The Cross-Check NHL Show

On today's episode of the Cross-Check NHL Show, Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire take a look at a handful of trades that have gone down over the last few days, including the Colorado Avalanche trading for Josh Manson from the Anaheim Ducks, then trading away Tyson Jost to the Minnesota Wild to clear cap space for another move, the Calgary Flames trading for Calle Jarnkrok from the Seattle Kraken, the Florida Panthers trading Frank Vatrano to the New York Rangers to clear cap space, then trading for Ben Chiarot from the Montreal Canadiens, and more.

Also on the show, the hosts ask what on earth the San Jose Sharks are doing. After signing Tomas Hertl, the Sharks have over half of next seasons' salary cap alotted to five players, and four of the five are already over 30. Since when is that how you build a contender?

Finally, how about some Trade Deadline predictions? Will the Leafs get a goalie? Will they get Mark Giordano instead? Are the Panthers done? Are the Lightning going to load up again? You'll have to listen to find out what we think.

The growing frustration in Toronto is finally getting to Auston Matthews, as the Hart Trophy contender lost his cool in the Heritage Classic and earned himself a 2 game suspension for a cross-check at the worst possible time. How vulnerable are the Leafs right now?

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, P.K. Subban’s name has come up in trade deadline rumors with an interesting twist. If they wanted, the New Jersey Devils could buy Subban out, making him a free agent at the deadline, but will they? And what does Subban bring to a team as he continues to be hit hard by the aging curve?

Next, Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke discuss Alex Ovechkin hearing the boos from Alberta on the Washington Capitals recent road trip. While Ovechkin is fair game for his support of Putin in the past, many Russians have decried the recent actions against Ukraine and don’t deserve your ire.

Phil Kessel also extended his Iron Man streak in an unconventional way by playing one shift for the Arizona Coyotes then leaving to witness the birth of his child. Given the hardships the Coyotes — and Kessel — have faced, this is a sweet thing to do, even if it’s a bit cheesy.

Finally, Andrew and Mary end the show talking about the newest teaser for Obi-Wan Kenobi and their expectations for this newest Star Wars show.

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has cast a pall over the world at large, with the hockey world also being impacted quite strongly. With Andrew Berkshire unavailable, Sarah Avampato of Locked On Kings joins Mary Clarke for today’s show.

First, the Los Angeles Kings have put themselves in an advantageous position in the Pacific Division to make some noise in the playoffs. Sarah breaks down just why the Kings have been so good this year, from Jonathan Quick in net to new fan-favorite Phillip Danault, and discusses how far Los Angeles can go.

Next, Alex Ovechkin spoke to the media about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Though it was not the answer many were hoping for, hockey journalists were in the right to ask Ovechkin, given his relationship to Vladimir Putin. Not only that, the International Ice Hockey Federation has banned Russia and Belarus from events and has stripped the 2023 World Juniors from the country as well.

Mary and Sarah wrap up the hockey talk with a plea for the Toronto Maple Leafs to get Jack Campbell help in net before transitioning to the pop culture roulette, where Sarah discusses her new-found love for Critical Role.

Despite a fantastic season overall, the Toronto Maple Leafs have finally done what they always do, which is completely shatter the confidence of their fanbase in one fell swoop. Over the course of two days, the Leafs lost games to the last two teams to eliminate them in the playoffs in the Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets, the second of which happened on the second anniversary of the David Ayers game. Could you script it better? The Leafs are always the main character.

Andrew and Mary then practice some therapy over the impending trade of Claude Giroux, who has been everything to the Philadelphia Flyers and more. What will be his legacy? Andrew suggests it will be similar to that of Saku Koivu.

Finally, the hosts take a look at the upcoming outdoor game in Nashville between the Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning. Are outdoor games still cool? Should the NHL keep doing them?

On today's episode of the Cross-Check NHL Show, the hosts are breaking down the biggest event of the Olympics so far in the women's hockey gold medal game. Canada proved victorious for the fifth time in six Olympics, but how much of that is due to glaring issues from the American coaching staff?

Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire talk about the enduring positive stories that will come from the tournament, including Sarah Nurse's Olympic record scoring title, and Abby Roque breaking new ground for Indigenous hockey players.

The men's hockey tournament didn't have the highlights for North America that the women's did, with both the USA and Canada bowing out in the quarterfinal in disappointing fashion.

Back in the NHL, as we assume our regularly scheduled programming, Sidney Crosby scored his 500th career regular season goal against the Philadelphia Flyers, which also happened to be his 50th career goal against the Flyers, and it happened on Penguins legend Jaromir Jagr's 50th birthday. What a time to be alive, especially for Team USA and Flyers fan Mary Clarke.

The hosts round out the episode with their pop culture segment; talking about Horizon: Forbidden West, Peacemaker, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, and then wax poetic about the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire break down the Calgary Flames’ trade for Tyler Toffoli. The Montreal Canadiens have seemingly committed to a full rebuild with the Toffoli trade, while the Flames are stocking up for a run at the Pacific crown.

Speaking of the Pacific, Jack Eichel is set to make his Vegas Golden Knights debut this week. After everything Eichel has gone through, it’s great to see him complete his return after his fallout with the Buffalo Sabres. With Mark Stone on LTIR, however, will Eichel’s return be remembered as the next Nikita Kucherov incident?

Plus, Mary and Andrew predict the winner of the Beijing Olympics women’s gold medal game with the United States and Canada once again set to clash. Over in the men’s tournament, how are Team USA and Canada fairing as the playoff rounds begin?
