NHL legend Chris Chelios joined Cam and Strick and in typical fashion was entertaining as hell. This guy has done it all in hockey, but as impressive as his hockey career was, this guy lived the life off the ice. He wasn't only friends with rockstars, he is a rockstar. He owns a boat as well which got the boys slightly excited. We dig into a bunch of stuff with the tannest player in NHL history. From hanging with celebs in Malibu to his feelings towards Mike Babcock, to his broadcasting stint with ESPN, Chris Chelios offers up an interview you've never heard from him before.
When you hear the name John Scott what's the first thought that comes to mind? Is it the fact he forced the NHL to scramble so badly to keep him out of the All-Star game they offered him money to stay away? It didn't work and not only did Scott show up to the 2016 NHL All-Star game in Nashville, he took home the MVP, $90,000 and a brand new Honda Pilot. He's currently selling the Pilot by the way. It's an amazing story that you have to hear it straight from him to fully understand. Scott also has a great story as a player and how he developed into one of the top enforcers in the league. His experience being roommates with the late Derek Boogaard and how the trade from Arizona to Montreal went down. The story of how the NHL tried to keep him out of the All-Star game after winning the fan vote is an amazing story to hear, check it out here on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast. Oh, and he has an engineering degree from Michigan Tech University.
They don't produce a ton of hockey talent out of Vermont, but when they do....look out! John LeClair, one of the most lethal goal scorers of his era drops by the Cam and Strick Podcast to talk about his incredible career in the game. From winning a Stanley Cup in Montreal to helping form the "Legion of Doom" in Philly, LeClair is one of a handful of players to score at least 50 goals in three consecutive seasons. He along with Eric Lindros and Mikael Renberg formed one of the most famous lines in hockey history with the Flyers. From Pat Burns to Jacques Demers, to Ken Hitchcock, Leclair played for some great coaches in addition to having some Hall of Fame teammates. What were his impressions of these guys? You might be surprised what he had to say. Plus his thoughts on playing with a young Sidney Crosby in addition to Lindros who he has mad respect for. How did they handle a young mouthy Crosby? What did he think of the Scott Stevens hit on Lindros and how did that hit impact the Flyers potential of creating a dynasty? Not to mention he's an American hero who helped USA hockey take a giant leap in international play. Lohn LeClair, he doesn't say much but when he does people listen. Check him out on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Few goaltenders have burst onto the NHL scene quite like Sean Burke did in 1988. After a strong showing for Canada at the Olympics, Burke looked like he would be the goalie of the future for Lou Lamoriello and the New Jersey Devils. It didn't play out that way but still didn't keep Burke from moving on and becoming a three-time NHL All-Star. He played 18 seasons in the NHL, represented Canada twice at the Olympics, and finished his career with over 300 wins. He also battled with head coaches Mike Keenan and John Tortorella which has become a trend for our guests on the Cam and Strick Podcast. He held out an entire season, turning down a long-term contract from the Devils. Burke fought a lot, what's more, impressive than a goalie who has had more career scraps than most players? He still has aspirations to be an NHL GM one day and has held just about every position possible since retiring from the game including Assistant GM of the Arizona Coyotes. Burke took a break from playing guitar and renovating his house to join us on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Gino Odjick may come across like an absolute psycho on the ice, but he's one of the most popular players amongst his teammates to ever play in the NHL. Known for his toughness and willingness to literally go toe-to-toe with anybody, Odjick was an example for many people who grew up on the Native Reserve just like he did. Overcoming the odds and making it to the NHL is a story in and of itself, lasting as long as he did is nearly a miracle. This guy had a great career anyone, no matter where you come from, any player can be proud of. He's without question the most popular enforcer to ever play for the Vancouver Canucks, but he was more than just a fighter. He was the ultimate protector for his teammates, specifically Hall of Famer Pavel Bure. You touch Pavel Bure, you might as well leave the game because he's coming. And if he doesn't catch you this game, he won't forget when you meet up again the next time. His story is as good as any player we've had on the Cam and Strick Podcast. What was it like growing up on the Reserve, overcoming an illness that was supposed to be terminal, and creating some of the greatest and most entertaining highlights in hockey history? Plus his adventure travelling to Russia and tracking down Bure, without a cell phone. He even calls out Mark Messier in an unexpected turn of events! Tune in, a conversation for the ages with Gino Ogjick on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Captain Canada joins Cam and Andy on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast. What a career Ryan Smyth had, an Edmonton Oilers All-Star who transitioned into a Canadian Icon after appearing in seven consecutive World Championships. This is in addition to representing his country in the World Junior Championships, the World Cup, and twice in the Olympics. He even played in the Spengler Cup. How much does Smyth love the game of Hockey? After playing over 1200 NHL games he played Senior hockey which led to a visit to the hospital after being taken down by an elbow to the head. What does he think of the guy who took him out? While that proved to not be a very good idea, it's hard to criticize the rest of his career. During his prime, he was considered among the top power forwards in the game and the face of the Oilers franchise. Smyth is now living his best life in Nashville, Tennessee of all places. Living on eight acres, he and his wife have four kids and are loving retirement life. So much to get into with Ryan Smyth, from almost becoming a Detroit Red Wing, his relationship with Mike Babcock, to why he was so emotionally attached to the city of Edmonton. Check out Ryan Smyth on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Keep your head up and your stick on the ice. Good advice for any hockey player, especially when the most dangerous, devastating hitter in the history of the NHL is on the ice. Scott Stevens wouldn't just bump you off the puck, he'd absolutely destroy you, as in leave you lying motionless on the ice. If you don't believe us, google his name. Stevens is known for his hits on Eric Lindros and Paul Kariya among others, but he could flat out play and was among the best Captains the game has ever seen. Plus he's a winner winning three Stanley Cups, a Memorial Cup, a Canada Cup among many of his honors. The only thing missing is a Norris Trophy, don't worry we ask him about it. We also ask him about his contract situation with St. Louis. Was he happy an arbitrator sent him packing to New Jersey? Just a hint, he wasn't happy. He also played over 600 games with the Washington Capitals which most people probably forgot. What was his workout routine? Did he ever think he killed someone on the ice? And what is his response to Tie Domi's comments he made about Stevens on this very podcast? Check this out, the highly anticipated interview with Hall of Famer Scott Stevens on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Allan Walsh, one of the most respected, and at times controversial agents in the hockey business. If he isn't controversial, at the very least he's super opinionated. Which is why we wanted him on the Cam and Strick Podcast. Walsh has a no holds bar approach to representing his clients. You cross him or one of his players, expected to be dealt with. Walsh doesn't hesitate to call you out publicly. He isn't afraid to take on Commissioner Gary Bettman, former NHL All-Star Jeremy Roenick, Boston Bruins announcer Jack Edwards, or anyone else who delivers an opinion or news that he disagrees with. Walsh puts himself out there so it's obvious he doesn't mind the attention, as good or as bad as that might be. He believes what he stands for and for that you can't help but respect his willingness to defend his clients or the NHLPA. He also has an interesting story. A former prosecutor in southern California Walsh at one time chased down some of the most dangerous criminals and gang members in Los Angeles. How did he transition his life into becoming an NHL player agent? He tells us in the longest answer ever given in hockey podcast history. Be patient, enjoy a unique story by one of the more interesting individuals in hockey. Everything is addressed in this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Maybe the most underrated warrior and Captain of his era is Michael Peca. The two-time Selke Award winner also has two Stanley Cup final appearances on his resume. He also won an Olympic gold medal in 2002 representing his native Canada. This guy has one of the most underrated stories you’ll ever hear. Known for absolutely destroying guys with open-ice hits, Peca would back it up if he needed to. He also held out an entire season due to a contract dispute with the Buffalo Sabres. How many players have the balls to do that? Who remembers Darcy Tucker catching him and knocking him out of the playoffs with a torn ACL? Does he hold a grudge? Find out this and much more on this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
Get ready for one of the best episodes we've had to date on the Cam and Strick Podcast. Shayne Corson, not only does he have the coolest spelling of the name Shayne, this guy was an absolute warrior. Corson played hard on the ice and apparently went almost as hard off of it. You'd never know it though, this guy brought it every night and was a player you wanted on your side. His former teammates absolutely rave about this guy. An NHL veteran of 1156 career games, Corson was the Captain of two NHL franchises. He could bury you with a hit then go out and score a goal on the same shift. He'd also go toe-to-toe with some of the toughest to ever play in the league. We dive into all of that and then some in this episode. From playing in Canada Cups to being teammates with Wayne Gretzky to overcoming serious personal adversity. Corson saw just about everything over the course of his career. How was he able to overcome some of his personal issues? No stone was left unturned in this edition of the Cam and Strick Podcast.
