The Cross-Check NHL Show

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, the NHL has officially withdrawn from the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing as COVID-19 has disrupted too much of the league’s season. Though no surprise to anyone, hosts Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire say their final goodbyes to NHLers at the Olympics and look ahead to the women’s tournament.

Next, the Calgary Flames are embroiled in a bit of arena drama as the city of Calgary and the team ownership are at a standstill on the new arena’s cost. Though not as dire as the Arizona Coyotes situation, another arena problem doesn’t look good for the NHL overall.

And finally, Mary and Andrew create the definitive ranking of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to close out the show before the holiday.

With the Calgary Flames now entering the fray of having games delayed, that combined with the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 is beginning to put pressure on the NHL about the Olympics in China. On top of that, China's draconian quarantine policies pose an even greater risk to NHLers than previously believed. Are the Olympics truly in jeopardy?

John Tortorella hates fun, he hates Trevor Zegras' amazing flip pass to Sonny Milano, and he loves hard hockey, which apparently means concussing players who try fancy things. As a former NHL coach less than one year removed from his latest job, Tortorella's commentary carries weight for all the wrong reasons.

Finally, when are NHLers going to learn to ignore Brendan Lemieux? And we bid a fond farewell to Ben Bishop, who was forced into retirement after trying to return from a persistent knee injury.

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, the Arizona Coyotes are in arena trouble again as the team has accumulated unpaid arena charges and delinquent tax bills. The Coyotes must pay before end of the day on December 20 or be locked out of Gila River Arena.

With this latest news, how much longer will the NHL continue to allow the Coyotes to get away with mismanagement before the league pulls the plug on relocation? The Coyotes fans may not deserve this fate, but the team continues to hemorrhage money for the league.

Plus, Rachel Donner of Locked on Flyers joins the show to discuss the state of the team after firing Alain Vigneault. Expectations were higher on this Flyers team after shuffling the mix of players on their roster in the offseason, but even that hasn’t been able to jumpstart them. Are Ron Hextall’s rebuilding years not nearly as lucrative as we once thought?

Not only that, Claude Giroux’s free agent status looms over this team heading into the offseason, as the long-time Flyer may very well decide to leave if things do not turn around this season.

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire break down the plethora of coaching and management news across the league.

The Vancouver Canucks finally made changes in firing Jim Benning and Travis Green, while bringing in Bruce Boudreau. Though these moves may be a little too late to save the Canucks' season as it stands now, a lot rides on the team's upcoming choice of general manager.

Mere hours after the Canucks management news, the Philadelphia Flyers fired Alain Vigneault and Michel Therrien in the midst of a nine-game losing streak. As the Flyers attempt to get back on track to have a successful season, what should they do at the head coaching position with names such as Rick Tocchet and John Tortorella hanging around.

Plus, Neal Pionk and Jason Spezza engaged in some dangerous tomfoolery in a recent game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets. With Pionk already serving a two-game suspension for kneeing Rasmus Sandin, will Spezza also sit for his retaliation run on the Jets' defenseman?

Surprise, surprise, the NHL's only officially unvaccinated player is on the COVID protocol list; Tyler Bertuzzi put himself and his teammates in the bad situation everyone knew would happen.

The Evander Kane situation is never ending, with more drama coming out about his wife getting an abortion and Kane getting temporary custody of their kids. It's a gross situation.

Alex Ovechkin is in the midst of the best start of his career, can he keep it up? Where would Ovechkin be today if not for lockouts and COVID stealing games from him?

Finally, the show welcomes Montreal Canadiens insider Eric Engels back, as he breaks down the reasoning behind the Habs firing Marc Bergevin, Paul Wilson, and Trevor Timmins, while letting Scott Mellanby walk. Despite what Geoff Molson says, the Logan Mailloux situation was a factor.

Then, Eric breaks down the big name candidates to join VP of hockey operations Jeff Gorton as the Canadiens' next GM. Will it be Patrick Roy? Daniel Briere? Martin Madden Jr? Mathieu Darche?

The Montreal Canadiens finally made a change, letting go of general manager Marc Bergevin, long time prospect guru Trevor Timmins, assistant GM Scott Mellanby, and PR director Paul Wilson. Jeff Gorton is coming in to be the Canadiens' vice president of hockey operations, but how progressive are these changes?

Brendan Lemieux tried to eat Brady Tkachuk, and the uproar around it is hilarious and well deserved. On top of Bite Gate, Artemi Panarin threw his glove at Brad Marchand for some offside comments. Are we down with the drama? Of course!

Finally, the Ottawa Senators put Matt Murray through waivers, and the San Jose Sharks did the same with Evander Kane. Will either player recover their careers? Who first?

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire tear into Team Canada and Team USA’s mixed bag Olympic jerseys for 2022. Instead of innovating on what made their past sweaters so iconic, both Canada and the United States heavily misunderstood the assignment.

Plus, Chris Peters of Daily Faceoff joins the show to discuss the Omaha Lancers situation in the USHL and where things stand after its players boycotted the team’s budget cuts. Chris also helps Mary and Andrew preview the upcoming World Juniors next month where Team USA looks for back-to-back championships.

Finally, Andrew has watched Dune and has some opinions he needs to share.

Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire take a look at the teams outside and looking in at the NHL's American Thanksgiving milestone, the time in the season where it becomes clear who has some serious work to do to make the playoffs.

The New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Dallas Stars highlight the discussion as teams that should be better than they've been.

With Brayden Point now out indefinitely, is the combination of losing a whole line in the offseason, Point now, and Nikita Kucherov last month too much for the Lightning to weather? This season looks like a steeper uphill climb than any other they've faced.

Finally, the New Jersey Devils' new third jersey has leaked, and it's incredibly boring. What other teams have missed the mark in recent years?
