  • The QueXopa/REalyse Episode

In another double episode we have two alternative data providers that each focus on a specific geography.

First up is Eric Nunlee of QueXopa, a company that originated in Panama and has grown to be the pre-eminent provider of financial transaction data for the Latin America region.

Second is Gavriel Merkado of REalyse. As its primary offering REalyse provides all the information a UK real estate developer might need before investing in a property, and the company is increasingly making this information available to the financial markets in the form of Alternative Data.

  • The BMLL Technologies Episode

In this episode I’m joined by William L’Heveder, COO of BMLL Technologies.

BMLL Technologies is a sophisticated data provider which sits at the cutting edge of the financial markets. The company’s proprietary systems allow it to condense vast quantities of trading data into much more manageable formats, which can then be used by hedge funds, asset managers and even stock exchanges themselves to improve their internal processes and try to find a new edge in the highly sophisticated, dog-eat-dog world of securities trading.

For anyone interested in learning more about this type of trading, I would highly recommend a new book - The Man Who Solved the Market, by Gregory Zuckerman.

In this two-part episode I speak to two different alternative data providers.

First up its Ed Dean of Woodseer, a London-based company which gives its clients an investing edge with accurate dividend forecasting.

In the second half I speak to Luke Kennedy of Fable Data, one of the first credit card transaction data companies to tackle the European market.

  • The RIWI Episode

In today’s episode I speak to Neil Seeman of RIWI. RIWI is an innovative company born out of the University of Toronto which uses a unique method to gather actionable opinion data from the global population.

RIWI’s system, which involves taking advantage of nuances in the world wide web’s plumbing, not only gives it unusual access to populations in hard-to-reach geographies like China, but also randomizes its respondents in a way that avoids some of the traps that can be seen in today’s more traditional polling industry.

More information about the company can be found at www.riwi.com.

  • The Advan Research Episode

In this episode I’m joined by Yiannis Tsiounis, CEO and founder of Advan Research, a location data company which recently won Best Alternative Data Provider at the IMD & IRD Awards.

Among other things, Yiannis tells me about how Advan has found that employee mobility can correlate closely with a company’s performance, and how Advan’s Miles Driven Index is useful for the auto, oil and insurance industries.

  • The Unacast Episode

In this episode I’m joined by Thomas Walle, who is the CEO and co-founder of Unacast, a leading location data company based out of New York and Oslo.

As a location data company with a major European presence, Unacast is particularly aware of the new GDPR privacy regulations in Europe, and Thomas and I spoke about the challenges involved in trying to change consumer attitudes towards personal data and how it can be used for positive reasons.

  • The Thinknum Episode

In this episode I’m joined by Gregory Ugwi, who is the co-founder and CEO of Thinknum, one of the more established players in the Alternative Data world.

Thinknum is a web-scraper, and it serves as a conduit for investors and corporates who are interested in exploring all the information that you can find about a company on the internet.

This includes data like job postings, employee and customer reviews, and pricing information, amongst a wealth of other possibilities.

  • What is Alternative Data?

2020 has been the year of Alternative Data.

As Covid-19 caused unprecedented changes to sweep the global economy, investors and analysts have sought new ways to get a real-time picture on the effects the virus was leaving in its wake. Meanwhile, technological advances in big data and machine learning have provided new sources from which to gain a day-to-day understanding of these seismic changes. The fast-growing sector of Alternative Data has been the result.

In the first episode of The Alternative Data Podcast we introduce the concepts behind Alternative Data and explore the current lay of the land in this emerging sector.

I am joined by Saeed Amen, the co-author of The Book of Alternative Data - a comprehensive introduction to the sector, which was released earlier this year.
