James chokes on the anniversary cake but we forge ahead with a look at buying an lower-priced EV in 2022. Solar as building envelope, UK EVs lowering emissions now, and bikes that break.

Thanks to Regina Car Share for the balloon and cake.

We begin by assessing some of the progress on climate tech in the last two years including how EV sales are soaring as a percentage of new vehicle sales.

Tesla stock has gone up 9x since our first podcast two years ago.

James needs to buy an EV and can't find one in his price range. Even the used car market has gone bananas.

A new building in Toronto will be the largest solar generating wall structure ever.

Electric Cars Help Cut UK Transportation Emissions By 11.2%.

Vermont gas utility is actually helping their customers get rid of gas water heaters by making a business out of renting heat pump water heaters.

EV charging stations will soon outnuber gas stations in the U.S.

  • 99. The Madness of Elon Musk

Telsa's Elon Musk is concentrating on humanoid robots and Canadian truckers. Is he losing his way? Plus Big Oil is screwing us on orphan wells but lookout for lawsuits from environmentalists paving the way to cleaner future.

After a winter blizzard hits the home city of this podast, James learns two things: 1. Siding comes off houses easily and 2. Gas cars are dangerous when you're stuck in a snow drift. Not true for electric cars.

Brian researches an 1920s story of light bulb companies colluding to make their bulbs only last 1000 hours.

A local EV buyer was surprised at range loss in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 even though it's not that bad. He also says the sales person knew nothing about electric vehicles behond that they have four wheels.

Elon Musk Cray or Slay: humanoid robot obsession and unpopular political opinions. Will Elon stop believing in climate change one day soon and if so, what will that mean for the planet?

Tennis Australia announced that it had ended a sponsorship arrangement with oil and gas company Santos early. The sponsorship deal covered Santos’ logo being featured in on-court signage at both the ATP Cup and Australian Open and was supposed to run across multiple years starting at the 2021 Australian Open.

    Ford Escape room game.

A federal judge on Thursday canceled oil and gas leases of more than 80 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico, ruling that the Biden administration did not sufficiently take climate change into account when it auctioned the leases late last year.

The decision by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia is a major victory for environmental groups that criticized the Biden administration for holding the sale after promising to move the country away from fossil fuels. It had been the largest lease sale in United States history.

Now the Interior Department must conduct a new environmental analysis that accounts for the greenhouse gas emissions that would result from the eventual development and production of the leases. After that, the agency will have to decide whether it will hold a new auction.

The Canadian Press is reporting that the Cost of cleaning up Orphaned oil wells in Canada, mostly Alberta and Saskatchewan, will be a billion dollars by 2025, but that figure doesn’t include many costs, so it’s likely much more than that. There’s already 10,000 orphan wells, and another 7,400 that are abandoned but not yet considered orphaned. The billion dollar figure doesn’t include other infrastructure like pipelines, or the oil sands.

Elektrek is reporting that electric bikes are now outselling electric cars and plug-in hybrids in the US.

According to data released by the LEVA, the US saw nearly 790,000 electric bike imports in 2021. That marks a 70% increase from the 463,000 imports in 2020. Also in 2021, Americans purchased 652,000 electric cars and plug-in hybrids, according to BloombergNEF.

TeslaTimeNews gets critical of Tesla over its handling of the heat pump issue our friends have experienced this year in Canada.

From The Guardian, “The body responsible for managing renewable energy payments, the Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC), has forecast paybacks from the industry could increase to a total of £770m by the end of winter, shaving an average of £27 from the annual home energy bill. But customers might have been in line for multibillion pound paybacks worth about £140 for a typical annual energy bill if the UK’s renewable energy rollout had taken place sooner, according to the industry”

Incandescent, Inefficient Light Bulbs Live On at the Nation’s Dollar Stores Thanks to a Trump administration weakening of climate rules  not only were LED bulbs less available in poorer areas, they also tended to cost on average $2.50 more per bulb than in wealthier communities.

    Boycott Phillips bulbs!

The Guardian: The University Park neighborhood of Los Angeles has a lot in common with urban areas across the US: a dense population with lots of businesses and housing. A cluster of car dealerships. A row of restaurants. Schools and a community center.

But nestled in the predominantly Latino community is something rarely found in urban areas outside California: an oil field. These are set to go away...finally!

  • 97. The Elon Musk of India is Killing Gas Consumption

How the 'Elon Musk' of India is changing the world by offering millions of low cost two-wheel EVs to displace gas. British Petroleum says it can make money charging your EV at its gas stations. Do PHEVs pollute more than claimed? Plus, wind is really, seriously, taking off at this very moment.

Chevrolet will give you a window film sticker once they have replaced your fire-prone car battery. It has a QR code so parking lot attendants can scan it and confirm the battery is fixed.

James takes a deep dive into Ola Scooters, the 1000$ family transport scooter, made in India at a megafactory. 115k max speed, 180 km range. Almost half of registered vehicles in India are two-wheelers. Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO of Ola, has a mission for the planet and it's bold!

BP says their EV chargers are soon to be more profitable than gas pumps.

Tesla has a software fix for their heat pump problems in cold weather, but it’s not clear yet if a hardware fix is needed for some or all cars. Temp dropping tonight so perhaps we will find out.

A new study….on fuel consumption by plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) found little in the way of benefits.

“These vehicles do not permit any environmental improvement,” energy engineer Marc Muller, one of the authors of the study, told RTS radio. “It’s a climate target con, and it’s a consumer con.”

New York State finalizes the terms under which Equinor and BP will provide generation capacity of 1,260 megawatts (MW) of renewable offshore wind power from Empire Wind 2, and another 1,230 MW of power from Beacon Wind 1, while making substantial investments in New York’s infrastructure.

The projects include port upgrades to transform South Brooklyn Marine Terminal into a major staging and assembly facility for the industry, as well as an operations and maintenance base for the projects. Equinor recently announced the opening of a New York project office located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, opposite the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.  The partnership will also invest in the Port of Albany, making it America’s first offshore wind tower and transition piece manufacturing facility.

  • 95. Don't Look Up; Brian and Hyundai Make Shocking Announcements

Hyundai says goodbye to the combustion engine and fuel cell vehicles! We face off on the Netflix blockbuster Don't Look Up and what it means to the phenomenon of climate denial. A popular YouTuber proves electric aviation will take off fast. Brian makes a shocking announcement!

James's Nissan Leaf in a -30s Celsius cold snap. He has to make sure he keeps using the vehicle or the battery over-charges. As an experiment he leaves the electric vehicle unplugged in his driveway for 24 hours to see how much the battery drains heating itself.

James also finds a Hyundai Ioniq 5 in his hometown and goes to have a look to see how big it really is. His conservative friend is buying a luxury EV and we take a look at the BMW i4 m50.

Big oil and big oil government get nasty with a small Canadian city who dares not worship fossil fuels. That city happens to be where your hosts live. Regina, Saskatchewan is featured in a new report that says industry groups like CAPP, businesses such as the Keystone Group of Companies and organizations like the Regina Chamber of Commerce, mobilized fossil fuel supporters with scripted emails against the motion. According to the report, several councillors who originally supported the measure were persuaded to drop their support because residents who agreed with the city's climate goals felt the motion had become too controversial.

Brian's Movie Corner features Don't Look Up from Netflix. James says it's satire is effective while Brian thinks it could have been more funny.

In this week's Mail Bag California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) plan to slash support for home solar and a local farm/climate activist gets emotional over the resistance he faces in his fight to save the planet. Plus we talk about where we get our climate news from.

A popular YouTuber demonstrates why small airlines will go electric soon. It's the money, stupid! 9-passenger short haul routes will be first.

We end on the song 'It's Time' by Library Voices from the motion picture The Sabbatical.

You can still catch The Sabbatical on Tubi for free with commercials or rent it wherever you get movies.

  • 92. Elon Musk is the Rockefeller of Clean Energy

Toyota announces 30 EVs, Tesla Semi begins limited production, Ontario picks a nuclear reactor to waste taxpayer money on. Tesla's Elon Musk is Time Magazine's Person of the Year 2021. Does he deserve it?

Brian takes a trip in a gas car and regrets everything about it. Canadian fast EV chargers aren't always in the needed places, they go where the green-washing companies want them. We leave Facebook over ethical concerns but Brian reneges on his personal account. Why is Trump building his own right wing social media platform? Isn't that what Facebook is now?

Do electric vehicles cost more to insure? No, not where we live, anyway.

Recycling batteries needed to make more batteries because there's crazy demand. But where will they come from?

EPA figures are in for the Hyundai Ioniq5 and the Kia EV6 and only the Tesla Model Y beats them for efficiency.

Ontario picks a loser, I mean winner for their new nuclear reactor. Coulda bought 6 million solar panels.

Rivian wins Motor Trend Truck of the Year to the surprise of few.

Toyota announces 30 EVs by 2030. But by 2030 it'll be all over and they'll be bankrupt.

Australia’s coal-fired power plants are likely to close 3x faster than planned, with its primary electricity grid becoming coal-free by 2043.

Tesla now has 7 electric vehicle variants approved in India, but no clear timeline for launch……could be a good sign of Tesla preparing to launch in the country, the company has been quite clear that it wants a waiver on car import duties for electric vehicles before launching in the market.

Exxon has sponsored a lot of podcasts in November when COP26 was going on. They lied in those commercials. How to determine what EV is right for you by using a trip simulation website. Honda announces they don’t want to tire themselves out making EVs. Stelantis admits they don’t know how to make money selling EVs.

Brian sees actor friend Laura Abramsen in a commercial then relates a story about meeting director Peter Jackson and we again discuss film grain, especially 16mm. Brian watches The Beatles Get Back and we get into the technical details. Brian isn't happy with the over-use of the technical cleanup of Get Back because it literally removes guitar strings.

James discusses the reaction to his presentation about Electric Cars in Winter. People don't realize how easy it is to drive an EV cross-country. We suggest playing with A Better Route Planner, a free online website or app where you can test out different scenarios with different vehicles.
