakhni better. They talk to Surya Prakash BS and Pavan Srinath about the language, its history, how it differs from Urdu and share many proverbs in the language.

Mr Zabiulla is a Urdu professor at the Government First Grade College in Channapatna and Mr Shanthkumar Patil is a professor at the Government First Grade College in Chitguppa, Bidar. Zabiulla has recently published a book called Dakni Kahawaten, crowdsourcing and compiling over 500 proverbs in Dakhini. Currently available in Urdu / Nastalik, efforts are underway to have it available in Kannada as well. ಇನ್ನೂರು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿನ ಜೀವನ, ಸಮಾಜ ಮತ್ತು ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಹೇಗಿತ್ತು? ಬ್ರಿಟೀಷರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಗಿಂತ ಮುಂಚೆ ರಾಜ್ಯಭಾರ ಹೇಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಟಿಪ್ಪು ಸುಲ್ತಾನಿನ ಸೋಲಿನ ನಂತರ ಈಸ್ಟ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಕಂಪನಿಯ ಕೋರಿಕೆ ಮೇಲೆ ಜಾನ್ ಬ್ಯುಖಾನನ್ ರವರು ಮೈಸೂರು ದೇಶವನ್ನು ಸಂಚಾರ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಸುಮಾರು 4,000 ಕಿಲೋಮೀಟರು ಮತ್ತು ನೂರಾರು ಸ್ಥಳಗಳ ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಮಾಡಿ 1807ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರವಾಸಕಥನವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದರು.

How was life, society and economy in Karnataka 200 years ago? How was the state administered and inhabited before the advent of British colonial power? Francis Buchanan was commissioned by the British East India Company to travel through the region soon after the defeat of Mysore under Tipu Sultan. Buchanan traveled over 4,000 kilometres in two years and visited several hundred places in the region. In 1807, he published 'A journey from Madras through the countries of Mysore, Canara and Malabar', providing a comprehensive, illustrated narrative of his extensive travels and discussions. They offer a unique insight in the life and times of the region at the dawn of the 19th century.

Lingaraj Jayaprakash is a researcher at the Sustainable Futures Lab at McGill University who works on environment and development. As we have seen an acute water shortage in Chennai and struggles in other cities too, we are rebroadcasting this episode where S.Vishwanath talks about how a city like Bengaluru can ensure safe and sufficient water for all.

Time and again, we hear that the city of Bengaluru will run out of water. Depending on where you hear this alarm from, the year could be 2020, 2025 or 2030. Everyone from the BBC to the Niti Aayog to city experts have claimed that the city is doomed.

Is this really true? Water is a scarce resource, but water availability is not Bengaluru's challenge, says S Vishwanath, our guest on Episode 13 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast. He says that the real challenge in is the sustainable utilisation and distribution of water, and this is where the government, communities and individuals have play their role in doing so.

S Vishwanath is the founder of Rainwater Club and is a Director at Biome Environmental Trust. He has worked extensively on water and sanitation issues in Bengaluru, Karnataka and India. Vishwanath is popular on social media as @Zenrainman, and has been tireless in his efforts to educate people about water and sanitation, and what solutions can make a difference at every level of action.

Vishwanath talks to hosts Pavan Srinath and Surya Prakash BS shares a historical perspective to Bengaluru's water woes, and touches on various aspects of water -- from the role of the government and the BWSSB, to groundwater and its management, the role of open wells, borewells and tankers in the city – all the way to wastewater and sewerage, and the role of Bengaluru's many lakes. It is definitely a challenge to provide clean, safe and adequate drinking water to residents of the Bengaluru megapolis, but far from impossible.

ಚೌಕಾಬಾರ, ಅಲುಗುಳಿಮನೆ, ಪಗಡೆ, ಇಂತಹ ಹಲವಾರು ಆಟಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಈಚೀನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಡಿಜಿಟಲ್ ಆಟಗಳ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಮರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಹಲವು ತಲೆಮಾರುಗಳಿಂದ ಬಂದ ಈ ಆಟಗಳಿಗೆ ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ ನೀಡಿರುವವರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರು ಶ್ರೀರಂಜಿನಿ ಅವರು.

There are many board games across the world. Although, several of them originated in India, they are on the brink of extinction. Sreeranjini is one of those individuals who are endeavouring to revive the interest of ancient board games in India. How does democracy operate at the most local level, and how does it go beyond voting and elections? In Episode 23, Vijayendra Rao talks to Pavan Srinath and Ganesh Chakravarthi about India's Gram Sabhas, one of India's biggest democratic successes since independence.

Vijayendra Rao is a Lead Economist in the Development Research Group of the World Bank, who has been studying local governance, participation, democracy and development in India and elsewhere for the last two decades and more. His latest book is on Oral Democracy: Deliberation in Indian Village Assemblies, which he has co-authored with Paromita Sanyal. The full book is available online. In their book, they have recorded and analysed over 300 Gram Sabha discussions across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh to examine the quality of deliberation and consensus-based decision-making. Dr Rao talks about what they learnt about Gram Sabhas, and about how government policies and literacy can influence the quality of local discussions.
