In Part 16 of our verse-by-verse Hebrews study, we step into the “Hall of Faith” in Hebrews 11. The writer has just warned his readers not to drift, harden, fall away, or shrink back — now he shows them what persevering faith looks like. We’ll see how Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Israel at the Red Sea, Rahab, the judges, the prophets — even the unnamed, persecuted saints “of whom the world was not worthy” — were all trusting the same God we trust today. There are just some common, persistent Hebrew Roots claims—I would even call them “biblical myths,” because they’re so clearly untrue, yet they’re continually repeated and still believed. In this video, we explore and debunk four such claims made by Hebrew Roots (Torah-observant) teachers—claims that often lead believers into confusion and division. I've had a chance to reflect on my recent debate with Melissa Smith, who goes by “God’s Little Hummingbird.” I suppose it was successful in the sense that I was able to get Melissa to admit publicly some of her more extreme beliefs about the Bible in a way that I think most folks hadn’t heard before. For example, how she doesn’t believe that the New Testament has the same level of authority as the Old Testament, and how Paul’s letters are just letters. So, if you truly care about rightly understanding Scripture and about following Jesus in a biblical way, Melissa teaches some dangerous stuff. I’d stay far away from the teachings of God’s Little Hummingbird.

Our ministry is called to —as Titus 1:9 says—hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, encourage others by sound doctrine, and refute those who oppose it. That’s why we do what we do. In this episode, I share a few personal reflections, and then we dive into 5 of the many issues that Melissa and I discussed and debated. And these 5 in particular reveal the dangerous flaws in Melissa’s theology that we all need to be aware of.

Professor R. L. Solberg participated in a livestreamed debate with Torah teacher Melissa Schilling Smith (aka God's Little Hummingbird) on How the Sinai Law Applies to Followers of Jesus. The discussion was moderated by Melissa's friend, Scott Harwell, who also hosted the debate on his YouTube channel. 

Both agree that salvation is by grace through faith alone, but they differ on what obedience looks like under the New Covenant. The conversation covers the meaning of “new” in Jeremiah 31, whether the Sinai Covenant is still in effect, the role of the Holy Spirit in writing God’s law on the heart, the purpose of the feasts and Sabbaths, dietary laws, and how to understand passages like Colossians 2 and Hebrews 8. Along the way, they also touch on eschatology, the Gospel of the Kingdom, and the unity of Jew and Gentile in God’s plan. This is a deep dive into Scripture, theology, and the continuity (or discontinuity) between the Old and New Covenants.
