It was not only thought provoking once I started thinking about it, though possibly even more interesting was the answers that my father-in-law gave and the comparison with the ideas behind "would you rather be the head of a mouse or tail of a lion?"

We can likely fix all of our problems once we start getting creative with possible solutions. It is easy to say I don't have the money or the time or the connections etc, though really what you are saying is I'm not resourceful enough to figure out a solution to the situation at hand. Next time you catch yourself saying I can't, stop and think for a moment of maybe how you can.
