ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಇನ್ನೇನು ತನ್ನ ನೀರಿನ ಮೂಲಗಳು ಬರಿದಾಗಿ ಜಲಕ್ಷಾಮವನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸಲಿದೆಯೆಂದು ಆಗಾಗ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಬಿ.ಬಿ.ಸಿ. ಯಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು, ನೀತಿ ಆಯೋಗ ಮತ್ತು ಹಲವಾರು ನಗರದ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ತಜ್ಞರ ವರೆಗೆ ಇದು 2020, 2025 ಅಥವಾ 2030 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಭವಿಸಬಹುದು.

ಈ ನಿಲುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಷ್ಟು ನಿಜಾಂಶವಿದೆ? ನೀರು ವಿರಳವಿರಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮುಂದಿರುವ ಸವಾಲು ಅದರ ಅಲಭ್ಯತೆಯಲ್ಲ. ನಮ್ಮ ಈ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಯ ಅತಿಥಿ ಎಸ್. ವಿಶ್ವನಾಥ್ ರವರು ತಿಳಿಸುವಂತೆ ನಿಜವಾದ ಸವಾಲಿರುವುದು ನೀರಿನ ಸದ್ಬಳಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಸಮರ್ಥ ವಿತರಣೆಯದ್ದು. ಈ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ಕಾರ, ಸಮಾಜ ಮತ್ತು ನಾವುಗಳು ಮಹತ್ವವಾದ ಪಾತ್ರ ವಹಿಸಬಹುದು.

Time and again, we hear that the city of Bengaluru will run out of water. Depending on where you hear this alarm from, the year could be 2020, 2025 or 2030. Everyone from the BBC to the Niti Aayog to city experts have claimed that the city is doomed.

Is this really true? Water is a scarce resource, but water availability is not Bengaluru's challenge, says S Vishwanath, our guest on Episode 13 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast. He says that the real challenge in is the sustainable utilisation and distribution of water, and this is where the government, communities and individuals have play their role in doing so.

S Vishwanath is the founder of Rainwater Club and is a Director at Biome Environmental Trust. He has worked extensively on water and sanitation issues in Bengaluru, Karnataka and India. Vishwanath is popular on social media as @Zenrainman, and has been tireless in his efforts to educate people about water and sanitation, and what solutions can make a difference at every level of action.

Vishwanath talks to hosts Pavan Srinath and Surya Prakash BS shares a historical perspective to Bengaluru's water woes, and touches on various aspects of water -- from the role of the government and the BWSSB, to groundwater and its management, the role of open wells, borewells and tankers in the city – all the way to wastewater and sewerage, and the role of Bengaluru's many lakes. It is definitely a challenge to provide clean, safe and adequate drinking water to residents of the Bengaluru megapolis, but far from impossible.

What did romantic poetry in India sound like, over a thousand years ago? Ramaprasad KV has an in-depth conversation on the Amaru-Shataka with hosts Pavan Srinath and Surya Prakash BS on Episode 12 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast. The Amaru-Shataka is a celebrated collection of 100 verses written in Sanskrit around 6th-8th century CE by the poet Amaruka.

Ramaprasad has translated the Amaru-Shataka from Sanskrit into accessible Kannada, and talks about the immortal nature of this work, the timeless appeal of how the poet has approached the conversations and thoughts of those in love. The podcast features a wide-ranging discussion on the social and economic conditions that may have enabled such poetry, its history, rhyme and metre, as well as about ancient Indian literature.

The state plans to spend over 2.34 lakh crore rupees this year -- over 34,000 rupees per resident! 50% larger than the Union budget per person, and the state government's mandate covers all things that matter to our daily lives, from water and health to roads and transport to agriculture.

Ganesh Chakravarthi talks to Pavan Srinath to unpack the Karnataka budget. They discuss where Karnataka gets its revenues from, how much importance is given to Bengaluru, health challenges and more. Pavan has been working on budgets for the past several years at the Takshashila Institution, and also hosts The Pragati Podcast.

Surya is a Chartered Accountant by training, has managed taxes for large corporations in the past, and currently works on judicial reforms at Daksh. Pavan has been working as a researcher and analyst at the Takshashila Institution examining state budgets, health and defence budgets for several years.

This episode includes discussions on the quirks of India's government budgeting system, on how taxes are levied, new schemes announced by the government, and expenditure on a range of subjects from farmers to health to defence to pensions and social security.
