The Cross-Check NHL Show

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke dig into the Vancouver Canucks struggles this season. The Canucks will only be able to move forward once Jim Benning is no longer with the organization, but Vancouver seems reluctant to let him go.

Next, the Colorado Avalanche are on an upswing, but young star Bowen Byram has suffered yet another concussion. In a must-read piece from The Athletic, Byram detailed his heartbreaking injury history in his attempts to break through to the NHL level.

Plus, the NHL’s reluctance to call penalties is hurting the sport as the decline of power plays has frustrated fans and players alike. Though star players like Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid are the most impacted, this decision from the NHL’s higher ups has made a mockery of the sport.

And finally, Andrew and Mary cap off the episode with a discussion of the latest Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer and what it means for the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

How bad is the situation with the Ottawa Senators? Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke debate whether the NHL should have postponed games earlier for a team with 10 people in the COVID protocol, and whether this outbreak endangers the Olympics.

John Tortorella tells Connor McDavid to shut up, and focus on changing his game for the playoffs. While it makes for a great segment starting point, how do the hosts feel about Tortorella implicitly saying the best player in the world is the problem?

Finally, the Maple Leafs are hitting their stride as a team to watch going forward after an awful start to the year. Can they find the success that's eluded them for years after dealing with adversity in the regular season for once?

On this episode of The Cross-Check NHL Show, Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire do without a guest as a whole bunch of news across the league broke. First, the Anaheim Ducks placed general manager Bob Murray on leave due to an ongoing investigation into his professional conduct. Though the Ducks did the right thing, it is hard to praise them given how hypocritical the NHL has been with other important cases.

Next, the mother of John Doe 2 in the Chicago Blackhawks sexual assault case stepped forward to speak about her son and call out Gary Bettman in a heartbreaking interview. It is past time that Bettman steps down from the NHL, but those set to replace him would only continue to perpetuate hockey culture as we know it.

And finally, Carey Price revealed that substance use was the reason behind him checking into the NHL’s player assistance program only one month ago after posting a courageous message on social media.

Will Tyler Bertuzzi's selfishness cost the Detroit Red Wings a playoff spot this year? Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire have been surprised by how well the Red Wings have been playing this year, but without Bertuzzi's hot hand they've been winless, and the forward's refusal to get vaccinated is keeping him from partaking in games in Canada. In a team-first sport like hockey, how is that playing in the room?

The Philadelphia Flyers are getting great goaltending from both Martin Jones and Carter Hart, no seriously! Martin Jones! Is that shining oasis in the middle of a desert of Flyers goaltending history, bound to disappear as the playoffs look within reach? Or is this the real thing?

Carey Price returns from the player assistance program for the Montreal Canadiens, but how long until he can make an impact?

Finally, Andrew reviews Eternals!

Surprise! Jack Eichel was finally traded early Thursday morning, but not to the team he was so heavily rumored to leading up to the deal. Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke break down the Eichel trade and what it means for both the Buffalo Sabres and Vegas Golden Knights. Plus, was the rumored Calgary Flames deal just a smokescreen all along?

Also, Mike Pfeil of The ScorchStack joins the show to discuss the Eichel deal with the Flames that never was. What does Calgary do with Matthew Tkachuk now? What moves can this team make to continue to stay competitive in a wacky Pacific Division? Also, rest in peace Scorch, the best hockey mascot there ever was.

With the fallout of the Brad Aldrich abuse scandal that the Chicago Blackhawks covered up and allowed to continue still developing, Gary Bettman held a press conference and promptly stuck his foot in his mouth multiple times. Andrew Berkshire and Mary Clarke attempt to go through the transcript as it's unfolding and react to the league's callousness.

Onto more fun stuff, the hosts rave about the hot starts from superstars like Connor McDavid and Alex Ovechkin, and lament the awful situation the Blackhawks have put Marc-Andre Fleury in.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have extended Morgan Rielly to a giant contract spanning 8 years, until he's 35-years-old. Is it a good idea? Can they survive as a team with five players taking up 59% of their cap space?

It's a heavy episode, after two days filled with revelations from the Jenner & Block investigation into the Chicago Blackhawks' mishandling of the sexual assault committed by then-video coach Brad Aldrich against Kyle Beach.

Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire take you through the two days worth of news, and grapple with the failures in the sport, the lacklustre response to those failures, and where we should go from here.

To lighten the mood a little, Steve Dangle drops by to talk about the stresses of being a Leafs fan, where he expects the team to be by the end of the playoffs, how he's feeling about Mitch Marner these days, and more.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, and Chicago Blackhawks are already in deep trouble barely two weeks into the season, so Mary Clarke and Andrew Berkshire debate which of those teams can possibly climb out of the gutter.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Carolina Hurricanes, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, and St. Louis Blues are undefeated, but how many of those teams are for real?

The Seattle Kraken finally played their first home game, and despite a great crowd, it ended up in disappointment. Is that a harbinger for the rest of their season, or are they bound to get better?

Evander Kane is once again the main character, and always it's not for a good reason. Andrew Berkshire and Laura Saba, who is filling in for Mary Clarke again from Locked on Canadiens, break down the incredibly complicated Evander Kane situation after being caught falsifying his vaccine card, from the NHL side of it, to what the San Jose Sharks can do to limit the distraction and unrest Kane brings in his wake.

Following talk about Kane, Adam Gretz joins the show to take us on a walk through the chaotic forest of the first 10 days of the 2021-22 NHL season, from the Pittsburgh Penguins dominating without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, to Carter Hart leading the way for a bounce-back season from the Philadelphia Flyers, to the awful starts of the Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders.

Mary Clarke is on vacation, enjoying the Disney experience that this show fully endorses! So that means Andrew Berkshire reached out to one of his favourite people in the whole world; Locked on Canadiens cohost Laura Saba. Laura joins this week's Cross-Check NHL Show on Tuesday and Thursday to break down the biggest stories in the NHL.

To start things off, the hosts look at the chaos the beginning of the season brings to the table, from the struggling Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders, to the surging Buffalo Sabres and Columbus Blue Jackets.

In the weekly Cross-Check segment, Andrew and Laura break down if the Blackhawks' rebuild on the fly was all for naught, and whether or not the Lightning might be in a little short term trouble.
