  • How to Install Your Scheme at Lower Levels w/ Cameron Palmer

Running your system at the Varsity level takes time, practice, fine tuning, and even some system changes as you go along. Running that same system at lower levels is all of those, with less time to install, less football IQ amongst players (and often coaches), and lack of experience for all parties involved. But, it’s not only doable, but something you SHOULD DO.

On this episode we're joined by Bixby High School's Freshman Offensive Coordinator, Cameron Palmer. Coach Palmer has been apart of one of the most explosive offenses in the country for several years, and has found ways to adapt the system for his Freshman team each year.

What parts of our scheme do we want to pass down to JH and Youth Coaches?

    • Blocking/Tackling/Catching
    • Terminology the SAME
    • Non negotiables - how to practice

Why is it important for them to have our scheme?

    • Makes it easier to develop
    • Easier to have coaches work with multiple groups
    • Can develop coaches quicker

How can we keep from crippling their creativeness within our system?

    • What is a must, what creativity is “allowed”
    • Give opportunity for them to “fail”

  • Athletes vs Football Players

Listen as Coach Daniel Chamberlain and Coach Kenny Simpson breakdown the differences in Athletes and Football Players, how you should be planning to use each, and how you can help either one become a more rounded football player.

What is the difference between Athletes and Football Players?

    • Athletes generally measured on things you can see - size, strength, speed
    • Football players may have a skill set that translates
    • Ability to process information - goes for any sport
    • Toughness

How do you plan to use each in your system?

    • Work to develop each - work on weakness, but coach to their strength

How do we help develop the other side?

    • Football player - work on normal offseason - especially speed

Now that most seasons have come to an end, it’s time to really dig in to how well you performed this past season. But, we’re not only worried about stats. How well did each piece of the machine do its job? It’s time you evaluate your system, your coaches, and your players.

How do you evaluate your system?

    • Games you “should win” - win/lose
      • Should win
      • Could win
      • Have to be perfect
    • Did you have one side of the ball “overachieve”
    • Did injuries derail the season
    • Did you ever find yourself without an answer

How do you evaluate your Coaches?

    • Stats matter
      • Kids improve for two reasons
    • Kids feedback - Admin feedback
    • Did coach improve

How do you evaluate your Returning Players?

    • What role did you ask them to fill?  Did they fill it?
    • Did they improve as the season went on?
    • Do they want to return?

  • Players Changing Positions Late Season

There are times throughout the season that a change in personnel just has to be made. It can be due to lack of performance, development of a player, or a matchup on game day.

On this episode Kenny and Daniel are talking all about why you might consider a change, why you may not make the change, and how to go about pulling the trigger when the time comes.

What makes a team consider a change?

    • 1 way vs 2 way players
    • Player improvement vs regression
    • Dynamic players
    • Freshmen show up after the beginning of the season

    • Routine and being comfortable
    • Senior leadership
    • Fear of failure

How do you make the change?

    • Honesty all season
    • Don’t embarrass a player - call in demotions 1-on-1
