It's the week of election results in India, and the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast is taking a break this week to watch the results alongside the rest of you.

Every time we have national elections in India, it's seen as the biggest exercise of democracy in the world. But democracy also needs to exist at all levels, starting from our villages. Expect two episodes from us next week, where we talk about gram sabhas, panchayati raj and a lot more.

Imagine a world without films. Sounds almost impossible, doesn't it? The grand picture we see in a packed theatre provides a glimpse into the world that exists beyond the silver screen. How difficult is it to actually make a movie?

This week's episode features Hemanth M Rao, director of two blockbuster films in Kannada, Godhi Banna Saadharana Maikattu and Kavaludaari. Hemanth Rao is also one of the screenwriters of the Bollywood superhit, Andhadhun.

In Episode 22 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast, Hemanth Rao talks to the host Ganesh Chakravarthi about how he ventured into films, his screenwriting career, about Kannada cinema and the film industry.

We need more cutting-edge research happening in India, but what do we need to do to make it happen? Vishwesha Guttal joins Pavan Srinath and Ganesh Chakravarthi on Episode 21 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast to talk about his life as an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

Vishwesha Guttal has a PhD in Physics and heads the Guttal Lab at the Centre for Ecological Sciences at IISc. He and his lab members apply physics and mathematical tools to understand important problems like ecosystem collapse and group behaviour of animals. On the podcast, Vishu talks to the hosts about physics and ecology, and the questions they try to answer in their lab. He also talks about the life of a researcher in academia, and how to enable the best scientific minds to do world class research in India.

We often think about how children are being educated in India, or the state of malnutrition in our country -- but do we ever think holistically about India's children? Lalita Pulavarti joins Pavan Srinath on Episode 20 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast to talk about the challenges faced by the 470 million+ children in India.

Lalita Pulavarti is a senior researcher with a PhD in Sociology and has worked on a wide range of governance issues, conducting numerous surveys and studies. Till recently, Lalita worked with the Public Affairs Foundation in Bengaluru, and while there – she co-authored a chapter on Children of India, as a part of the 2018 Public Affairs Index. The chapter includes a Child Rights Index, an attempt to systematically collate data on the state of children in India's states.

ಚುನಾವಣೆ ಅನ್ನೋದು ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಹಬ್ಬಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಕಮ್ಮಿ ಏನೂ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ನಗರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತದಾನ ಮಾಡಲು ಏಕೆ ಅಷ್ಟು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಜನರು ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ? ಈ ವರ್ಷ ಏನಾದರೂ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಕಾಣಬಹುದೆ?

Elections are like a grand festival to many in India, and here in Bangalore. But why do so few city residents go out to vote? Could that possibly change this year? Raghavendra HS joins Ganesh Chakravarthi and Pavan Srinath on this special episode to talk about the madness of elections in the city, and to talk about why voting without taking gifts or favours matters.

Raghavendra is a journalist and currently manages the Civic Leadership Incubation Programme (B.CLIP) at the Bangalore Political Action Committee (B.PAC), where about 60-70 aspiring civic leaders and local politicians are trained every year in the fundamentals of urban development and governance. The Takshashila Institution is a knowledge partner for this programme, providing the classroom training. Our host Ganesh has been managing this programme for the last three batches.

Karthik Shashidhar is a management consultant and data scientist who has worked and written extensively on Indian elections and Indian opinion polls. Karthik also wrote a regular column in Mint called Election Metrics, analysing Indian elections and polls since 2013 using data.

Problems of pendency and long time taken for rendering justice by the Indian judiciary is well known. In this introductory episode, Surya Prakash gives an overview of the judiciary and its structure. In their efforts, they were responsible for one of the richest archeological findings of the city in decades in a quiet corner of Hebbal. What secrets do hero stones (Veeragallu) and other artifacts of history reveal about the development and the history of the city?

ತಲೆ-ಹರಟೆ ಪಾಡ್ಕ್ಯಾಸ್ಟಿನ ಈ ವಾರದ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ್ ಪಂಡಿತ್ ನಮ್ಮ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ್ ಬಿ ಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ಪವನ್ ಶ್ರೀನಾಥ್ ಜೊತೆ ಡಿ.ವಿ.ಜಿ. ಯವರ ಜೀವನ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯೇತರ ಸಾಧನೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪಂಡಿತ್ ರವರು ಈಗ ಪ್ರಜಾವಾಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು, ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಅಭಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

Devanahalli Venkataramanappa Gundappa (17 March 1887 – 7 October 1975), popularly known as DVG, is known for his poems, lyrics and essays in Kannada. His Mankutimmana Kagga (1943), a collection of 945 quatrains on the philosophy of life, is the second most reprinted work of poetry in Kannada (after Mysuru Mallige). But DVG was a man of many parts, a polymath who actively participated in the politics of pre-Independence Mysore, and a journalist. His pen portraits (Jnaapaka Chitrashale) give us a vivid picture of the of dewans, durbars, freedom fighters, politicians, artists and priests of old Mysore region from late 19th century to early 1950s . It also allows us to imagine a personality whose range of works included a biography of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, a translation of Macbeth, a translation of verses of Omar Khayam, the Ishavasyopanishad as well as a Principles of Constitution and a handbook for journalists!

DVG was deeply influenced by the life of Gopal Krishna Gokhale and set up the Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA) in Bangalore, which remains active to this day. Its magazine ‘Public Affairs’ contain his sharp and perceptive views on post-Independent India’s politics and policy. The Public Affairs is available online and can be accessed here.
