Last week on the program, guest Mike Gendron joined us to discuss the topic, Remembering the Reformation and the War Against It Today. Mike explained why the Reformation was necessary (because the Roman Catholic Church had so departed from the faith and doctrines of the first century church) and what the Reformation accomplished, including the Word of God recovered as supreme authority, Christ as head of His church, and all-important doctrines such as justification by God’s grace alone through faith alone apart from human merit.

This week, as we approach the anniversary of Reformation Day, October 31, 1517, the date when German monk Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany to protest the errant doctrines and abuses of the dominant Roman Catholic Church and which ignited a 130-year period of “reform” that forever altered the Christian faith and the Western Civilization, we will continue our focus on the Reformation by discussing “How the Church Needs Reformation Today”

Joel Beeke, pastor of Heritage Reformed Congregation (Grand Rapids, MI), founder of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, and chairman of Reformation Heritage Books, will join us to explain how the church and Christians individually should apply truths recovered in the Reformation to preaching and living.

Guest: Mike Gendron, Founder and Director, Proclaiming the Gospel

It says something very destructive about the trajectory of our nation that October 31 is overwhelmingly celebrated as Halloween, a “holy-day” that features the dark supernatural world of evil spirits, death, and paganism.

A far more righteous and momentous event occurred on the same date in the year 1517 when a monk named Martin Luther nailed a document known as the 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany, protesting errant doctrines of the predominant Roman Catholic Church. Luther’s protest ignited the Reformation, which led to the recovery of key doctrines of the faith such as justification by God’s grace through faith and started a new branch of Christianity called Protestantism.

The impact of the Reformation went far beyond ecclesiastical matters into the civil sphere. European nations, such as Britain, Scotland, Switzerland, Netherlands, and Scandinavia, became Protestant, and generations later as descendants migrated to America, beliefs and practices from the Reformation shaped the founding documents and culture of our nation.

Mike Gendron, founder and director of Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries and a former Roman Catholic for 35 years, is our guest this weekend on The Christian Worldview. God created the universe and every living thing. There is no being greater than God and thus He is sovereign over all, which definitionally means “possessing supreme or ultimate power.”

A post online summed up in part the current situation in America and abroad:

“Major U.S. ports are closed due to striking longshoremen. Hundreds of Americans missing in a natural disaster. ICE says there are over 600k mid-high level criminals in our midst. War breaking out in the Middle East. And Kamala Harris wants a promotion.”

It would seem with the troubled condition of America, adding to the list high prices and inflation, unaffordable housing, rampant crime, millions of illegal immigrants being dropped all over the country, poor public education and much more, that there would be no way Americas would give Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, that promotion on election day, Tuesday, Nov. 5.

But alas, the polls, if one can trust the polls, have the race between Harris and Trump very close.

It’s helpful in these times to hear from someone with a wide breadth of historical experience along with a Christian worldview. That would be Cal Thomas, 81-years-old and one of America’s leading journalists over his 50+ year career. Cal has been up-close and lived through many national and international events and crises along with presidential elections.

On Thursday, September 19, a statement was released from Trinity Bible Church in Dallas announcing that their pastor, “Steven J. Lawson has been removed indefinitely from all ministry activities at Trinity Bible Church of Dallas. Several days ago, the elders at Trinity Bible Church of Dallas were informed by Steve Lawson of an inappropriate relationship that he has had with a woman.”

The shocks of this earthquake were immediately felt throughout the Evangelical Christian world. How could the 73-year-old popular and influential theologically conservative pastor/preacher who had been in ministry for nearly 50 years, who preached at the biggest conferences around the world, who was “a preacher to aspiring preachers”, who had written dozens of books on Christian doctrine, history, and practice, fall into this kind of disqualifying sin?

Surely, the best of preachers, one who fastidiously studied and accurately preached the Word with such passion and conviction, he must surely be sanctified beyond this?

Someone once said, “The best of men are men at best.” Or Scripture puts it even better, “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). 

That means all men and women. Great preachers and you and me.

We will discuss this tragic news this weekend on The Christian Worldview, not in any way to judge a man, but so that all of us would “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

Proverbs 28:2 in the The New Living Translation reads this way: “When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topples easily. But wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability.”

Well, that’s certainly descriptive of our nation.

• Over 60 million abortions of unborn human beings
• Celebration of sexual immorality, whether heterosexual, homosexual, or transgender
• Redefining God-designed one-man one-woman marriage and the male-female fixed binary
• Multi-billion dollar pornography industry

There’s more to the “moral rot” than this—economic policies that disincentivize work and reward sinful behavior, legalization of recreational drugs, disinformation from government, no or low consequences for criminals. And the list goes on.

It should be stated that Proverbs are general principles and not guarantees. Moral rot within a nation doesn’t always topple the government but sometimes it does. The Roman Empire was marked by moral rot and it collapsed, despite a large geographic scale of rule, military might, educational advancement, and economic prosperity.

It’s the second part of this Proverb that is up for discussion—“wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability”. We have moral rot but do we have “wise and knowledgeable leaders” to bring stability?

In part 1 last week, guest Dr. James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries, explained the Romans 1 tidal wave in how America has gone from revering God and His Word to rejecting and detesting Him.

This week in part 2, James will explain why an explosion of sexual sin results from suppressing God truth and exchanging it for a lie. We will also discuss whether a Donald Trump victory would change the trajectory of this nation.

In the opening chapter of the apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans, he describes God-rejecting mankind, who “suppress the truth in unrighteousness”, whose “foolish hearts were darkened”, who “exchanged the truth of God for the lie”, and worship themselves and their pleasures rather than the Creator.

God’s judgment on these rebels is the wrath of abandonment, where God “gives them over” to plunge deeper into sin. When this occurs, wickedness explodes—heterosexual immorality becomes homosexuality immorality becomes a “depraved mind” which takes delight in and gives “hearty approval” to all manner of iniquity.

The United States of America, though founded with Christian values, has descended over the decades into a Romans 1 society. What God established—marriage, morality, gender, truth, life—is now vehemently rejected. And as we near a pivotal election, half or more of the electorate will vote for the Democratic Party, the loud and proud leaders of Romans 1, to normalize and expand their sinful “freedoms”.

The Republican Party, on the other hand, is trailing a decade or two behind. Who would have thought that the GOP would abandon its former commitment to protect unborn humans in the womb? Who would think they would give up the fight for the family and go silent on unnatural “marriages” and child-rearing?

But moving left is what has happened on these and other issues, such as illegal immigration, spending, and globalism. Donald Trump has led the Republican Party since becoming president in 2016. Now running for reelection in 2024, he has sniffed the wind in the country and concluded that to get elected, he needs to give our Romans 1 nation more of what it wants.

And yet the alternative to Trump in our only-two-viable-parties system is Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, who advocate for the ungodly and un-American ideology of Marxism. So what are Biblical Christians to think and do in this election and going forward?

James White is the director of Alpha and Omega Ministries, a decades-old apologetic ministry based in Phoenix AZ and the host of the popular podcast called The Dividing Line. It’s been an unprecedented ascent for Kamala Harris to be the Democratic nominee for president. She dropped out early in the 2020 Democratic primary due to low poll numbers but was then chosen by Joe Biden to be his running mate after he promised to select a woman.

And then late in her unremarkable term as vice president, Harris was chosen to be the party’s nominee for president after Biden was forced out of the race due to cognitive decline.

Aside from delegates at the recent Democrat National Convention, no one has directly voted for Kamala Harris to be nominee for president. No matter—half of the electorate are fully enthused at the prospect of “making history with the country’s first black, female president”.

Never mind that she was considered the most leftist member when she was a U.S. Senator from California. Never mind that she fully supports the killing of unborn babies all the way up to the time of birth. In fact, Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz are the highest ranking government officials to visit an abortion center.

And she checks all the rest of the left’s boxes—homosexual/transgender advocacy, illegal immigration, redistributive economic policies, pro-Palestine, and more.

So how it is possible in a nation built on Christian values with individual liberties that a candidate who opposes that may very well be our next president?

There is no more important issue and pursuit than worshipping God. It’s more important than who will be our next president, more important than world peace, more important than your health, financial security, and whatever else we treasure.

Scripture makes the primacy of worship clear:  King David prayed, “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all” (1 Chronicles 29:11).

Paul wrote, “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor 10:31).

King Solomon exhorted, “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear [reverence, awe] God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person” (Ecclesiastes 12:13)

Psalms, the songbook of the Bible, closes this way: “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 150:6)

God created man as a worshipful being. We can see this because everyone worships someone or something. If God isn’t worshipped, a false god will be substituted—person, pleasure, possession, position, popularity, power, to name just a few.

God, as Creator, Sustainer, Savior, and Sovereign over all, deserves our worship. Our peace, purpose, and pleasure in life is directly proportional to how rightly and authentically we worship the Creator.

Our guest this weekend is Scott Aniol, Executive VP and Editor-in-Chief G3 Ministries. G3, which stands for “Gospel—Grace—Glory”, is a Christian organization that aims to strengthen the local church through conferences, resources, online articles, podcasts, expository preaching workshops, biblical worship workshops, and local church-based curriculum for Sunday school and small groups.” Their next major conference is Oct. 3-5 in Oklahoma on the issue of Cessationism and whether the miraculous sign gifts are for today?

Scott Aniol will join us to discuss “The Primacy of Worship”. He explains in a five-part column series corresponding to each of the “five solas” of the Reformation that worship is even more important than salvation, for salvation is the entry point to proper worship of God.

This program aims to be a helpful for individual Christians and also the church, for worship includes but is far more encompassing than music alone.

And since it’s election season with the Democratic National Convention having just concluded in Chicago, we will discuss what is being worshipped by both parties and how to think about voting for imperfect candidates.
