    Context Is Important

Howard reviews every application holistically, considering the rigor of a student's coursework, academic trajectory, and any circumstances that may have influenced their performance.

    Impact Over Activity Lists

Meaningful involvement, sustained commitment, employment, family responsibilities, and community engagement often carry more weight than accumulating numerous leadership titles.

    Scholarships Require Initiative

Students should begin searching for external scholarships early and apply broadly. Persistence and consistency can significantly reduce the cost of college.

    Memorable Quotes

"Howard students are mission-driven, community-minded, and excited to be in an environment where excellence and Black identity reinforce one another." — Brie Mercedes

Whether you're building your college list or making your final college decision, this conversation will help you better understand what truly contributes to student success.

    In This Episode, You'll Learn
    • What distinguishes Long Island University from other colleges and universities.

    • How LIU helps make college more affordable through merit scholarships and tuition stability.
    • Practical advice for students and families navigating the college admissions process.

Key TakeawaysCollege Is More Than an Acceptance Letter

Selecting a college is about finding an environment where students will be challenged academically, supported personally, and prepared professionally. The right college is one where students can see themselves growing, contributing, and belonging.

Admissions Is About the Whole Student

While academic performance is important, LIU also values applicants who demonstrate leadership, resilience, intellectual curiosity, compassion, and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.

Student Success Begins with Personalized Support

LIU's Success Coach model provides every student with a dedicated professional who serves as a consistent resource for academic advising, financial aid, career planning, and personal development throughout the college journey.

    Real-World Learning Matters

LIU emphasizes experiential learning through internships, undergraduate research, business consulting projects, investment management opportunities, and other hands-on experiences that prepare students for successful careers.

Finding the Right Fit Should Be the Goal

Rather than focusing solely on rankings or comparing themselves to peers, students should choose a college where they feel supported, connected, and excited to spend the next four years.

    Michael Berthel's Advice for Families
    • Prioritize finding the college that best matches your goals, interests, and values—not simply the most recognizable name.

  • 382. Inside Ithaca College Admissions: What Really Matters (GPA, Test-Optional & Scholarships)

In this episode I am happy to welcome back Jessica Dietrich, Senior Associate Director for Recruitment Strategy, to explore what’s happening right now in admissions at Ithaca College—and what families need to know.

Jessica explains Ithaca’s commitment to “theory, practice, and performance,” blending a strong liberal arts foundation with hands-on learning. While transcripts remain the strongest predictor of success, Ithaca reviews applications holistically and contextually—asking not just what a student achieved, but how they challenged themselves within their environment.

Though founded as a music conservatory, Ithaca is far more than the arts. With 200+ lab spaces and robust undergraduate research in STEM, many students are surprised by the breadth of opportunity. A test-optional pioneer since 2012, standardized scores carry little weight in admission or merit decisions. Academic rigor is evaluated in context, and GPAs may be recalculated to ensure fairness across schools.

Application advice? Show growth and leadership in your activities. Let your authentic voice come through in your essay—AI-generated responses can raise integrity concerns. Audition-based programs add another layer to review, and students with IEPs or 504 plans are encouraged to connect early with Accessibility Services.

What’s new: a full-tuition Presidential Scholarship (Nov. 1 deadline), a four-year financial forecast with capped tuition increases, and new programs in Strategic Leadership, Business Analytics, and Dance/Choreography.

Jessica’s closing advice: tune out the noise, ask for help, and embrace the growth that comes with the college search.

In this episode of The College Admissions Process Podcast, Dr. John Durante welcomes back Rick Barth, Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Clemson University, for an in-depth conversation about Clemson’s increasingly competitive admissions landscape.

With more than 65,000 applications submitted this past cycle, Clemson continues to experience record growth while carefully managing enrollment to maintain quality and student experience. Rick shares how the admissions team evaluates applications in a highly selective environment, including transcript review, academic rigor, and the role of institutional priorities such as in-state enrollment and high-demand majors.

Listeners will gain insight into Clemson’s use of the STARS self-reported academic system, how the university evaluates students within the context of their high school (including an internal ranking system when schools do not provide class rank), and what academic benchmarks signal readiness—particularly for STEM and engineering applicants. Rick also discusses the realities of test-optional admissions, noting that approximately 40% of admitted students apply without scores, while providing context around Clemson’s middle 50% ranges.

Beyond academics, the conversation explores what makes an application stand out. Rick emphasizes authenticity in essays, meaningful engagement in activities, and the value of initiative—whether through part-time work, leadership, or service.
