Featured prominently in one of Powell Peralta’s most iconic ads (1987’s “Some Girls Play With Dolls. Real Women Skate.”, which as of this recording is still being used by the company as a grip tape graphic) and game-changing videos (1988’s Public Domain), Anita’s skate career might have been cut short far too early, but as the first female street skater with a part in a major skate video, her contributions to skateboarding remain timeless and groundbreaking to this day. Tune in as we hear about Anita’s early days of skating in Oregon, getting sponsored, filming for Public Domain, riding for Powell while working at World Industries, and many more incredible tales. In addition, we’ll dip into an epic mailbag where some mind-blowing facts about the “Eight” video (check out our last episode) come to light. Welcome back to the show! This week, the BBAS crew are dipping their toes- ever so slightly- into skateboarding’s mythical “new school” era, with an in-depth review of Powell Peralta’s often overlooked 1991 video Eight! Times they were a-changin’ in the early nineties, and Eight truly marks the end of an era for Powell, with several key team riders either left out of the video entirely or showcasing their final parts with the company as new brands, trends, styles and attitudes began to overwhelm the skateboarding status quo at an alarming rate. Joining Larry and Matt in the studio to tackle this beast is none other than Brian Fair, dreadlocked and grammy-nominated vocalist for the legendary bands Shadows Fall and Overcast- and certified lifelong skate rat of the highest order.
