  • Bittersweet Moment #53: Roman Easter in the Time of Coronavirus

Rome is the center of the Catholic world, the home the pope, the city of St. Peter. Easter time draws enormous crowds of faithful to participate in the high holiday services and be blessed by the pope himself.

But this year, Easter is cancelled. Or almost. Easter services will still be performed in the Vatican and churches around the city, but unless you're a priest, an organist, or a deacon, you're not allowed to go.

What will Easter in Rome (and around most of the world) be like this year, since we are all stuck at home. Tiffany in Rome and Katy in Seattle ruminate on just that in this week's mini-episode.

  • Episode 310: A Day in the Life under Quarantine, Part 2

In the second part of this Day in the Life episode, Katy offers a rare glimpse into what it's like to edit and a long piece of tape, extracting its gems to transform it into something engaging.

Karen, a US expat in the Dolomites, cycles home from work, hoping not to be stopped by the Carabinieri, to Jill in Oregon spots a hummingbird and looks for the silver lining in the midst of chaos.

From Steve and Linda in Orvieto making homemade pizza to Simon from Melbourne as he walks his dog to Valentina in Trentino counting her blessings via social media. Lastly, take a peek into Katy and her husband Derek's craft night in Seattle.

We end this show with the song Six Feet Apart, sent in by Seattle artists Miles and Katrina, and inspired by the social isolation of the coronavirus pandemic.

  • Episode 309: A Day in the Life under Quarantine, Part 1

What does a day in the life of someone under lockdown look like? That's what we asked our listeners for today's episode, offering a peek into their lives throughout the course of a day as well as our own.

From Lynn in San Francisco as she studies Italian to Scott trying to find some space for himself in his basement, from Madeline in Menlo Park remembering to be thankful to best-selling author Jess Walter who is very used to working from home.

From Nancy in Wisconsin dealing with spring snowfall to Theresa in Port Townsend in a hailstorm to Jill in Manhattan, where the only sound on the city streets is the chirping of birds, and many, many others.

We got so many glimpses into the lives of our diverse listeners that we had to divide this episode into two parts. But don't fret—the second part of the episode will be released right after this one.

  • Bittersweet Moment #52: Shopping and Consumerism in the Time of Coronavirus

What happens when you CAN'T shop? When all the stores in your town are closed and your supermarket stops selling anything beyond the basic necessities? Even major online shops are running out of merchandise or have month-long waiting periods for delivery. What's an eager consumer to do?

And a perhaps more interesting question: is this a good thing? Of course no one wants the economy to collapse or people to lose their businesses or jobs, but could we all get used to not constantly buying stuff, and might that be a good thing? We discuss this and more on this week's mini-episode.

  • Bittersweet Moment #51: LOCKDOWN, Part 4

How are our daily lives changed due to quarantine and life during the coronavirus outbreak?

It seems like every day something changes: restrictions get tighter, a new epicenter emerges, and the new theories on the best way to conquer this crisis emerge.

It's hard to keep up, so we like to check in with you from time to time to let you know how we are faring—and hear from you as well. This week, we read a letter from a listener (and recent expat in Italy) who, despite the challenges, is finding the joy and beauty in life under lockdown.

  • Episode 307: REPORTING

When did a podcast about travel, living abroad, embracing adventure, and going off the script become about… staying home all day, every day?

Since coronavirus, that's when. The Bittersweet Life is certainly not the only media platform that is suddenly all about the spread of this virus and the quarantines around the world that it is necessitating.

So today we ask, what's it like to cover a major world-wide news story that changes and develops practically every day and blots out every other thing going on? How do you keep up with the story and find new ways of looking at it? And what happens when you, as a reporter, become part of the story? And what kind of people thrive in these situations?

We discuss this and more in our latest episode. In addition, Katy sits down with Patricia Murphy, an award-winning NPR reporter who covers justice and public health in Seattle, as well as one of Katy's former colleagues. Patricia just launched the NPR podcast Seattle Now, and has found herself dedicating the entire premise of the new show (so far) to the growing crisis.

Check out the Seattle Now podcast on their website or on Apple podcasts.

Find out more about Patricia Murphy here or follow her on Twitter.

  • Bittersweet Moment #50: LOCKDOWN, Part 3

Lockdown has hit the United States—at least in some parts of the country. And people all around the nation are choosing to self-isolate.

On this mini-episode, Katy and Tiffany discuss the realities of life under quarantine, including the practical things you need to do if you must leave your house.

They also wonder if self-isolation will make enough of a difference, or if a nationwide lawful quarantine is the only way to combat the spread of Coronavirus.

Tiffany also lays out Italy's grim numbers, which are about to eclipse even China's heart-wrenching statistics.

***More cheerful episodes starting next week, we promise!!***
