Ron Hextall, arguably the toughest goaltender in the history of the NHL, is certainly the most unpredictable. He made a career out of destroying guys with his stick and his fists, all while making highlight-reel saves en route to becoming one of the best goalies of his era. Don't let the psychotic antics fool you, yes he was an animal but he was also one hell of a goaltender. We cover all of our bases on this episode, from his fights, to be traded, to scoring goals. Yes, Hextall did score nearly as many goals as Cam did in his career. He was the first goalie to ever score in a regular-season game before becoming the first NHL goalie to ever score in a Stanley Cup playoff game. His ability to handle the puck is what separates him from the rest of the goalies who came along in the '80s and '90s. Before there was Martin Brodeur there was Ron Hextall. He never won a Stanley Cup as a player but he would eventually win as an assistant GM with the LA Kings in 2012. He eventually became General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, the same franchise where he became a legend as a player. How did it end? Not good, what happened? We tell you about this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Find us a bigger stud and wheel than former NHL'er Jarret Stoll. We're waiting.....How nice must it be to be Stoll? A two-time Stanley Cup winner who made his mark with the Los Angeles Kings. He scored some huge goals along the way too. Stoll is no different than any other player, he comes with a story and interesting background. A decent-sized phenom as a bantam hockey player, Stoll was the 1st player taken in the 1997 WHL draft. He'd go on to play nearly 900 games in the show. Outside of winning Cups with the Kings, Stoll is maybe best known for dating celebrities. From being engaged to Rachel Hunter to dating Paulina Gretzky to now being married to sports broadcaster Erin Andrews, Stoll isn't shy when it comes to finding his way on and off the ice. He's had some adversity too and yes he's asked about it. The reality is, he's always been one of the most popular players amongst his teammates and even when he's gotten himself in trouble it's usually because he's taking one for the team. The Kings always looked like they were having a good time, how close were they off the ice and how much partying did they do with Hollywood A-listers? Plus what everyone wants to know is, did the Kings players truly lock former Head Coach Darryl Sutter out of the dressing room? Jarett Stoll, a cool ass dude and a really good hockey player on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Kevin Stevens, yes that Kevin Stevens. Two-time Stanley Cup winner, two-time 50 goal scorer, and an absolute legend in the 1990s with the Pittsburgh Penguins. As fast as his rise was as a player, Stevens fell just as hard. Arrests, drug addiction, and trips to rehab defined a good portion of his post-playing career. Until now. Stevens is clean and living a productive life, he may not have the millions of dollars he earned as an NHL superstar, but he has his health, he has his life. His bond with former teammates in Pittsburgh will never be broken. Teammates stick together through it all and there's no better example than what Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux has done for Kevin Stevens. Stevens is back working for the Pittsburgh Penguins and has restored his relationship with his family. This shouldn't be looked at as a sad story, this is a success story of a former NHL star who dealt with real-life problems before getting back on his feet. We bring you, Kevin Stevens, on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Another Hall of Famer joins Cam and Strick as Martin St. Louis shares his story of going undrafted before turning into one of the best offensive players of his generation. A former Hart Trophy winner as the league MVP St. Louis defied so many odds after being passed over by virtually every NHL team. Actually, the Calgary Flames signed him but still couldn't eye his superstar potential. He eventually landed in Tampa Bay where life changed in a hurry. Why was Tampa Bay the right fit? How was his relationship with John Tortorella, GM Steve Yzerman, and why did he really eventually ask to be traded? How did he really feel after being originally left off the Canadian Olympic roster in 2014 before eventually being added as a replacement? St. Louis had some amazing moments throughout his career including scoring on Mother's Day just days after his Mom passed away. A candid conversation with Martin St. Louis on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Scott Niedermayer, a true legend of the game, joined Cam and Strick for an exclusive interview never heard before. From growing up in British Columbia with an NHL brother, to contract disputes with the new Jersey Devils. Hear stories never been told before from one of the greatest defensemen of all time.
Brian Burke, full of truculence and all, joined the boys on the Cam and Strick Podcast. From playing for Lou Lamoriello at Providence College to getting death threats when working for the league, Burke has seen it all as a longtime NHL Executive. Always outspoken, always opinionated, Burke may be the only TV analyst not afraid to go against the grain and form unpopular opinions. At the end of the day it's his opinion and most of the time it's super entertaining. From working in Toronto to teaching Pavel Bure English, to representing Brett Hull, to trading for Chris Pronger you are sure to be glued to this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
This will definitely go down as one of the best episodes ever on the Cam and Strick Podcast. Where do we start with Sheldon Souray? He has an amazing story that almost didn't happen. After showing up out of shape for his first-ever NHL training camp, New Jersey GM and previous guest Lou Lamoriello sent him to Albany to chill in a hotel by himself. He went as far as to tell him if he ever did it again he'd never play in the NHL. Souray left crying as he drove away but eventually recovered. After a trade to Montreal Souray and his 100-plus MPH slapshot would become one of the top offensive defensemen in the league. The three-time All-Star, known for his shot, broke records with his ability to score on the power play. A Hollywood wife and a big-time contract led him to Edmonton where he'd continue to score but also deal with serious injuries and conflict with Oilers management. Souray is also known for dating and marrying some beautiful women. He himself is blessed with good looks and he didn't waste it. He lived the life in both New Jersey/NY and Montreal. Marrying a Baywatch actress then a WWE superstar Souray became a household name outside of hockey. His life would turn after becoming addicted to painkillers. Knowing he needed help and thinking about his late father, Souray would enter rehab where he'd end up meeting his most recent Fiance, who also happens to be a model. At the end of the day, this guy is a great person who seems happy and has his life under control. Rarely will you hear Souray open up in the fashion he does in this interview. A great player, Sheldon Souray is a great dude who has a message he hopes will help others who might find themselves in a similar situation he was in just a short time ago. Check out one of the most powerful interviews we've had on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Is there a better person in the history of the NHL than longtime Arizona Coyotes Captain Shane Doan? Seriously, there may be a few who were just as nice, but none nicer. Plus he walks the walk in his everyday life. What you see is what you get with Shane Doan. Plus he could play some hockey, over 1,500 NHL games played and over 400 goals throughout his career. Cam and Strick really wanted Doan on the podcast to find out exactly how he lives his life and what motivates him to be such a quality individual. How did he handle the everyday temptation that comes with being an NHL player? Did he try to convince his teammates to be like him? And why didn't he ever leave Arizona and go play for a contender? We make him laugh a lot, trust me when I say this is a Shane Doan interview you've never heard before. From life on his ranch to his friendship with Sen. John McCain, we discuss everything. He even prevented Cam from cursing. Check out Shane Doan on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Longtime NHL Head Coach Bruce Boudreau stopped by to talk to Cam and Strick. Right off the bat, you can hear his personality and his willingness to have fun with the boys. Boudreau has had an interesting life in the game, this guy put up unreal numbers as a player, primarily in the minors, where he ranks among the highest-scoring AHL players in their history. He also spent some time with both Toronto and Chicago in the NHL. Why didn't he have a longer NHL career? He tries his best to provide an answer. Boudreau touches on a number of topics including how he would handle the Tukka Rask situation, what about Allan Walsh's tweet, or the negativity surrounding Head Coaching tactics thanks to Bill, Peters, Marc Crawford, and Mike Babcock among others. How badly does Boudreau want to get back behind an NHL bench and where is his favorite place he's coached in the NHL? How hard is it to hear the criticism he's endured for not having playoff success? Who's the most impressive head coach in the game today? These questions and many more are discussed in this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
One of the most intimidating defensemen of his era, Derian Hatcher had no problem introducing himself even if it meant absolutely destroying you. Which he definitely had no problem doing. Give yourself 20 minutes and youtube this guy. The former Captain for the Dallas Stars won a Stanley Cup in 1999 in addition to being a cornerstone Dman for Team USA in a number of international tournaments. Hatcher would eventually move on from Dallas after signing a big-ticket with Detroit then finding his way to Philly where he looked natural in black and orange. Hatcher is now an owner/Head Coach of the Sarnia Sting in the OHL. How has he transitioned to coaching kids from this generation? Do parents actually call and complain even in the OHL? The short answer is yes they do. Derian Hatcher laughs, tells great stories including crushing Peter Sykora and Jeremy Roenick among others. Does he still have Roenick's teeth in his elbow after breaking his jaw? Find out this and much more on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
