  • 061: Kori Estrada — Kids & Dental Health

If you’re still using conventional toothpaste, know that the biggest brands in oral care have often been the biggest culprits for containing harmful ingredients like fluoride, triclosan, and calcium chloride to name a few. It’s safe to say, we unknowingly ingest a lot of poison every year just by brushing our teeth.

Risks from simply ingesting a fluoride toothpaste include permanent tooth discoloration (dental fluorosis), stomach ailments, acute toxicity, skin rashes (perioral dermatitis), and impairment in glucose metabolism.

Therefore, I encourage you to do your research and make a switch to organic oral care for yourself and most definitely your kids.

On today’s show, I’ll be chatting with Kori Estrada, the Co-Founder of the new natural oral care company RiseWell, and co-CIO of Axon Capital, an asset management firm in New York. With a focus on consumer, technology and healthcare related investments throughout her career in both public and private markets, Kori is passionate about innovative companies and brands that are moving the needle in these specific industries. Prior to joining Axon Capital, Kori was an Associate at Shumway Capital Partners and an Analyst in the Investment Banking Division at UBS Investment Bank. She received her BA from Columbia University majoring in Economics and Philosophy. In her spare time, she can be found fishing with her husband and fellow Co-Founder John in the North Fork of Long Island, spending time with her 2-year old son Leo or cooking healthy recipes for her personal blog KoKoButter.com.

  • 059: Jill & Mark Willard — Owning Your Power of Intuition

I want to begin this episode with my story. Storytelling is my passion because I love that stories have the power to bond generations and humanity. I fondly remember listening to the stories of my grandmother, from the life lessons in the epic Ramayana to her family’s struggle as refugees during India’s partition in 1947. Storytelling has been the common denominator in my career. I worked as a television anchor and producer for CNN International where I had the opportunity to share the shocking stories of survivors of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks to the back stories of some of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters to a viewership of over 100 million people. Now, as an entrepreneur, I help my digital marketing clients tell their brand story, and as a mom of 3 with this podcast as my vehicle, I have the privilege of sharing the personal stories of thought leaders and experts who are mothers and fathers to converse with me about their experiences of how to problem solve as parents, lead a purposeful life, and a legacy they can be proud of for our children.

I have always been a fervent believer of intuition. Hence the name of my show, “That’s Total Mom Sense.” I want to encourage all of you listening, especially first time parents who are nervous and weary, to trust your innate superpower, your mom sense or dad sense, when it comes to your kids - it will always set you on the right path.

I am prefacing with this because I am SO honored to interview my two guests today who as husband and wife are born storytellers and are pioneers in helping others tap into intuition. Mark Willard is a beloved television and radio personality and understands what it means to connect with an audience and tell a story. His wife Jill Willard is a gifted intuitive and has a keen sense of what’s going on with her family, people, and the world.

Mark Willard has been on the radio and television airwaves throughout California and nationally since 2001. As of early 2019 he returned to his home market of San Francisco to host the “Mark Willard Show” weekdays 6-10pm, on the legendary KNBR 104.5 FM & 680 AM. Willard’s move to SF came after a 2 1/2 year run hosting middays Noon-3 on the Mark & Rich Show on XTRA 1360 Fox Sports San Diego. He had also anchored the weekend lineup nationally on Fox Sports Radio since 2015. Prior to that, he had a 6 year run with ESPN LA, hosting his own weekday slot along with former Laker Mychal Thompson. Willard was also the host of the weekly show on ESPNLA.com, “The Forum.”

Jill Willard is the author of Intuitive Being, and has been featured on GOOP, Women’s Health Online, Mindbodygreen, and TedX. Her newest venture, IM, offers tools and tips on meditation and being here in presence.

Jill has been an Intuitive all her life. She came forward with her stunning gift to help open, support, and teach intuition. Her work helps explain the chakras, or energy centers that when balanced, are key to health, vitality, and peace.

She and Mark live in Mill Valley, California with their three children Abe, 13, Ella, 11, and Jude, 6.

          • 055: Chivona Newsome — Black Lives Matter - What You Should Know and How To Support

We, as a global community, are reeling after witnessing the devastating events that have been going on in the US justice system with the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other black citizens who died at the hands of police officers in the past decade. Institutional racism is still prevalent in our country today and black Americans have been targeted, stereotyped, and killed without just cause for generations. Enough is enough.

On today’s episode, we are going to discuss how racism impacts our society, how we can educate ourselves through literature and resources, where to donate, how to support black-owned businesses, and get involved with the cause.

Today I am joined by Chivona Renee Newsome.

Chivona is the Co-Founder of Black Lives Matter Greater NY, a civil rights leader at the forefront of the New Civil Rights Movement and former Financial Advisor at New York Life. She has dedicated her adult life to the betterment of her community & our nation as a whole.

Her parents actually met at a civil rights rally in the 1960’s, so you can say that she was born into this fight. The Bronx native was raised in a devout Christian household. As a youth, Chivona’s father became very ill and she became his advocate, learning early on how to negotiate for health care with insurance companies and the local pharmacy.

She attended pre-K through college in the New York’s Congressional District 15th. The one year she chose to study out of state at the prestigious Howard University in Washington, DC., her political action was noticed by then Senator Barack Obama’s campaign staff, and she was asked to be a part of the 2008 Presidential Inaugural Committee.

As a financial advisor, Chivona served her community. She worked on the $50 Billion Dollar challenge which created college savings, retirement plans, and generational wealth for over 300 black and brown residents of New York. Since then she has engaged in protests and activities to combat financial injustice.

Over the past few years, Chivona has worked tirelessly leading protests and seeking justice for the families of police brutality, she works with members of LGBT community, victims of human trafficking, the mental health community, women’s reproductive rights organizations, and housing justice advocates. She co-founded Black Lives Caucus, lectured students and expanded Black Lives Matter Greater NY to multiple New York City charter schools. She is also the producer of Black Lives Matter with Chivona on WBAI 99.5 fm. She is currently running for Congress to represent New York’s 15th Congressional District. The primary is on June 23, 2020.

          • 054: CeJai Taylor and Chase Moore — Raising Black Children to Dream Big

“God could not be everywhere, so he created Mothers.” This adage could not ring more true when it comes to the life of C.J. Taylor. Her life story could be made into an Oscar-winning biopic, and believe me, it’s just a matter of time.

She is a divorced single mom of three, an attorney, and a football coach with over 20 years of experience - she is the first female coach in the Snoop Dogg’s youth football league, is the Former Director of Football Operations and Assistant Coach at Los Angeles Southwest College, and was an the Junior Varsity HEAD COACH and Assistant Coach on Varsity at Verbum Dei High School, a private all boys school in southern California. She has generated more than 45 millions dollars, sending hundreds of student-athletes to college on scholarships with over 300 NCAA programs including with Marist College, Univ. of Texas, TCU, Vanderbilt, FAMU, LSU, CAL, Boise State, USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Syracuse and more.

She has single handedly raised three tremendously successful children: her daughter Mi-Calynn is a California State Licensed Nurse who is on the front line during the COVID pandemic. Caylin is a 2017 Rhodes Scholar, 2014 Fulbright Scholar, D-1 Student-Athlete and graduate of Texas Christian University, 2019 graduate of Oxford University, a current PhD candidate, and author of the NY Times bestselling memoir, A Dream Too Big. Last but not least Chase Moore, an Archer Fellow, Children’s Defense Fund recipient, and a recent D1Student-Athlete at the University of Texas at Austin victor of the 2019 Sugar Bowl, and member of the AFCA Allstate Good Works Team.

Though the family has witnessed many glory days, life has not been easy.

As written in an ESPN profile by Senior Writer Adam Rittenberg, CJ shares,

"We used to have a five-bath, four-bedroom house and seven vehicles. We had what looked like the Cosby life. It was like a Monet: From a distance, it looked beautiful, but up close, it was all messed up."

Inside those walls, C.J.'s now ex-husband, Louis Moore, was psychologically abusive toward her. She twice saw him physically abuse Caylin, who was just 2 at the time. In 2000, she left him, taking the children to live with her mother in Carson, on the border of Compton. She filed for divorce but still feared for their safety.

She always told her kids: “We may live in the hood, but the hood doesn’t live in us.” In 2004, she went to the hospital for heart surgery and came back in even worse shape. She was assaulted while being sedated, and later slipped into a depression. In 2009, her ex-husband was convicted of murder. He had a drunken argument with his girlfriend and fatally shot her with a rifle.

After weeks of her kids feeding her and bathing her, her middle child told her, “Get up, Mom. You’ve got to live. You’ve got three kids. We need you!”

That’s exactly what she did and she continues to give every bit of her soul to her children every single day.

Today, I am honored to welcome CJ Taylor and her youngest son Chase Moore to the show.

              • 053: Eve Rodsky — Playing Fair As You Raise Your Kids

Eve Rodsky is working to change society one marriage at a time with a new 21st century solution to an age-old problem: women shouldering the brunt of childrearing and domestic life responsibilities regardless of whether they work outside the home.

In her New York Times bestselling book Fair Play: A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much to Do (and More Life to Live), she uses her Harvard Law School training and years of organizational management experience to create a gamified life-management system to help couples rebalance all of the work it takes to run a home and allow them to reimagine their relationship, time and purpose.

Eve Rodsky received her B.A. in economics and anthropology from the University of Michigan, and her J.D. from Harvard Law School. After working in foundation management at J.P. Morgan, she founded the Philanthropy Advisory Group to advise high-net worth families and charitable foundations on best practices for harmonious operations, governance and disposition of funds. In her work with hundreds of families over a decade, she realized that her expertise in family mediation, strategy, and organizational management could be applied to a problem closer to home – a system for couples seeking balance, efficiency, and peace in their home. Rodsky was born and raised by a single mom in New York City and now lives in Los Angeles with her husband Seth and their three children.
