-How does codependency contribute to burnout in therapists?
-What is ‘misattunement’ and how can we better understand it’s impact during our childhood?
-Why is community so fundamental in healing our codependency?
Welcome to Episode 118! This week, we are greeted with the presence of Monica Helvie, LMFT, to discuss burn out in therapists. Monica describes what codependency looks like in overworked and burnt out professionals: contorting, insecurity, self-doubt, and maintaining a facade of competence. We explore how our experiences in childhood and being over-attuned to others may make us more vulnerable to burnout as working adults. Monica emphasizes how having a community is fundamental in our healing and offers ways we can start to form our own. We conclude with hearing some tips from Monica on how to address burnout in our lives. It’s a must-listen!

More deets on the episode:
We begin with hearing Monica’s definition of codependency: when an individual has learned it’s safer to attune to the needs of others. Codependents often experience a lot of guilt and shame in response to their needs not being met and then internally make meaning out of it. Monica describes misattunement and how, unfortunately, codependents often develop an internal perception of what they have to do to survive where they minimize their needs.
Monica shares with us about codependency in her own life and ways she overattuned to her parents. In her effort to develop safety, awareness, and repair in her relationships, she created a template for how to interact with others and then took that to everyone in adulthood. She turned into the hero, the fixer, the competent one.
We shift to Monica’s specialty: working with burnt out therapists. Monica lists the common traits: contorting, guilt, shame, self-doubt, insecurity, isolation, and projecting resilience/independence/competence. These traist then often contribute to burnout, exhaustion, imposter syndrome, and isolation.
How does Monica help therapists combat burnout and find their inner badass again? Monica emphasizes how therapists have a deep craving for connection and creativity. In order to help them be their authentic and honest self, she empowers them to stop settling for bad work environments. She helps them cultivate radical responsibility, get in touch with their values, and ask the big question: what do I want for me? She offers a community to her clients and tells us why and how we can start to cultivate our own community.
Thanks for coming Monica! And thank you for being here dear listener!

More deets from this episode:
We begin with hearing Rachel’s definition of codependency. She describes seeing codependency more in terms of boundaries and lack of boundaries. Codependents tend to focus on others and have difficulty with vulnerability and accountability with others. Rachel highlights the similarities and differences between codependents and highly-sensitive people, a specialty from her practice.
Rachel opens up about codependency in her own life and how that has affected her relationship with her parents in the past and present.
We hear Rachel’s description and differentiation between codependents, empaths, and highly-sensitive people (what stands out to you? can you relate to the traits she describes?)
Next, we shift gears to discuss the importance of yoga therapy and other types of somatic therapies to help treat codependency. Rachel shares with us how yoga therapy helps patients develop awareness of their mind, body, and spirit through a individualized practice of yoga poses. As a consequence to practicing yoga therapy, Rachel shares how her patients are able to become aware of their discomfort and then, when helpful, are able to sit with their discomfort.
Rachel emphasizes how her approach helps her patients become aware of their need for boundaries and appropriate distance/closeness in relationships. She suggests how we can incorporate deep breathing, stretching, shaking, tapping, journaling, and other tools to cultivate self-attunement.
Thank you for coming Rachel! And thank you for being here dear listener!

-What does codependency look like when it comes to sex?
-Why do codependents ‘fake it?’ And what can they do if they want to stop?
-How can we begin to prioritize and balance our and our partners’ sexual needs?
Welcome to Episode 116! Rima Bonario is back to talk about codependents in bed! What does codependency look like when it comes to sex? Rima tells all and helps us get real about faking it. You’ll hear Rima describe how codependents often prioritize the sexual needs of their partners and the long-term consequences of such behavior. We learn how unsustainable it is to gratify, satisfy, and tend to the needs of your partner while ignoring your own. We end with tips on how to become familiar with our own sexuality and ways we can prioritize our need for sexual pleasure. It’s a must-listen!

More deets on this week’s episode:
Rima Bonario is back! Let’s talk about sex baby! We begin with hearing about Rima’s take on what codependency looks like IN THE BEDROOM! GASP!
Rima shares with us how codependents will other-reference and cater to what our partners need sexually while abandoning our own bodies. She adds how we also neglect our own bodies response.
Rima opens up about her own sexual experiences tainted by codependency. She recalls how, in the past, she was unable to differentiate her partners’ pleasure with her own. I also open up about how I often faked it with former lovers and how all that mattered was his pleasure. Can you relate?
Rima educates us on the consequences of prioritizing the sexual needs of others while ignoring our own: resentment, sadness, dissatisfaction, and fantasizing about others (which could lead to emotional or sexual infidelity). We learn how, unlike popular culture would like us to believe, the time it takes for sexual pleasure to pique for a woman is 45 minutes! Due to her own exploration, Rima was able to discover how she needed dialogue, safe physical touch (e.g., massage), and other external stimuli (like candles) to help her set the mood. How can you start to explore and do the same?
Rima suggests ways we can stop faking it and discover our sexual sovereignty. “The foremost expert on your own body is you!” She instructs us to be curious about our own body, familiarize ourself with the anatomy of a woman, read books, seek professional support, find community with other women, attend support groups as needed, and seek resources.
Thanks for coming on Dr. Rima!

More deets on the episode:
We begin with our typical two questions: how does Nicole define codependency? And a codependent experience from her own life that she can share with us?
Nicole describes codependency as giving away parts of yourself and what you know to be true for outside validation. She opens up about codependent relationships in her past, including with romantic partners, coworkers, and bosses. It all turned around when she integrated meditation, breathwork, and bodywork along with psychotherapy.
Nicole teaches us about her work as an energy coach and how we can begin to pay attention to our posture in relationships. She details how breathwork, somatic therapy, and meditation can all help those struggling with codependency since it fosters self-alignment.
But what if we struggle with meditation? Nicole gives us tips on how we can start small and develop a meditation practice over time. We learn the Breathing Box method as an example to help us focus on breathing and counting to start somewhere when it comes to meditation.
We end by hearing about Nicole’s go-to coping skills. Great ideas!

More deets from this episode:
We begin with hearing Melissa’s take on the definition of codependency: a relationship dynamic where the ‘giver’ completely sacrifices their needs for another (a ‘taker’ or a ‘receiver’). Codependency, to Melissa, is also how someone feels in a relationship where they are often anxious, insecure, questioning, and overdoing as they doubt they are enough.
Melissa revisits a codependent experience when she returned her shopping cart at ALDI. Yes, it was just a moment but there’s so much depth and meaning in the exchange, right?
Melissa then provides us with a 101 tutorial on Gestalt Therapy: who founded it, how it views human behavior, and the pillars of the therapeutic approach.
We hear about Gestalt’s emphasis on making meaning in our lives, dealing with interruptions, and the four ways we respond to others: introjection, projection, confluence, and retroflection.
We conclude with hearing how Melissa’s approach helps her clients become aware of their characterological patterns. It’s all about awareness!

More deets on the episode:
We begin with hearing Lisa’s definition of codependency: taking loyalty to a very dysfunctional level. She shares about a codependent friendship and how she and her friend got to the point where their loyalty led dysfunction which resulted in a blow out.
We then dive into Lisa’s book, From Burnout to Best Life.
From page 72: When we say yes to something, we’re saying no to something else. By always saying yes, we’re allowing others to control our lives. How does Lisa help her clients mean it when they say ‘yes’ and ‘no?’ She emphasizes how it comes down to learning how to say it. The key thing about saying what we mean is in the way in which we say it: if we say no, Lisa suggest we offer a solution.
From page 85: If boundaries are not set and balance is not maintained, it can lead to serious mental and physical health problems. What kind of problems has Lisa seen? She opens up about her own burnout and how her coaching clients often come to her with their relationships and health in disarray. In order to help them, she works at teaching them to recognize there are things they can say ‘no’ to in order to take care of themselves and their relationships.
From page 97: Set healthy boundaries. What are the common boundaries Lisa helps her clients set? Most often, she begins by helping her clients take control of their calendars. Codependents often give their time to others so she aids her clients in seeing where they can make time for themselves, their self-care, their appointments, etc. to have more balance.
From age 110: As humans, we want to be liked…When we are rejected, it’s defeating. To avoid rejection…we may suppress our true selves…become inauthentic…What are the initial steps Lisa takes to help her clients live more authentically? She guides them with getting in touch with their fears, get curious of how their fears can be a blessing or an opportunity, and then they are more empowered to live with authenticity in the world.
Thank you for coming Lisa! And thank you for being here dear listener!

-How can yoga help us confront our poor relationship patterns as a consequence of becoming more aware of our bodies?
-What about practicing yoga helps us let go of perfectionism, compare-and-despair, and self-neglect?
Welcome to Episode 112! This week, I sat down with Stephanie Flanders Martin, certified yoga instructor and owner of a virtual yoga studio. Stephanie opens up about codependency in her life and all the hard work she’s done to foster interdependence in her second marriage. We discuss the healing power of yoga for codependents on their healing journeys. Yoga in and of itself is a practice and helps us learn attunement to ourselves, awareness of our physical sensations and emotions, and commitment to practice rather than perfection. Stephanie describes the benefits of breathing, humming, and certain poses to help us get in touch with ourselves. We conclude with ways Stephanie helps her students address imbalance in their lives by focusing on balance in yoga. It’s a must-listen!

We begin with hearing Stephanie’s definition of codependency and experiences of it from her own life. She describes how codependents tend to look for approval from and have an unhealthy attachment to someone. She shares about her first marriage and ways she did what her former husband told her–even when she didn’t agree with it.
Stephanie reveals all the work she did after her divorce to avoid history repeating itself and ways she and her second husband have cultivated interdependence. They attend workshops annually, read books, and honor one another’s love language.
We shift gears to focusing on the healing power of yoga. Stephanie educates us on trauma-informed yoga and how she works with her students to offer words, cues, and gentle touch in order to create a collaborative partnership with them. In her classes and her studio, she has strived to have a space where her students can tune into themselves, open themselves up, and become more self-aware through breath/movement.
And how has Stephanie seen codependency show up in the body? We discuss how our chakras may be blocked or tight if we aren’t verbalizing our needs, catering to others, and people-pleasing. Through yoga, individuals struggling with codependency are able to build awareness and knowledge by tuning into their bodies.
Stephanie emphasizes how breathing, chanting, and humming help us get in touch with our vagus nerve, the nerve that cues our “rest and digest” parasympathetic nervous system. She makes an effort to help her students focus on these aspects of yoga in order to forget about pleasing her, comparing themselves, and getting distracted by perfectionism.
We conclude with tips on how to deepen your yoga practice: intention setting, restorative classes, and making sure your teacher resonates with you.
Thanks for coming on Stephanie! And thank you for being here dear listener!

-How come codependents find it hard–or nearly impossible–to dive deep within ourselves?
-What about codependency contributes to our inability to trust ourselves?
-What is ‘Internal Family Systems Therapy’ and how can ‘parts work’ help us develop self-trust?
Welcome to Episode 110! In this week’s episode, I sat down with the lovely Megan Carney, PhD, to talk about how we can learn to trust ourselves. Self-trust is often a foreign concept for codependents, right? Megan shares with us about why it’s hard for us to “dive deep” within ourselves and get to know our thoughts, feelings, wants, needs, and desires. As a consequence, we lack confidence and trust within ourselves. Megan spells out ways we can start to develop self-trust: attending therapy, journaling, meditation, movement, and parts work. Parts work? Yes, parts work through Internal Family Systems Therapy, a therapy modality that Megan integrates in her work with patients. We conclude with other takeaways to develop self-trust. It’s a must-listen!
More on this episode’s guest:
Megan Carney is a psychologist who navigates deep feelings and beliefs with persistent, kind, smart, caring people who need support offering that kindness to themselves. She nudges them to dive deep without pushing them off the cliff so they can cultivate better relationships, stop pushing aside their own needs, and enjoy life.

More deets on the episode:
We begin with our “typical two” and hear Megan’s definition of codependency: giving so much of ourselves that it harms us. She shares about codependency in her life, including with her child, husband, business, and clients.
We then hear about the work Megan does to “dive deep” within themselves. Why is it so hard for codependents to dive deep within themselves?
Megan emphasizes how we unknowingly avoid our feelings for good reason: we want to avoid rejection, abandonment, and overwhelm. She encourages we use apps like Shine to get in touch with our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations.
We then discuss why self-trust is hard for codependents. Megan describes how we lack confidence, ignore ourselves, focus on others, seek approval, and often wear a mask.
And how can we start to develop self-trust? Megan shares how we can mediate, incorporate movement (like yoga), journal, write poetry, and do parts work. She provides an overview of IFS, Internal Family Systems therapy, a modality where clients are able to get in touch with different parts of themselves: their codependent part, adult part, scared part, hurt part, and so on.
Megan concludes with ways we also struggle with feeling good about ourselves. She reminds us to work on listening to ourselves, making space for our feelings, and creating choices.
Thanks for coming on Megan!

We begin with a check-in from me. Then check-in on you.
Next, we dive in with a discussion on how we codependummies tend to respond when life gets busy AF. We tend to:
There are major consequences to responding to a busy season like we have!
I propose that a codependummy, or a codependiamond, ought to try the following when life gets busy AF to slow the F down :
I then unpack three of these: 1) how to create a before, during, and after care plan; 2) how to differentiate between groups/individuals and others’ needs/our needs; and 3) how to get help (namely from medical professionals.
We conclude with how this approach has helped me slow down. We end with questions for you: How do you relate? What do you do to slow the F down when life gets busy AF? What wisdom have you gleaned from a recent busy season? Let me know!
